Jan and Matt - Shopping fun! (backdated)
Apr. 20th, 2011 02:18 pmMatt could use some new clothes, and Jan decides to make sure he gets them. Matt just loves shopping... not.
Little fists pounded on the door to one of the many bedroom doors in the mansion which housed Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. The fact that the hands doing the pounding were part of a body that was only one-inch in size didn't prevent the sound from being effective as smaller size did not mean less strength in this case. "Hey Matt, are you around?" The sound of the spoken voice, however, could only be heard by a select few residing in the mansion, one of those being the boy Jan had come to see. She had Plans, oh yes she did!
Matt had fallen asleep, which wasn't something he usually did in the afternoons, but it was a slower, boring day and he had nothing that really appealed to him to do. So he was napping. The pounding at his door woke him up though, "Huh?" he murmured, rolling over, "Come in!" he called, unsure if was hearing things or not. He wasn't supposed to with the sound dampeners in his room, but whatever, maybe it was a dream?
Jan flew in... to complete and total darkness. Hello! Oh, right. A blind kid didn't need light. And not only was there a lack electrical light, there was also a distinct lack of light coming in from the outside. She hovered near the doorway, leaving the door open so light from the suite gave her enough light to see. Crashing into things was not fun in any size. "Wait... were you asleep? It's, like, the middle of the afternoon! OK, so it's spring break, but still! There's so much to do! Probably got bored from all of your reading! Well, no worries, I'm not about to let you spend the entire next week doing nothing but reading!"
Reaching over to the bedside clock, he pushed a button and the clock spoke the time in a mechanical voice. "Nothing wrong with a nap!" Matt protested, sitting up and rubbing his eyes since he had sleep in them. Running a hand through his hair, he stood up, wearing only his boxers, "Why are you so hyper?" he was confused, not only because of sleep, but because he was very clearly hearing Jan and wasn't sure where she was. Normally people gave a very defined location with their voices when they spoke and this time there was the voice, but no real location. "And where are you?"
"I'm not hyper!" Jan protested. "Well, if I am, I'm always hyper. That's just the way I am! It's better than being all sad and mopey! And I'm near your door, and I can come back later if you really want to sleep the day away, but if you actually want to go out and do stuff, put on some clothes and come talk to me out in the main part of the suite."
More amused than bothered, Matt disappeared into the attached bathroom for a minute, then went about pulling his clothes back on. He was dressed as he typically was, in baggy jeans and oversized t-shirt. Slipping his sunglasses on and grabbing his shoes and cane, it did not take him long to get ready, "Okay, okay," he grinned, much more awake now as he entered the living area. "What? You've never seen boxers before?" he teased, completely unconcerned with being seen naked. He had scars on his body, but nothing too terrible.
"Dude, I've seen boxers before," Jan said, rolling her eyes, "just hadn't been planning on seeing yours." Seeing kids in their underwear was definitely not on Jan's top ten list of things to do. It wasn't as though she had planned on seeing Matt in his boxers, but still. Next time she'd just meet him out in the suite. "Coming in for a landing so you don't have to wonder where I am." She dropped down lightly on his head. "OK, so, we are going to go into town! I figure shopping and maybe a movie if you want."
"Hey!" Matt reached up touching her carefully. "Why can't you just be big?" he asked, curious. Her being little like this confused him. "But okay. Whatever you want since you're apparently the man with the plan. Or woman. You driving or are we taking a bus?" it wasn't as if he could drive. Getting his wallet and keys, he left the suite.
"It's fun being small!" Jan protested. "Gives me a whole different perspective on the world, and I can do things I can't do while full-sized. And I'm driving, of course. We'll need to drop by my suite so I can get my stuff. I have some clothes that shrink, but keys and ID and all of that other stuff come in one-size only."
"Alright then, to your suite," it was sort of funny having a girl on his head. But well, still weird. Heading to her suite, cane arching in front of him, Matt commented, "I am not carrying your purse. You gotta figure that out on your own."
"Aw, you don't want to carry my purse for me? So sad." Jan didn't really sound sad, though, and she was actually amused. "But, you know, that's OK, I can carry my stuff all by myself! People tend to be weirded out by the sight of a bag flying on its own, though, so I guess I'll just have to be full-sized while we shop!" Which she'd already been planning on doing, anyway. That and driving as she needed to be at her full height for that.
"You can carry your stuff when you're little?" that was sort of cool. "And we're not dating, so no. No purses. Sorry."
"Yep, I can carry stuff when I'm little!" Jan grinned. "I can even pick people up when I'm tiny! Not that I do that a bunch, but it's happened before. I don't have some big giant girly purse, by the way. I don't need to carry everything but the kitchen sink with me when I go places, and since I will sometimes just fly places rather than drive I've learned to carry just a couple of things with me when needed."
"That's actually pretty cool," he did not ask her to prove it though by picking him up. He was good with both feet on the ground. "Whatever makes you happy, Jan." Matt thought girls were weird.
"Here's my stop!" Jan announced as they reached her suite, leaping off her human perch and regaining her full size in the hallway. "I'll be right out." And she was, remaining in her room only long enough to grab what she needed. "Let's go buy stuff!" she said only moments after she had left the hall.
"Lead on," Matt agreed, reaching out for Jan's shoulder so that he could take it. He didn't have to anymore in the school, but it was easier. "Whatever you want," growing up without a lot of money and then being in foster care meant that Matt really didn't 'shop' per se. Being a blind teenage guy did not help either, but that was really secondary to not having much money. He had an allowance each month from the money the state gave for his care, but he rarely spent it.
"Well, it's more what you want, right?" Jan's tone was cheerful as they made their way to the garage. "I don't know what you're comfortable wearing or what you don't like. Sure I could go around just grabbing cool stuff for you to try, but you've got to give me an idea of what to go searching for if you want me to pick stuff out."
Wait, what? Matt stopped, "I thought you wanted to get stuff?" he asked, confused. He didn't need anything right now, his clothes were fine, especially since it was warming up now and he didn't need heavy winter things. Winter was always hard. This year his jacket had disappeared when he'd gone to rehab which meant he'd have to go find one for next winter and his jacket had been perfectly fine too!
"I'll get stuff, too, but so will you." He'd thought she was just going to go shopping for herself and he'd agreed to go? Huh, that was sort of interesting and unexpected. Poor kid must be really bored out of his wits to be OK with that! "You need stuff, so we're going to get you stuff. Clothes, shoes... anything else you need, too."
Reaching for his wallet, Matt checked to see how much was in there. He already knew, but he checked again anyways. Each bill was folded a different way so that he would know which denomination was which, "I'm fine," he protested, "I don't need anything," he wasn't all that bored, it was just that he was used to being dragged shopping by girls whether he needed anything or not. Company, he supposed, since he was terrible at giving opinions.
Maybe he didn't think he needed anything new, but yeah, he so did. "Come on, it won't be so bad, I promise. I'm not going to say it will be tons of fun, but at least it will be something different and you'll have new stuff, too. New stuff is always good."
Shrugging, Matt headed towards the garage again, "If you insist," he agreed, grumbling. He was not a fan of shopping for himself. Clothes tended to be too expensive or too itchy against his skin. He liked things that were soft, especially breathable fabrics. And he generally liked his clothes a size or two too big too so that it didn't touch him as much.
"It's just shopping, not a torture session." From the way Matt was acting, you'd think Jan was about to do something horrible to him, not help him out. "We'll make it as quick as possible, OK? We can grab some dinner, too, if you want, but no getting food poisoning again because then I will totally feel like crap."
"You didn't give me food poisoning!" Matt protested, getting in the car, "I left it out too long then ate it. That's all. And okay. I got money for dinner." It wasn't that shopping was torture, it was just that it was boring. Jan was fun though, so maybe it would be cool.
"Still, no more food poisoning." Something didn't have to be someone's fault for them to feel bad about it, and if she took him out somewhere to eat twice and he got food poisoning both times... yeah. Just no. "Off we go! Let the adventure begin!"

An hour later, Jan had discovered why shopping with Matt wasn't much fun. He'd rejected pretty much everything at every store as being either too scratchy or too expensive. The only things he had even been willing to try on he had complained were too tight and had wanted larger sizes. It was frustrating, not just for Jan, but for Matt too. Sighing, he tried on the new pants she had just handed him over the door to the changing room. "Jan!" he opened the door a minute later, the pants buttoned and zipped up. "They're too tight!"
"They're the right size, but that doesn't always mean the same thing. What do you want, one size bigger?" Hopefully not too many sizes; the pants were supposed to stay on after all.
"Sure," he agreed. Anyone looking at him would argue that the pants fit how they were supposed to fit, but Matt had sensitive skin as a part of his powers. He didn't like anything fitted, claiming it was too tight.
"OK, I'll be right back." Jan didn't really want to argue with Matt. An extra size wasn't that big of a deal, and besides, there was this amazing thing called a belt. Matt wasn't the first mutant to have issues with clothing due to his powers and he wouldn't be the last. It wasn't as though Jan herself was a stranger to the idea of clothing complications due to being a mutant. Luckily, it didn't take too long to find the larger size, and she was returned quickly. "Here, try these," she said, handing him the pants.
Matt did at least wear a belt. He wasn't a sagger with his underwear showing and all that. "Better," he agreed. They were a more relaxed fit and he stepped out with the new pants on, "Okay. Opinion?" he asked.
"It works," Jan answered. "The other pair looked fine, but hey, they didn't work for you and these do, no problem. The right size for you is what's important here, right?"
Shrugging, Matt headed back into the dressing room, "I still don't know why I need jeans," he remarked as he changed, "My clothes are fine. It's not like they sent me here naked," which was true, but it wasn't like he had a lot of things either. Mostly he had a couple pairs of jeans, a pair of nicer pants for court appearances and some t-shirts of varying sleeve lengths, plus a button up shirt, again for court appearances. It wasn't like he needed much.
"You need new clothes, so you're getting new clothes," Jan replied matter-of-factly. "Come on, new school, new home, new life, new friends, new clothes. Besides, is it going to hurt you to have more stuff in your wardrobe? I mean, if you ask me, you can never have too many clothes, but we don't have to get you too much stuff, just a little bit of everything you need. It's also good to have a spare outfit or two in case something happens to one you were planning on wearing. You'll need shirts, too. What about pants? Anything else?"
"I got pants," Matt said indicating the ones he had just tried on. "You can find a shirt if you want. I got shirts though too," Jan made it sound like he had enough clothes for a couple days, which wasn't true. He had at least a week, maybe more. In his head he knew that was probably not the norm, that most people had lots of clothes and things, but it had never much bothered him only having a little, if nothing else, it made laundry easier. "They got anything plain?" he preferred basic solids without prints or anything that might do something funny in the wash.
Plain was sort of boring. It was, well, plain. But Jan wanted Matt to feel comfortable with things. Obviously he wasn't jumping for joy at being here and shopping right now, so as long as he found clothes he liked that weren't horrible, Jan was going to consider the afternoon as a win. "Yep, they've got plain stuff. Be right back again!"

Armed with a couple bags of clothes and a mini-blizzard from Dairy Queen, the duo headed back to the car. The afternoon had been a success. Definitely. Matt still did not care for shopping, but he had some new stuff and it was probably nicer than anything else he owned, which was good. Made him feel very in style, even if the clothes weren't. "You ever think of being a professional shopper, Jan?" he asked, one hand on her shoulder as they reached the car. "You're good at it."
"A professional shopper?" Jan laughed. Hmm, the idea wasn't a bad one, although from what Jan knew about the job it was very time consuming. "Getting paid to shop does sound cool, but for now, I think I'll keep my shopping expertise for just me and the people I like."
