Meggan and Garrison, Thursday Evening
Mar. 31st, 2011 06:04 pmMeggan goes to the stables to sneak Daisy a bag of treats, and runs into Garrison. Together, they feed Daisy her dinner.
After the last of her classes had ended, Meggan had decided to sneak some food to Daisy the Moose. To that end, she was bringing a small bag of twigs and leaves from the tree near her room, three carrots, and an apple. If it turned out to be a little too much for a snack, she’d leave the bits that were left there for the next time someone fed her.
“Hey, Daisy,” Meggan called softly.
"Just what would you do if she said hello back?" Garrison's voice came from the dark end of the stable, and the Canadian walked back out towards the middle with a pair of steel pails in either hand. From where she stood, the buckets looked filled with wet bright green leaves, almost like seaweed.
Meggan grinned at the question. “I’d wonder if someone was using their powers to mess with me.” Or if someone cast a spell that had somehow gone and backfired just enough to give Daisy a voice of her very own. “If it wasn’t that, I’d really hope she wouldn’t get her very own moose reality show once word spread. Once I got over the massive amounts of surprise, that is.”
"She is Canadian. They love us on television down here." Kane carried the buckets over to the stall that the moose was standing in, and gave her nose a pat with his hand as he set down the buckets. "You hungry, madam?"
“Even higher ratings if it was a talk show instead,” Meggan guessed. She watched as Daisy began to calmly begin to eat from one of the buckets. “Should I leave some of this here for later? Just these leaves and twigs. It could be a midnight snack for her, if she wants it,” she offered. The carrots and apple she could just bring back some other time.
"Let her get a little real food in before dessert. Here," He nudged aside her nose as she delved back into the bucket. "Come on, you greedy girl. Not like that." He waved Meggan over to the deep trough that was filled to the top with water. "Moose mostly eat aquatic plants; stuff that grows in the shallows of lakes and things. There's a fishery about an hour from here that's willing to sell us plants from their fry pools. However, if you just leave it in the bucket, she gorges on it. so-" Kane fished out a double handful of the plants and dumped them in the trough. Daisy's nose dipped down under the water and she fished out a mouthful of them, chewing contentedly.
"You want to give it a go?"
“Yes, please,” Meggan confirmed. She put the bag aside, where it wouldn’t get wet, before going to help out. “So they’re a little like giant lily pads,” she guessed as she reached in to pick up a handful. When Daisy finished chewing on the ones he had given, Meggan dropped her portion into the trough.
"Some. Duck weed, yellow lily and pondweed too." He stepped back to give Meggan more room. "I called a guy in Forestry to come out and take a look at the lake. He'll do some tests and see if we can, well, let her graze in the shallows around it safely and get the food she needs. I can imagine the line of kids wanting to take the moose for a walk if that happens."
Meggan could easily see that happening. “That would be nice for her. I think Molly would also probably want to be at the very front of any line that formed,” she grinned while waiting for the moose to be ready for the next portion of her meal. When she popped back up, she gave her nose a little scratch before putting in more.
"I have no doubt. Not sure what they'll end up doing with her, but at least we can make sure she's getting properly fed and doesn't get used to buckets and feeding times." Garrison sat back on a hay bale, patting one of the horses that nickered and nudged the back of his shoulder. "As long as no one tries to ride her, we'll be fine."
Meggan nodded before she served up another portion of pondweed. “That would really hurt her, wouldn’t it? Or would she just give them a good bite before they could finish trying to hop on?” She knew anyone trying to get on her back probably wouldn’t be good for the moose, no matter what her age was.
"It would likely scare her, and end up getting the person who tried it trampled. Moose, even a younger one like Daisy, can do a lot of damage very quickly when they're spooked." He pulled up a knee and rested his chin on it. "Which is she can't just be treated like a big horse. So, watch your fingers when you feed her the apple and carrots, eh?"
Meggan winced a little at the thought of Daisy causing massive damage to anybody. She nodded, understanding the warning. “I’ll be careful when I feed her treats, I promise. I don’t want to get nipped.” Or become fingerless if she bit down too hard. She liked those fingers where they were, thank you very much.
"She won't do it intentionally. Just remember that she's a wild animal." One of the horses behind him huffed loudly. "Yeah, not like this group of over-priviliaged show ponies. Just be slow and patient with her, and it'll be fine."
“I’ll remember to be careful with her,” Meggan promised. At the snuffling noises following his comment, however, she laughed. “Maybe the horses are just putting in requests for even more treats, too.”
"When are they not? I think the beginning of the school year is like Christmas for them, when all of the new students discover there are horses on the estate and wheel down a truckload of apples and clover for the greedy buggers." He gave the closest one an affectionate pat. While Kane didn't own any of the horses at Xavier's, he was a regular on their exercise rotation, keeping his own skills up to par. After all, it was hard to be a member of the RCMP if you couldn't do the 'Mounted' part.
“If they’re that honed in for a treat, maybe I could give half of the carrot to Daisy when it's time, and the other part to whichever one of them is in the mood for it.” Since Daisy was looking at the trough again as though she were waiting for someone to hurry up and get on with her meal, Meggan put in a handful of yellow lily.
"You feed them once, you're going to need to keep feeding them." Kane laughed, shaking his head. "It looks like you got Daisy figured out, so I'll leave you to it. Thank care, Meggan."
“They’ll start eyeing me with sad little looks, waiting for a treat every time I come down here, then,” Meggan realized. “You, too,” she smiled over her shoulder as she waited to see if Daisy was going to give her the look that requested more food again.
