Jubilee eyed Doctor McCoy suspiciously as he walked toward her with a
needle. The claw marks on the left side of her face were started to
throb and she wondered briefly if she'd been poisoned. Amanda was lying
in the bed over from her, hooked up to an EEG machine that was making a
faint ping sound every few seconds. Jubilee didn't want to think about
the fact that Amanda had saved her bacon back there. Dr McCoy smiled and
leant toward her. "Now, we're just going to numb up the area so I can
put some stitches in. This will only take a second."

"Can you numb her whole bleedin' face, as well, doc?" Amanda asked,
wearily, without opening her eyes. "She's got a mouth on her, this one."
Most of the blood had been cleaned from her face, but it still caked her
hair and those hard-to-reach places, and her shirt was stiff with it.

Jubilee glanced over at Amanda and wrinkled her nose. "Sefton, I'd say
I'm not the one with the bleeding mouth. Now how about you shut up so
the nice doctor can take care of my face?"

Dr McCoy shook his head at the two teenagers, finishing injecting the
solution that would numb Jubilee's face so he could apply the stitches.
Reaching back, he pulled out the needle and thread and started
stitching. "If you do not stay quiet, Miss Lee, you will get more then a
small scar from these injuries."

Amanda held her tongue whilst McCoy worked on Jubilee, settling for
making a rude gesture at her behind his back. The doctor had the power
to make her stay in medlab for an unspecified period, and she was damned
(no pun intended) if it was going to be for longer than the time it took
to do these bloody tests. But once he'd finished stitching up the gash
and put a bandage over it, she took the opportunity to resume their
baiting. Childish, she knew, but she was tired and wired at the same
time, and her head was starting to really be obnoxious.

"Nice look, Lee. Yer gunna need a public health warnin' lookin' like
that. You'll scare all the kiddies."

Jubilee grimaced as she felt the stitches pull slightly as she began to
talk, causing her voice to be slightly slurred. "I'd think you'd schare
them more, what with all the bloody and jewelery. Bitsh. "

"'S only temporary. Soon's as the doc's satisfied me brain's gunna stay
put, it's me for a nice, long, hot shower." Amanda stressed the
adjectives. "Which yer not gunna be able t' do, not with that lot in yer
face."

Jubilee picked at her fingernails, not letting the other girl see how
much it disturbed her finally realising that she wouldn't be able to
wash off any of the grime she'd acquired from the battle. It wasn't that
there was blood, it was the smell of burnt clothing that reminded her of
something, only she couldn't think what.

"Any way, yer just shitty 'cause I saved yer arse out there," Amanda
continued.

Jubilee laughed. "Oh please. You so did not save my ass. I was totally
gonna waste that guy and you just happened to get there first."

"Oh sure. An' how were you gunna take him down? By bleedin' all over
him?" The machine Amanda was hooked up to 'pinged' loudly and she
lowered her voice, not wanting the results to be too all over the place.
"If I hadn't zapped him for you, you'd be in intensive care with Le Beau
right now."

Jubilee opened her mouth and then groaned in pain as her stitches
pulled. "I'd say you were doin' enough bleeding for both of us. So, ya
saved me once, it's what you're supposed to do. Or did they give you
medals for being human back in Britain?"

"Fuck you," Amanda muttered, unable to hide how much that one had hit
home. In Limbo, with the dark power of the place coursing through her,
she'd felt... good. More than good - it had felt better than anything
else she'd ever experienced, at least until she'd hit her limit and her
brain had tried to dribble out her ears. "I'm just as fuckin' human as
you, Lee."

Jubilee smiled, she wasn't sure what it was about Amanda that brought
out the bitch in her. She wasn't usually like this with anyone. But
there was an almost overwhelming need to push this girl's buttons.
"Well, least you didn't freak out and let them use you as a punching bag
this time."

"I didn't freak out last time - that was you, remember?" Amanda groaned
and rubbed her temples. The headache was growing, and had brought friends.

Jubilee shook her head and clenched her fist around the sudden shaking
in her fingers. "Don't know what you're talkin' about."

"You get clonked on the head in there as well, Lee? During the attack,
you freaked out, did a runner, an' hid out in the boathouse for three
days. Cain had t' drag you back in." Amanda shook her head as much as
the sensors stuck to it would allow. "If you can't remember that, yer
more mental than I thought."

Jubilee's hands began to crawl with sparks, and her eyes took on a far
away look. "You're lying, I'd have remembered that. You're just a lying
bitch whose too damn interested in herself to care about what she does
to other people. Did you get a laugh out of what you did to Doug? Did it
make you feel powerful? Yeah, you're human but you might as well be one
of those demons for all you give a damn about the people round here."

"An' yer a crazy bitch who can't deal with shite, so you pretend it
never happened." Amanda shot back, angry now. "You ran away, Lee. You
left yer mates t' fend for 'emselves, an' fucked off. An' yeah, maybe I
don't care about people, but at least I stick by an' face up t' what I
done. Yer been wanderin' 'round the place pretendin' everything's fine
an' wishing away anythin' you don't like."

Jubilee stared at Amanda in shock, her eyes unfocussed and dilated. She
wasn't in the Medlab any more, was back in that night, opening a door
and finding a man with a gun pointed directly at her head. "No... that
isn't true. I didn't run. I killed him and then, God the smell. And he
screamed and I, and I... NOOOOOO!"

Amanda rolled off the bed, as a volley of sparks erupted from Jubilee's
hands and hit the ceiling, shorting out one of the lights. The pounding
of feet could be heard over Jubilee's screams, and Hank and Madelyne
burst in. One look at Jubilee, huddled on the bed, screaming her lungs
out, clutching at her head, and Hank leapt to restrain her whilst
Madelyne set up a tranquilising shot. Jubilee didn't appear to notice as
the needle was jabbed into her arm, but as the drug took effect, her
screams slowed, and then stopped. She fell limp in Hank's arms, and he
lay her back down on the bed.

Amanda, watching all this wide-eyed as she peered over the edge of the
bed, said as the two doctors turned to her accusingly: "I didn't do
nothin'."

Oooh, bad Amanda. It's not nice to provoke the head case, bad things almost always happen when you do.
