Meggan stops by to visit Sarah and the two compare costumes for the upcoming Hallowe'en shindig.
Meggan was nearly finished with her Halloween costume. She had her white tights and body suit, she had her horn…even if she wasn’t sure how to keep it on, since there wasn’t a strap. To ward off the cold of the night, she’d even found some little gloves that resembled hooves for her hands, and shoes that might go for the same look. She only needed to sew on the lion’s tail that Kyle had found, preferably in a position that wasn’t accidentally crooked. She didn’t want staring for any reasons other than a nice costume. She could find some more white thread for that later, since she had just realized it might not be enough to get it nice and tight.
She knew enough about sewing to know that if she cut corners, she would be running the risk of being a unicorn without a tail, halfway through the night. There was still time, Halloween was still several days away. So now, she was seeking out Sarah. She remembered the discussion on the journals, and was just curious about how her costume hunting had gone. Meggan knocked at the girl’s door, before calling out, “Hi. It’s just me, it’s not a bad time is it?”
Sarah had hung her costume up in her closet, ready to go, and had even found a nice, red cloak that matched the colour of her corset and everything. It was warm and snuggly so she'd have no trouble with the October cold that evening, or so she hoped anyway. She looked up at the sound of someone knocking, and smiled when she recognized the voice. "Sure, come on in, Meggan, it's open!" Turning to face her friend as she came in, Sarah waved at her, glad for the unexpected company. "Heya, what's up?"
Meggan waved back as she came in. “Hey. I was working on the last bits of my costume. I just mostly wondered if you were able to find everything you needed for yours.” It was something Red Riding Hood focused, plus mechanical bits of some sort, as of the last she had read on the journals. Unless Sarah’s plans had changed.
"Oh, costumes, yeah." Sarah smiled from where she'd been sitting on her bed, then bounced up off of it as Meggan asked her about hers. "I think I have it all, yeah! Is there anything I can help you with for yours?" Sarah wasn't really the most handy when it came to that kind of thing but if her friend needed help then she'd do what she could. Reaching the closet, she hesitated for a second before opening it up. "Ok, so, mine's a little... different. Kinda!" She loved it so but it really wasn't something she'd normally think of getting. She blamed Layla for it, and by blamed she meant thanked.
Meggan shook her head. “I was just really curious about yours, that's all. I only need to sew on the white lion’s tail, and I’m done with mine. Once I go downstairs and find some extra white thread, to get it nice and tight.” She had considered painting a little mark where a horn should be on the night of the party, like in the movie—but there was always a chance that nobody would recognize it for what it was, without the actual physical horn. “How’s it different? Is it something like...bits of moving clockwork added?”
"Oh, that sounds like it'll be just great, I can't wait to see it!" The tail would be just adorable, she thought. Sarah shifted her weight from one foot to the other, her hand still resting on the closet doorknob. "It's..." How to put it into words, hmm. Then she figured she might as well just show her, and she opened the door, pulling out the corset and leather pants on one hanger, and the red cloak on another one. "Oh, and there's a whip, too."
“I could come by and show you once I’ve got the tail on. It could be like a trial run, we can see if I’ve got it where I won’t end up missing a tail later, if someone grabs,” Meggan offered with a smile. She walked over to get a better look at the ensemble. “You’re right, it is a different Riding Hood,” Meggan said once she had a good look at it. That might sound bad. “A good, unique different. You won’t look like any other Red Riding Hoods. And you won’t be too cold in the pants and the cloak!” Corsets weren’t something she herself ever wanted to wear again, but it seemed like it would be great fun for Sarah’s costume. A whip? “Oh. That's not for a nonexistent Halloween horse, is it? It’s not like a riding crop.”
"Yes, please do, I bet it looks fantastic!" She giggled at the thought but hoped that no one would actually pull Meggan's tail off. She nodded, still holding onto both hangers. "Yeah, I wanted a steampunk kind of vibe, with the corset anyway." She wiggled that particular hanger, trying to emphasize the different fixtures and whatnot on it. "The pants are kinda, well, plain, but there wasn't too much choice there." Sarah was fond of the colour, however, more than she thought she would be, she'd probably wear them every now and again outside of the costume. She laughed and shook her head at the question. "Nope, it's... it's a real one. Used for..." Actually she didn't want to think about or certainly not talk about what it might've been used for, as she remembered the section of the store in which they'd found it. "...for whipping stuff. But I won't be whipping anyon- anything! Just for show only." Smiling, she nodded to the whip, coiled up on her dresser across the room.
Meggan made a mental note to do just that, the moment the last stitch was in place. “Maybe hang some keys on a pocket? To match a little thing there on the corset.” She pointed in the general direction of a particular fixture toward the bottom. “Not enough of them where the jangle gets even more annoying with each step you take…just so you wouldn’t think it’s too plain anymore.” She thought the pants looked great, though. “You could say the keys are for grandmother’s house, like in the story. Or an old looking fake pocket watch, if there’s one,” she suggested. "Even without frills, the pants still look very pretty to me."
Ah. Yeah, Meggan got that one. It was not the innocent type of whip, then, more the naughty variety. She would not ask where it came from. “Yes! Very good plan for the whip,” she laughed. “Hook it on the corset, and run off into the night.” She wouldn’t know where else to put it.
Sarah lit up at that suggestion. "Yes, that's perfect, what a great idea! Thanks Meggan!" It would be the perfect little touch, and it even fit in perfectly with the lore. "Maybe I can find some old fashioned keys for it too, and a big ol' keyring. That'll be great!" Anything that made her appear even a bit more steampunk was just fine with her. A pocket watch would work too if she could find one. "Thank you, I am kind of fond of them."
She may have been blushing a bit more now as they spoke about the whip. "Exactly, just for display, because I don't, you know." Pause. "Whip things." Another pause. "Regularly." Part of her wanted to scream out it was Layla's idea but it was just as much hers, and she didn't have to get it but she did.
Meggan was thrilled that it helped. “You’re welcome! Would toy wooden keys work at all, if you can’t find old looking normal ones? You could make them look even older somehow, maybe with paint…like something that would come from the oldest room of an ancient cottage in the middle of the forest.” Whatever might work to make it blend in with the story on some level. “If I find any regular old-fashioned ones, I’ll rush them to you.” Could there be any in the stables? Ones that wouldn’t be missed?
“No, no, especially not on Halloween night,” she joked. Had Meggan’s ears gone equally pink in sympathetic blushing? Yes, they certainly had, and she was trying not to laugh. “It’s just a perfect decoration, as you said. No whipping of anything regularly, frequently, at all, or ever.” This attempt at a non-whipping stance was increasingly going off track, but it couldn’t be helped.
"Yeah yeah, those would be great, really old fashioned like." And the fable of Red Riding Hood was ancient itself, so that'd be a perfect fit! "Yes, please do, Meggan, I'd love that!" Her costume was just getting better and better all of the time, thanks to her awesome friends.
"A decoration, exactly." She nodded solemnly, trying not to blush any further. "Not even on, like, special occasions." Wait, when would a special occasion call for a whipping of some sort? "We just saw it and it fit so yeah, here we are, heh." Anytime the ground wanted to swallow her up would be just fine with her, k thanks. "Do you have any props with yours?" There, she'd just change the subject, that'd do nicely.
“I’ll look around when I go see Daisy next,” Meggan promised. “Check the attic, too, there’s always something old and forgotten in attics.” Little interesting bits and bobs were always tucked away under many layers of dust, maybe there was even something that would be perfect for Sarah’s costume.
Changing the subject was really the only way out of that one, she had to admit. Her thanks and relief were evident in the grin she shot Sarah’s way. “No, not really. Not unless the gloves that look like little hooves count as props. It’s just making my hair into a mane, growing some white fur to match the outfit, wherever there's nothing covered. Nothing really big. And then adding the horn.” And the tail being sewn on, couldn’t forget that.
"Aww, Daisy." Everyone's favourite moose! "Thanks Meggan, you rock, seriously." Sarah grinned and tucked some of her hair behind her ear. She really was an awesome friend!
Grateful that said awesome friend went with the shift in topics, Sarah listened to her talk about her costume some more. "Ohmygosh you have gloves like that? Awwwww! That sounds adorable!" It really did sound cute, and the rest of it was so creative, wow. Meggan was really going all out this year it seemed. "I can't wait to see it, you must go put it on right away and show me, please!" And then she could hide her whip of shame away while she did so, shhh.
Meggan would begin a key hunt the minute she finished sewing on that tail. “It took a little bit of searching around a couple of stores, but yes. And a little slip on cover for my shoes, to make those look like hooves, too. Or as close as I could get.” She thought it was probably meant to be a portion of a satyr costume, but it worked for a unicorn costume just as nicely. It was far easier than wearing something ridiculously clunky that would likely as not make you tip over. “I will, I will. I’ll get them right away,” she easily relented with a laugh. She hadn’t shown them to anyone else yet, it could be fun.
One of the man reasons why Meggan rocked hard core. "I love it, it's going to be amazing!" It really would fit a unicorn costume as well, Sarah was sure of it. By all accounts it was going to be one fantastic costume. She grinned and clapped her hands together, excited to see her friend's costume for the first time. "Hehe, I'm sorry, I get carried away easily!" She'd be even more excited to hear that she would be amongst the first to see it if she'd known. "It's going to be a great party, isn't it?"
The enthusiasm for it only made Meggan want to start her key search that much sooner, just to help out. Sewing first, sifting through forgotten corners immediately thereafter. “Don’t worry about it. Being carried away isn’t a bad thing at all when it comes to costumes,” she was quick to assure the other girl. She liked dressing up. “Yes, I really do feel like it’s going to be a great one. A very fun night all around from the sound of everything."
She really should finish her own costume first, Sarah would feel bad if she didn't to instead help her fine tune her own. Hers was pretty much good to go, the key idea was awesome and all but it shouldn't get in the way of Meggan finishing her own amazing costume. "It really is, isn't it? It's kind of what Hallowe'en is all about. Well, that and the candy." Mmm, candy. Sarah wasn't too huge on the whole costume thing before but this year was turning out to be an exception to the rule. "I couldn't agree with you more!"
