Mar. 5th, 2004 01:08 amSet Thursday, immediately after this log. Sarah takes the torn photograph up to Shinobi, seeking his advice and help on how to make it better. With the help of modern technology, and a driver's liscence, he delivers. Also: cuteness.
Sarah nearly stomped up the stairs, unable to pick just one reaction to what she'd just done. She was still pissed, oh yes, very fucking much so, but the torn picture in her hand made her feel just the slightest bit guilty. She hadn't meant to tear it, and she certainly understood what it was like to only have the memories of certain people left. It's what she dealt with every day. She knocked on the door, tempted to just push it open and go in,
"Just a second!" Granted, it was a bit closer to fifteen seconds in actuality, but the door was eventually tugged open enough for Shinobi to peek outside. He blinked twice at who's come calling and the state she seemed to be in, and stepped back to clear the doorway, pulling it open further in the process. "Sarah? You alright?"
"Yeah. Just peachy," she said dryly, "Besides the fact that I just chewed out MacTaggart, and y'know, got it back in return, and am now in the posession of a picture of her son that is torn and god fucking damnit if I don't feel guilty!" The more she talked, the more exhasperated she felt. Crossing her arms over her chest, she shot him a sort of hopeless 'I don't suppose I can get out of this by hitting things?' look.
Shinobi blinked slowly as he listened, eyes flicking down towards Sarah's hands as the picture is mentioned, eyebrows melding with his hairline in surprise. MacTaggart has a son? He shook himself, waving towards the couch and offering what he hoped was a reassuring smile. "C'mon in, sweetheart. Can I see the picture?"
She went in, arms still crossed tightly against herself, and curled up on the corner of the couch, pulling her knees up to her chin. She holds out her hand, the pieces of the picture between her thumb and forefinger, a little rumpled from being held so tightly. "Really, she's the one who pulled and ripped it... so I have no fucking idea why I feel so bad."
"Because you're a nicer person than you give yourself credit for sometimes?" Shinobi suggested as he closed the door, turning to follow after Sarah with a brief, worried frown as she curled up. He leant down to give her a quick kiss on the forehead as he carefully took the picture, smoothing the pieces out against his palm as he eyed it critically. "Mmmh.. I think I can fix this.."
"Can you?" She watched him from her perch on the couch, her expression a mixture of pleased relief. "It's important to her."
"I can try." He eyed the photograph a moment longer before setting the pieces down on his open laptop's keyboard, the computer sat on the table where he'd set it aside to go get the door. Holding up a finger, he made a quick dash into his room, rummaging around a moment before returning with the slim scanner from his desk tucked under an arm. "Photoshop is everyone's best friend, luv.. and there should be some suitably glossy paper around here somewhere."
She watched him with a half-amused smile. Of course he could fix it. In her experience, Shinobi could make damn near anything better. "I could just kiss you--except, I'd like to get this done first."
Shinobi grinned mischeviously as he sat on the edge of the couch and leant forward to tug the table closer, setting the scanner down and hooking it up to his laptop. "Oh-ho. Well, you can kiss me after. I certainly won't complain."
"I didn't think so." She leans over to rest her head on his shoulder for a second, only moving because she knows he's probably going to need both hands for this. "Thanks."
"Anything for you." Shinobi smiled, briefly resting his cheek against the top of her head until she moved away, and took the opportunity to place the photo-bits into the scanner in as organized a manner as he could before setting it a-scanning. "I may nip into town to pick up a nice frame, once I see if this works.. want to come, maybe get some food while we're out?"
"You don't have to ask me twice." Finally she shifted, moving so her legs were curled up by the arm of the couch and she was right beside him, watching. "I think I need to get out of here for awhile."
Shinobi made a thoughtful noise, eyeing the Photoshop screen with a critical eye before giving Sarah's knee a light pat as he got to his feet one more time. "Need me tablet.. mm, yes, getting out would be good. I was, ah, thinking of tagging along on this London thing coming up - gives me a chance to get my car shipped here, maybe egg the old man's estate out there - but it wouldn't be as much fun if I didn't get your company for the trip. I know you must hate planes." He smiled a bit, shrugging helplessly as he hurried into his bedroom to fetch his wacom.
"Yes. See, I have problems with stairs. Planes are... fuck. They put me on the jet once. Ask Jono how that one went." She chews on her bottom lip a little, scratching idly at her shoulder. "It's not such a great idea."
"I'll certainly not force you," Shinobi replied as he wandered back in, head tilted curiously as he reclaimed his seat and swapped the scanner's plug out for the tablet's. "I could probably make eyes at Pete to get the car for me while he's there.. as bizarre a thought as Pete behind the wheel of a Jaguar is." He blinked once at the notion, shaking it off. "It'd be nice, and all, but I don't want to make you do something you aren't comfortable with."
She shrugged. "I know. I just don't think I can do it." With a smile, she adds, "Besides, I think I'd find a way around the whole unbreakable thing and break your hand anyway if you got me on a plane."
"If anyone could find a way around it, it would probably be you, this is true. Crafty girl." He grinned, propping his chin up in his free hand as he set to work on the picture, though the grin began to fade once he began to speak again. "Amanda probably doesn't want me along anymore, anyway. Just hope she gets her head back on straight and manages to get back here so we don't have to part on such a sore note."
"She'll be back." Sarah leaned gently against him, hand resting idly on his leg. "They haven't kicked me out yet, and I think I've still got her beat on number of fuck-ups." She was quiet for a moment, and then shifted to look at him curiously. "Who said you couldn't go?"
"She beats the hell out of herself in more damaging ways then you do, though, luv. That's mostly what I'm worried about." He regained some of his grin at the hand against his leg, shifting his attention to Sarah at the question. "Well, nobody did, technically. I just doubt it would be as fun a trip without you there."
"I'm going to make or break the trip?" She laughed, perching her chin on his shoulder. "Somehow I doubt that."
He turned his head enough to fix her with a wry grin, arching an eyebrow. "Maybe not for them, but certainly for me. I can't very well be a posessive jerk if we're not even in the same bloody timezone, now, can I?" He winked playfully, and took advantage of the close proximity to kiss her cheek.
"Give yourself some credit," she grinned, "You're a sexy posessive jerk." Using her free hand she scratched the back of his head, a content little smile on her face. "And I'd like to know who called you that, so I can smack them around some. That'd be entertaining."
"I called myself that, actually," Shinobi chuckled, smiling sheepishly as he unconsciously tilted his head back towards the scratching fingers. "I did leave out the 'sexy' part, though.. thank you for reminding me."
She smiled, leaning up to kiss him. "I think that's my job. Can I put ego-stroking on my resume?"
He was quite happy to duck his head so she didn't have to lean quite so far, making an amused, thoughtful noise against her lips. "Sure, though I think you'd be doomed to a career in politics if you did."
"Right. Like that would ever happen." She didn't move away any farther than she had to, just enough to talk without an extra set of lips getting in the way. "I'll be quite happy to go back to the tunnels and be left alone again after all this is over, thank you very much."
"After what's all over? School?" He tilted his head slightly, blinking twice. "You know.. for some reason, I never even considered you'd go back down there after you were free from this place, and now that you mention it, I can't figure out why I didn't. It's kind of bloody obvious. Huh."
"Yeah, going home. Where else would I go?" Oddly enough she really is taking suggestions. She's in one of those moods.
"I'm.. not sure. It might help if I knew where I'd go." He blinked again, lightly scratching the side of his head with his stylus. "I do rather like it here, maddening though it may be sometimes. Lets me feel.. you know.. useful. Amongst other things. I don't know, maybe a place in the city?" He shrugged, surprised by the loss for ideas he'd found himself in.
"Well. Home is a place in the city. Problem solved." She smiled, and shifted to curl up beside him. "Are you done yet?"
"Hmm? Oh." He shook himself, looking to the screen again to double-check his work. "About, I think.. the colors could use a little brightening up.. photo was a smidgen faded, from the looks of it. You can't see where I painted out the tear, can you?"
Sarah squinted from where she was, finally crawling closer to take a better look. "I can't tell." With a happy smile, she sat back up and gave him a good long kiss. "Have I ever told you how wonderful you are?"
Shinobi made a pleasantly surprised noise at the kiss, though true to his earlier word, he was most definitely not complaining. "Once or twice," he said once he was let up for air, smiling cheerfully and shrugging a shoulder. "It's slowly beginning to sink in, I think."
"Good. Because you are." She nodded, accentuating her words with a finger poking his arm gently. "Best thing that's ever happened to me."
"Well, that's a mighty fine coincidence, since you're the best thing that's ever happened to me. Works out well like that, doesn't it?" He grinned, absently rubbing the poked spot before he rolled his eyes. "Bloody hell, listen to us. Lucky Marie isn't here, or our reputations would be so much rubbish."
Sarah laughed, leaning forward again to give him an affectionate kiss on the cheek. "I think that happened a long time ago. You know, back when I was learning the joys of holding hands." She shrugged. "That's okay, I can still kick all their asses."
"Mmm.. very true. Well, we're both screwed then. May as well enjoy it." Shinobi grinned cheerfully, gesturing down at the laptop's screen. "What say I burn that to a CD, we run into the city to get it printed out nice and get a frame for it, and nab an early dinner?"
"Best idea I've heard all night." She buried her face in his shoulder for a moment, and then looked up at him with a bit of a helpless smile. "Maybe I'll even let you talk me into going on that trip with you."
"Careful. You're practically inviting me to use the puppy eyes now." He smiled, leaning down to warmly kiss her forehead. "Looked a bit gloomy outside earlier.. you can borrow one of my coats. Should I get an umbrella on the way out, or do we care?"
"I'm tough. Your puppy eyes have no effect on me." She grinned, shrugging a little. "We'll dry. I don't care if you don't."
"What kind've bloke would I be if I turned away a chance to play in the rain? With a pretty girl, no less?" He beamed, stealing himself another quick kiss before hopping to his feet. "Let me go grab a CD, and we can get out of here."
