Call of the Wild: Trying to Make Amends
Feb. 11th, 2010 08:58 amAfter waking up in the Med Lab, Nick finds that he has a very unexpected temporary roommate.
Nicholas Gleason had only opened his eyes for a few moments after being transported back to the medical bay a few hours ago. It had been the craziest week of his life, but it seemed like it was these times that the world decided to give you another shot in the ribs. The boy turned his bruised face towards the person laying face up on the bed next to his, quite possibly the biggest piece of irony since the whole situation began. "Bet you were thrilled to see me get wheeled in, huh Keller?"
Julian opened his eyes and scoffed before laughing lightly. "You're an ass, Gleason," he laughed more heartily, "get it?" It was possible the pain killers were getting to him.
Nick tried to force himself to smile, but there were too many emotions flowing through him to get any more than half a smirk. "How are you feeling?" Guilt had washed into his voice even more than earlier.
"Like a mutant wolf took a chunk out of my butt," he slurred, glaring a little as he shifted into a more comfortable position. "Seriously, your aim is better than mine, ya egghead." The painkillers were definitely having an effect on him.
"I'm really sorry about that." The boy's eyes drifted to the edge of the bed as he tried to find the right words to come to him. "I know it won't make you feel any better, but I have no idea what came over me. It was like I didn't have any control over what I was doing, or even thinking."
"You're right, it doesn't make me feel any better. You're dangerous, Wolfcub," Keller said plainly. "Eh, I shoulda been quicker with my shields anyway."
Gleason let his head push back further into his own pillow. But he felt horrible about what happened with Julian, and the boy knew that if he didn't try to get to the bottom of it, he wouldn't be able to even begin to sort through the tangled knot of feelings that related to his sister. Closing his eyes at the thought, he decided to try again. "I can't take it back Julian, but I promise you that something happened. Something that'll let me keep a much better hold over my powers."
"Glad the huge wound I've sustained is going to help you, Gleason," Julian said while rolling over and opening one of the books Dori had left him.
"Keller I'm trying to apologize here!" The boy slammed his fist down on the bed and felt his whole body begin to shake. He was quick to calm down, but quickly realized that maybe his control still wasn't exactly where it needed to be.
"Save it," Julian said, turning a page. "You may have everyone else fooled, Nick. But we both know that deep down you're just an animal." Keller turned over again, "I've got my eyes on you." With a flick of his fingers the curtain that divided the two beds was drawn by a dim green glow.
A soft sigh was all that Nick could get out as he slammed his head back down on his pillow once again.
