Doreen, Julian, Megan and Nico arrive at her grandfather's farm in California for New Years.

BACKDATED to December 30th due to travel restrictions

Doreen loved the smell of the air this far north of the city. Pulling into the farm had her tail twitching with excitement. It may have been the dead of winter, but California was sunny and warm. And outside of L.A. it was the best place on earth, as far as Doreen was concerned. “We’re almost there! Mom’s working, but Grandpa’s there and he’s the coolest. So don’t worry Megan, you’ll like him and he’ll like you and he’s a mutant too, isn’t t hat cool?”

Megan looked at Dori and smiled. "Your Grandpa is a mutant too? Brilliant!"

It didn't seem like there should be farmland and clear air this close to Los Angeles and Hollywood, but here they were standing on farmland in 18 degree Celsius weather. Or maybe they were a lot further from LA than Megan thought--it was hard to compare distances here after growing up on an island nation.

Megan had taken her hoodie off in the car, and now her wings shone with prismatic colors in the sun. For one shiny moment, everything seemed 100% perfect.
"I didn't know that either," commented Nico as she followed the squirrel girl. It wasn't to weird though, since mutants tended to pass the gene to their descendants. "Is he...like you? I truly don't remember ever seeing him. Oh wait, he was at the mansion right?" But the man he had seen didn't look like a mutant at all. Maybe he wasn't a feral after all.

“He had a tail but it was cut off by his dad when he was little,” Doreen said, “But Grandpa’s really nice and didn’t really deserve anything like that at all, you know?”

Julian blinked, "Wait...who would deserve that?"

“No one. But don’t let on you know, I’m really not supposed to tell anyone. But he did have a tail,” Doreen said, “And this was like, back around the 50s. It’s not like my great-grandparents knew about mutants or anything.”

"Can he talk to squirrels like you can?" Megan asked, slowly coming back from her reverie.

“No. He’s like a rabbit,” Doreen said simply.

"Bunny!" Megan accidentally squeaked.

Nico was speechless for a couple of seconds, unable to process Dori's words right away. Megan's squeak managed to snap her out of it though. "Yeah, bunny, but I don't think he would like to be called that, I guess?" It was still shocking, to know there was such an old mutant -she totally forgot about Logan and the Professor for a second-, and the pain he had gone through. How was she supposed to look at him without showing utter surprise? She was totally failing at pretending not knowing a thing.

Sean stepped out of the front door with quick bounce in his step. It had been over a month since he'd seen his granddaughter, and he was very pleased with the change in her mood. "Welcome, little one, I see you've brought a few friends with you." He paused as he held the door open for the children. "Don't be shy, I'm not going to eat you," he continued with a smile. His doors were always open to mutants, especially the young and needy.
