GBOW: Here Come The Drums
Apr. 24th, 2010 03:52 pmLorna, Amara, and Tabitha take on a command helicopter monitoring the field of battle.
The decision to split up hadn't been taken lightly, but there was just too much ground to cover as a single unit, and Nightcrawler had tasked Polaris with the other two, in order to move around the immediate front, and see if they were looking at opening up a second attack on the flank. The area was mostly clear of tanks, but a muffled warning had them all take cover as three helicopters went overhead. Two of them were fast attack helicopters of the tank buster variety. The third was bigger; a converted troop transport that was now studded with antenna points. The pseudo-PavLow had been described in the military briefing as a command vehicle, and obviously the command of the armor assault had decided to see with his own eyes what was happening to his plans.
A damaged battle tank nearby had managed to give them the cover they needed. Lorna was already working on releasing the gun from the turret. "I'm going for the attack choppers first. That will give you a chance to attack the CV."
The armored vehicle provided a means of receiving and sending out of information and if they could take it out, they would have a chance at crippling the combat mission. The loud grind of metal against metal signaled the release of the gun and Lorna steeled herself as she lifted the metal piece upward and flew to the sky, heading in the direction of the first attack helicopter.
Once close enough, Lorna swung the gun forward and aimed for the destruction of the chopper's rotor head.
Tabitha really needed to work on her pitch. She hadn't hit the damned thinky-chopper yet, though she did have it weaving drunkenly through the sky. She growled as she tossed another bomb that missed. "Amara, can you help me with this stupid beast?"
"Not a problem." Amara was already tired, but what did that matter right now? She ducked out of the shelter of the damaged tank, surveying the terrain around them before making her decision. A cluster of rocks was her target, and she hit them with a hot blast of fire before hurling the molten rock skywise. Metal and glass smoked and melted as they were splattered with magma, and the transport soon started to lose altitude as the pilot panicked.
About a hundred meters away, the first attack chopper fired its guns as it swung in circles but Lorna managed to send the bullets off in another direction before watching in complete horror as the rotorcraft exploded on impact as it hit the ground. By this time, the second attack chopper's single-barrel automatic cannon had begun firing rounds of 30mm ammunition at them as it moved in to provide cover for the command vehicle.
Fear pounded through Tabs' veins as she crouched behind and overturned tank. There wasn't a second of respite to attempt to return fire. The metal grew heated against her back as the barrage of fire made the disabled vehicle shudder.
Or maybe that was her, shaking.
She gave up any pretense of strategy. Amara was off to her right, Lorna just beyond her. Tabs started chucking big, nasty bombs up and over the tank, angling to the left.
Amara was an easy target for the chopper - being a-flame had a tendency to make you easy to see. She took a moment to duck around the side of the tank to see where the choppers were at, pulling back abruptly when she nearly got hit by it's fire.
"Polaris, could you give me and Meltdown some cover? If we try and hit the transport at the same time, I think we've got a good chance of finishing it off."
"On it!" There was a time when Lorna would have been able to singlehandedly crash both choppers to the ground but attempting that right now would just about have her killed. Her body was working on auto-pilot and was protecting her from severely overusing her powers. She wasn't as strong, wasn't as powerful but she was not about to let that stop her.
Closing the distance, Lorna worked on sabotaging the weapons, concentrating on damaging the rocket pods that were mounted on the stub-wing pylons of the craft. The last thing they needed to deal with where air-to-surface missiles. The four-blade, twin-engine attack helicopter continued to fire at random but Lorna managed to stop the bullets' projection and it stilled in the air, levitating for just a moment before it fell to the ground.
Tabitha formed a bomb in each hand, concentrating as much nastiness as she could into each orb. "Magma, my buddies need a ride. Think you can get them up there?" She didn't take her eyes off the explosive globes. They kind of scared her.
Amara nodded. "Let's go." While Lorna kept working on weapons, Amara darted out once more, building up a lava slide under her feet and cresting it up towards the final transport so Tabby could get closer. The transport was in trouble, the damage they'd already done slowing it down considerably. One last assault from them should take it out.
"I want to get these in the intakes!" Tabs shouted to her impromptu chauffeur. Between the two women, she managed to find the current for first one, then the other intake.
The resulting explosion knocked them both to the ground.
