Laurie is bailed up by one of the friends of a victim, wanting to know what's being done.

The door to the office all but slammed open, bouncing off the wall behind it as a rather diminutive young woman came into the X-Factor Investigations office. The heels of her shoes clicked sharply against the hard wood floor and she beelined straight for the only person in the office. Onto the desk the young woman threw down a newspaper folded over to expose the article on DeShawn James, the latest victim of the killer everyone believed had also killed Mohit. "What are you doing about this?" she demanded.

Laurie looked up from the correlating she'd been doing, blinking at the woman for a moment before looking down at the newspaper. "And you are?"

"Stephanie." The word was short and terse. She was in no mood to give the girl any more than that because she would not allow the topic to be sidestepped on the matter.

"Well, Stephanie," Laurie began, straightening the files she'd been working on and making a note on the computer before she gave the woman her full attention. "What exactly is it that you think we should be doing?"

Stephanie's eyes narrowed sharply. "Not sitting on your ass being a smartass. You're supposed to be finding my friend's killer, not giving people fucking attitude."

"Wouldn't that be more a job for the police?" Laurie asked, pushing her chair back and standing up. She wondered if Stephanie would like a cup of tea, it might even help with the anger, although she had a feeling the young woman wouldn't thank her for offering. Instead, she simply walked over to the small kitchenette and turned on the kettle before taking two cups out. "I can possibly put you in contact with someone if you like."

"The police?" She was aghast. "You mean the idiots who didn't put it together until the internet pointed it out? No, I don't think it's a job for the police.” Reaching into a back pocket, Stephanie pulled out a flyer she had folded up. It was clearly homemade and had snippets of news on it. Among them was the snippet about X-Factor having been hired by someone to look into one of these murders. It went down onto the desk next to the newspaper. “I think it's a job for the people who claim to be the mutant cops. But you obviously don't give a fuck either, do you? People are getting sliced up all over the city and now your people tell us it might be because they're all mutants. Your people are going around and talking to everyone and you're sitting here telling me it's not your job? What fucking planet do you live on?"

Laurie placed two cups on the kitchenette bench and turned, giving Stephanie a look that was somewhere inbetween compassion and exasperation, "I live on exactly the same planet as you do, Stephanie, and on the planet Earth where we live, charging into the office of someone and demanding that they tell you everything is not the best way to get somebody to help you. I am not somebody who reacts well to bullies, whether they have a good reason to be upset or not. Now, my collegues are doing their jobs and gathering information. If you have something you can add to their investigation then I'll be happy to take notes and get them to talk to you, otherwise you're wasting both our times coming here like this."

"So what you're saying is that you know nothing, your 'colleagues,'" she included the finger quotes, "are doing nothing and you're just as inept as the cops? Fucking brilliant. When you've got a close friend slaughtered with no one looking into it beyond the first week you can tell me about what is and is not helpful. Until then you can either tell me what you people are actually doing about it or admit that you're just as useless as the cops."

"Stephanie, I understand that you've lost a friend," Laurie replied after a long moment of careful breathing. She would not allow herself to snap back at this woman, she'd been trained better then that. "But we are doing everything in our power to stop this criminal, and while I know that it might not seem like we're doing anything at all except talking to people, you'd be surprised at just how helpful information like that can be."

The young woman all but sneered in response. "You haven't told me a single thing you're doing. Therefore, logical conclusion is that you're not doing anything." She was obviously frustrated and the girl in the office certainly wasn't helping. She knew nothing. Or she wouldn't say anything. "Mutant cops," Stephanie scoffed and turned on her heel. "Just as helpful as the real thing." She headed straight for the door and was gone.

The public servant in me is weeping. ;) Laurie should never go into any kind of customer service job, that's for sure.

She'd better - things could go very badly for her if she reacts like that to the grieving family of a patient who want to know what she's doing to save their loved one. ;P
