Crystal and Warren - Freedom of the Skies
May. 4th, 2010 07:26 pmBackdated. As promised, Warren takes Crystal out to dinner to celebrate her release from Medlab.
The restaurant was what would be called a fancy one, of course. There were plenty of those in New York, so it was easy to find one to suit any mood. While Crystal did not feel that she always had to eat at expensive restaurants, this was a celebration. She'd been unconcious for a week, completely powerless, and now she needed a night out. She was dressed in a simple yet elegant yellow dress, and seated at the table with someone she knew also didn't have to worry about the cost of the meal.
Warren had a tendency to trend towards more expensive restaurants - partly was it was because that's what he was used to, and the other part was mostly because he liked eating good food. And you didn't always get that in the less expensive restaurants. It also depended on his company - outside the glittering social circle he had a place in working for his father and being a Worthington, he didn't have too many friends that appreciated this sort of place. Crystal, on the other hand, certainly did. And he just couldn't imagine sitting anywhere else with her.
The waiter had already come to take their orders, and was now returning with the bottle of champagne Warren had ordered. It was indeed a celebration, and he wasn't about to let it go past without at least one bottle of the stuff. It's not like either of them had to worry about driving home, really. He leant back enough to let the waiter pour them their drinks, smiling over to Crystal once he was finished. He picked up his glass, raising it to Crystal.
"Here's to being out of bed," he said with a slight twinkle in his eye.
Crystal raised her own glass. "To being awake and being able to keep myself aloft," she added to the toast, knowing that her words held one meaning to those at the table but could be understood differently by anyone listening in. Not that she expected anyone to be listening, and if the discussion ever turned to "secret" matters, she would be sure to make sure that the words did not reach the ears of anyone save herself and her winged dining companion. Anyone who recognized her would probably be well aware of the fact that she was a mutant, but she knew she same did not hold true for Warren Worthington III.
Warren grinned, clinking his glass against hers before taking a sip. It was excellent champagne, to go along with the excellent company. Warren had never made a secret of his pro-mutant leanings- even if he hadn't come out as yet as a mutant, a lot of the legal work he'd done in California had involved mutant rights cases. And it certainly didn't help being seen out with someone like Crystal, though it had yet to bother him.
"There really is nothing like returning to full health," he said after his sip, lowering his glass. "So, Miss Amaquelin. What are your plans for the summer? It can't be too far away at all now."
"School may be out for the summer, but I still have so much to do," Crystal replied. "I still need to continue my training in order to become an officially licensed paramedic in New York City. I have completed the Basic training requirements and will be done with the Intermediate classes before the summer begins, but I am still far away from completing the entire program. Summer classes provide an excellent opportunity to learn during a shorter span of time. Of course, I will also be spending a portion of my summer in Attilan, spending time with my family and the students and faculty of ABSAE. There are always places to go and people to see, yes? In addition, one never knows when something in New York could require my special skills once more." She took another sip of her champagne.
"Sounds like you'll be keeping very busy then," he said with a teasing grin. "Perhaps even busier than usual. I hope you'll remember to keep some time in your schedule for fun and relaxation, wherever you are."
The young blonde smiled. "I never have a problem staying busy. Whether it involves learning, teaching, or acting in a capacity as a member of royalty, there will always be something for me to do. Never a dull moment, that is what they say, is it not? Of course, I make sure that I have time to fly every day, swim at least several times a day, and dance. It is always important to exercise, but I find all of these things to be a way to enjoy myself and relax. This is a good way to relax, too, out to a fine dinner with an excellent dinner companion. So many of the dinners I attend are crowded affairs with so many people to greet."
"I know the feeling," he said with a grin. "My father does his best to keep my schedule as full of meetings and social gatherings as possible. But I make sure I carve out enough time to do the things I want to do. X-Men training, a few social gatherings of my own. And flying, of course. Though I never can get enough of that."
Crystal nodded, taking another sip of her champagne. "There is nothing quite like the freedom of the sky, being able to be high above the ground with nothing in the way of being able to move in the air. Floating down a hallway is not at all the same as being able to fly outside, high above the trees." Thanks to a manifestation occuring well before she went through puberty, and spending more than two years in a dimension different than the one she had resided in for most of her life, Crystal had been flying for over a dozen years. Of course, not all of those years involved being able to fly very well, Crystal thought, a faint smile playing upon her lips as she recalled her early flights in the palace halls.
"No, there isn't," Warren agreed with a smile. He'd been flying since he was fourteen, and even with the somewhat painful and traumatic growing-in of his wings, he'd loved it from the moment he'd taken to the skies. Living in big cities had always meant he couldn't fly as much as he'd like, but he still did it whenever he could. It was even better when he had a partner to fly with, as he'd discovered when he'd go flying with Jay.
"Here's to the freedom of the skies. May we always fly high in clear skies." He raised his glass, smiling warmly to her.
For the second time that evening, Crystal raised her glass in a toast with Warren. "To the freedom of the skies," she agreed, her glass clinking against Warren's glass, "and may the wind always take us where we wish to go."
