Before Christmas, Megan brings gifts of the delicious variety to Catseye, who is moping over her encounter with her father. Megan offers advice, comfort, and distraction.

Megan approached Catseye's room, a crinkly bag still warm from Long John Silver's clutched in each hand.

"Catseye? Are you home?" She called. She didn't really want to set the food down in the hallway to knock.
"Megan?" the catgirl inquired from the other side of the door after shifting into girlform. She'd been lying on her bed in catform, trying not to mope, but her new friend's voice had perked her up immediately, as had the smell of the seafood. "Hi Megan," she said with a forced smile when she opened the door. "Your fish smell yummy."

"I got fish 'n chips and shrimp 'n chips. Which do you want? Oh, and they both have hush puppies," Megan said cheerfully.

"I can have one?" Catseye asked, confused. "You brought me food for a present? What is a hush puppy Megan? It does not look like you can fit a puppy in there and I do not think people would like it if I ate a puppy even if I was BigCat and I said BigCat did not know it was a puppy."

"Yep, food present! And I'm not really sure what hush puppies are. They look like donut holes maybe made out of a different kind of dough. I don't think there's meat in them. Should we dissect one for research purposes?"

This elicited a giggle from Catseye and she nodded enthusiastically. "Come in come in Megan. Can I have the shrimps?"

Megan stepped inside and handed Cats the bag containing shimp, french fries (as they were called in America) and hush puppies.

"How have you been?" Megan asked, opening her bag and pulling out the packets of malt vinegar and other condiments.

"Sad," Catseye answered without preamble. "How have you been Megan?"

"Yeah," Megan empathized. She wasn't really good with words of condolence, but she had witnessed Catseye's encounter with her father and it was enough to make anyone cry. "I've been pretty good, ready for the holiday though. Nervous about my training with Laurie that is going to begin soon," she said, popping a single french fry into her mouth.

"Catseye likes the holiday," she replied with a nod, though most of her enthusiasm was gone now that Megan's question had reminded her that she was sad. "Catseye likes the shiny decorations and garland and tinsel and shiny balls and pretty lights. Laurie is training Megan in what?" she asked, hoping a change in topic would help perk her up.

"I'm getting tutored in controlling my powers, since I didn't start until the middle of the semester and the teacher wants me to catch up before next semester," Megan explained. She opened her box of fried fish and sprinkled malt vinegar all over it. "But Christmas should be fun. Dori invited Nico and me to go to her family's farm, but I don't know what day that is yet. And also I want to meet your brother! Nico is going to use her powers to transport Dori and me, so I hope I can do both. We used to do big Christmases at my house... I can't wait to be surrounded by food and Christmas decorations and family again." She smiled, suddenly feeling a little warm and fuzzy inside.

Catseye's face darkened as she chomped on a shrimp. "I do not think I am going to see my brother so I do not think you can meet him," she told Megan, resisting the urge to sigh by stuffing more food in her mouth. "I have to talk to my brother about my fatherperson but I do not want to talk to him because I do not know how to say what I have to say so I am going to hide from him until I know what to say."

"Oh," said Megan, surprised. She hadn't known Catseye that long yet, but the catgirl didn't seem like someone who ran away from issues.

"Sometimes it's best to wait and come up with the exact right thing to say," Megan agreed after a moment. She herself tended to say whatever she thought without much forethought, which had also led to her putting her foot in her mouth more than once. "You'll find the right words," she said encouragingly.

"Yes I think I will," Catseye agreed with a grin. "I will wait until after Christmas because for Christmas instead of going to see my brother I am going to go to Puerto Rico where it is warm and there is sun and I can go snorkeling! Do you like snorkeling?" she asked Megan curiously, biting into another shrimp.

"Snorkeling? That's brilliant! I've never tried it. In fact, I haven't been swimming since I was a wee one. I don't know if I even own any bathers anymore!" Megan grinned, imagining trying to snorkel at any of the beaches back home.

"What is a bather?" Catseye inquired, tilting her head curiously, unfamiliar with the term. "Is it something to help you swim? Like those bubbly arm things, or the ones that children wear around their middles?"

"Ah, it's what you wear when you go swimming. Swimming outfit?"

"Oh! Like one of these?" Catseye bounded over to her dresser and pulled out the top half of a string bikini. "With strings! Lovely lovely strings!"

"Yes! One of those." She looked at the skimpy thing for a moment. "Wow, that is so lush! I mean, sexy. That's cool that you have so much confidence. There's no way I could hide my wings wearing just a bikini, but... I would like to get one eventually."

"It is not confidence that makes me like bikinis," the purple-haired girl answered, "it is the fact that I do not like clothes so wearing less clothes is better. Why would you want to hide your wings?" she inquired, eyes widening. "Your wings are lovely! Sometimes I want pretty wings like yours. Can your wings fly?"

"Thank you! I can fly, although I don't want non-mutants to see me flying or see my wings yet. I want to be good at my abilities like you and Julian before people know I'm a mutant, I guess. I want people to think, 'Oh, she's a mutant, isn't she cool?'" She thought for a minute. "I do not like wearing clothes over my wings. I need to get some halter tops or something. And maybe some thick arm-warmers."

"Maybe Nico or Clarice can make you some special clothes?" Catseye suggested. "Do you want to play Chase in the woods?" She had finished her food and the prospect of playing Chase with someone who could fly always improved her mood.

"What's Chase? Is that like tag? I can't say I've been introduced to it yet, but I would love an excuse to run around outside. Or maybe fly."

"Chase is like tag yesyesyes," the catgirl answered enthusiastically, dark mood all but forgotten, "and it is muchmuch better with flying!"

"Brilliant idea." Megan wasn't comfortable flying very high yet, but she was very familiar with the woods on campus. She forked her last four french fries and bit of fish into her cup of cocktail sauce and crammed them into her mouth.

"Let's go," she said, smiling, wiping her greasy hands off on a paper napkin and stuffing the empty cartons and trash into the bag.

Catseye tossed her empty package into the trash as well and shot off into the hallway, turning back to Megan and giggling. "You can be It Megan and I will Chase you! But you are not allowed to fly overtop of the trees where I cannot climb to okay? That is the rule of Chase and so is the rule that there is no biting allowed and no claws allowed."

"No biting and no flying over trees. Got it!" Megan shouted after Catseye. She gave the catgirl about a 15-second lead before tearing down the hallway after her, toward the woods.
