Julian and Angel stop for gasoline on their way to Malibu and Julian tells a little white lie.

Backdated to Thursday

The sun was rising behind them as the jeep pulled into the desolate parking-lot of the gas station in the middle of nowhere. "Thank goodness this place was here," he said in a gruff tone. They'd been driving in shifts since midnight and were nearly out of gas- which was impressive given the fact they were in the middle of the Mojave wastes. "We're making good time, don't you think, Angel?"

"I'll say Mr. "Stop for no one, not even children being chased by zombies"," came the wry response as Angel stepped out of the car so she could stretch. She'd been sort of taken aback by Julian's desire to get there as soon as possible and she hadn't been able to get much out of him. But it had been late and she'd left it alone for the most part but she was watching him like she thought he was up to something.

Then again, she always thought Julian was up to something so that wasn't really new.
Julian slid his credit card at the machine and quietly hoped that his account still had enough money to get them a tank of gas. "I would have hit the zombies with the jeep- the kid would have been fine after that," he attempted a smirk as the card was accepted and he began the process of refueling the vehicle.

She leaned her hip on the car and slipped her hair out of it's ponytail so she could redo it. "You're such a softie," Angel drawled, squinting around them as she tried to wake up. "So, what did you tell Nico, anyway? She doesn't seem the jealous sort but I'm interested in how you convinced her that traveling with your ex was a good idea."
Julian shrugged and leaned against the car, "I told her that we were eloping to Las Vegas and that we were going to have a brood of mutant babies and put together some sort of stage show at the Ceaser's Palace. That is still our plan, right?"
“Oh sure, I remember now. You were going to cross-dress as Cher in our main act. And, by the way, we’re having ten and not one more for our brood. I need to try to retain some of my girlish figure, after all.”

"You have a girlish figure now?" Julian took the slug to his arm and chuckled. "Seriously though, I just told her we were going out to LA to take care of some business with my family. She was pretty understanding."

“Oh, yeah? And speaking of it, I haven’t asked because you were hell bent on getting us there but since it’s just you, me, the gas pump and that guy with one eye over there, what is going on? Obviously it was urgent enough for you to almost pull –“ She swallowed the words ‘lone wolf’ and thought about Nick with a hitch in her breath. “A runner in front of Jean.”

Julian considered telling her for a moment, then decided against it. Angel was a company woman, through-and-through- she'd instantly call the communications board back at the mansion and he'd be swamped with X-Men trying to take care of this for him. "My little brother is sick," Julian lied, looking down at the crushed rock under their feet. "Like, um, could die, sick."

Angel froze and whatever smart-ass thing she had been preparing to say, because it was Julian after all, disappeared. “Oh my god, Julian!” She grabbed his elbow and shook him slightly. “Why didn’t you tell Jean that? She probably would have still made me come but she’s a doctor, she would have understood! I’m so sorry!” Unsure of what to do, she gave him a sort of sideways hug.

He instantly regretted the lie and knew it would be trouble when she found out, but it was too late to turn back now. "Um, thanks?" he was frozen in place. Only the bell ringing on the pump knocked him back into reality. "Okay, we're fueled. Do you need to use the bathroom?"

“Like you wouldn’t believe. The will of an elephant, the bladder of a peanut.” She squeezed once more before she let go. Going to the bathroom would give Julian some alone time, too, to regain some composure. Angel patted his arm as she headed out. “I’ll grab some drinks when I’m done and then we’ll get on the road!”
