Sam calls Laurie - the next person on comms duty - down to take over from him. She's... not quite herself.
Something was up and Sam needed to investigate things. But first he'd need someone to take over his shift on comms duty, he couldn't just get up and leave the position vacant. So he sent out a text to Laurie awhile ago, asking her to come and relieve him, and now he was waiting for her to arrive. He looked at his watch, wondering where she was, then sighed and thought about sending her another message to see what was wrong.
Laurie, or 'Caroline Fry' as she currently thought of herself had been surprised by the beeping alarm that must be some form of communication device, although not quite as surprised as she was to find herself alive and not on a planet of hideous monsters intent on eating her. She'd wondered briefly if she was dreaming, or perhaps that the planet and the ship had been a dream, or maybe she was still in cryo-sleep on her way to drop off settlers and their convict at the nearest base.
Whatever it was, she decided to play along, and she'd answered the male voice. "I'm here," she replied, having pressed several buttons on the face of the device, hoping it was the way you made the thing talk. "Who is this?"
Sam frowned at her reply. "Um, it's Cannonball. Wallflower, is that you?" Since they were speaking over the air now he reverted to codenames. "I need you to cover me at comms asap, there's an incident developing that I've got to look into, over."
"Uh, sure," Caroline replied, a little confused but unwilling to deny what must be some sort of military thing, maybe if she just went along with it all, she'd be able to find out everything she needed to know.
Sam collects Nico, the resident magic expert.
Sam searched for Nico, he needed to find her asap and get her to Stonewall with him. If there was anyone who could do something about all of this, it was her, and every minute it took him to find her was another minute something could happen. "Nico, you there?"
Nico wouldn't comment on how obvious it was that she were in her room. It was her birthday after all, but this time Halloween had had the upper hand and she wasn't in the mood to complain with everyone about how shitty her life was, so when Sam looked into her room -the door was open- he would find her sitting over her knitting table, two needles sticking out of her mouth, and black cloth everywhere.
Seeing as the door was open, he peeked his head in carefully. If she'd been indecent or something she would've either shouted out or had the door shut and locked, he figured, and he was kind of in a hurry. His eyes fell on her, working on something at her table. "There y'are. Come on, I need your help with something' right away." Normally he had more manners than that but he was in X-Men Mode right now and that meant no time for explaining more than necessary or being overly polite.
But the thing was, this was The Mansion, and Stuff happened all the time, so Nico didn't ask nor complained. She would have time to do whatever she was doing later on. So she put everything away and picked up a coat, following Sam with a completely bored face. "Best. Birthday. Ever."
Leading her down the hallway towards the exit, Sam slowed down a little in his frantic pace, still moving towards the outside however. "Wait, it's your birthday?" Aw shoot. Now he felt like crap for being all Leady McLeaderson and demanding her to follow him like she was at his beck and call or something. "M'sorry, Nico. It's an emergency, I didn't..." It was still no excuse, so he'd at least save her that crap. "Happy birthday, kiddo." He'd have to make it up to her later, he declared in his mind, by at least giving her a gift or something. He opened the door to the outside for her, holding it open and gesturing for her to go on, ladies first and all.
Nico sighed. "Hey, it's no problem. It's not like this is the first birthday ruined by Halloween or anything. And I was sewing just...because, alright? No need to feel bad about it." Because seriously at least now she had something to do. "Uh, would you mind telling me where are we going?"
"Alright, I won't, promise." Sam was still getting her something, no doubt about it now. He had no idea what she even liked, but he'd worry about that later. Waiting for her to put her coat on, explained things briefly. "To Stonewall, not too far from here. Something weird's goin' on out there, magical maybe. A bunch of the kids are out there, and we need your help. But for right now, to both borrow a catchphrase and to answer your question..." Sam smirked and pulled down his goggles, then stood behind Nico, holding her carefully but firmly. "Up, up, and away!"
With that he blasted off, Nico in tow, making a beeline for Stonewall to see just what the hell was going on over there.
"Something magical maybe on Stonewall? Figures, we can't gather anywhere without something going terribly wrong." Nico had no time to complain or even realize what was going on until Sam had his hands on her. She only managed to register that he at least was a gentleman a second to late.
"Wait what you mean with awaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah dammit!"
Sam and Nico arrive at Stonewall and Amara fills them in. And Nico saves the day!
After speaking to Sam, Amara had been keeping an eye on the party-goers. There had been an interesting encounter with cowboy!Wade, but she was relatively sure that everyone was safe and unlikely to cause too much trouble. She eyed Kurt in his tuxedo, at least hoping that was the case.
It was with much relief that she saw Sam and Nico arrive, and she hurried over to them, the petticoats under her blue dress rustling as she did.
"I'm so glad you're here!" She said with a warm smile. "Thank you so much for coming." The last comment was directed at Nico. "I tried to contact Amanda, but I think she's out of town for work. But I thought you might be able to help us, in any case."
"Don't mention it", answered Nico as she peeked around with interest. Her eyes went momentarily black, too, but soon returned to normal. "Yeah, this is certainly magic. It's all over the place though, most likely because all the affected running around. Finding the source and getting rid of it shouldn't be an issue though." All she hoped was that she didn't start acting weird after draining whatever was doing this.
Sam looked around, scratching his head in confusion. "So, uh, what the heck is goin' on again, exactly?" He still wasn't sure what it was that had happened, let alone whether it was magic or whatever doing it, but whatever it was doing was as weird as heck. "And any idea where this source could be?" He was probably getting ahead of himself since they'd only just gotten there but it was a very confusing situation.
"From what I can tell, most people seem to be acting like the costumes they are wearing." She gestured to Yvette, who had been uncharacteristically swanning around and was currently singing a Lady Gaga song.
"Is the source likely to be something we can help you look for?" The question was directed at Nico.
Nico winced a little at the sight of Yvette telling the world they could make a bad romance, and then turned towards Amara. "Eh, it's not that complicated, but if you can't feel magic...well, you can tell me if all of them have been around the same place, perhaps? Touched the same thing, drank from the same drink...or find me stuff that everyone has been in contact with. It has to be close anyway."
"Oh, hrmmm. I know I've been eating and drinking, so I'm not sure it could be that. There's the corn maze I haven't been near, and the hayride... I could see if can find Layla, she hasn't been affected either. And I could see if we have either of those in common, or if it might be something else." Amara looked thoughtful.
Nico nodded as she gave another look at the place...and the people. If it was stuck into someone it would be a lot more difficult to spot. "Sounds like a plan. I'll just...walk around to see if I can spot the source, and I'll let you know if something stands out?"
Amara nodded in response. "Sounds like a good plan to me." She smiled a little. "Or I suppose, at least the best plan we have." She glanced over to Sam. "Shall we?"
"We shall." Sam waved for the ladies to walk ahead of him. They had no other plan for the moment so it'd have to do. It made him feel a little restless, since there was nothing he could really do but, well. He did fly them there pretty fast, that was something, right?
And Nico started to wander letting the flow of magical energy guide her as she expertly avoided the rest of those influenced. No time to make fun of them, sadly. As she grew closer to the hayride, though, Nico's pace started to pick up and she wandered less until she was inspecting the thing exclusively. "Yeah...I bet all of them got up in this thing. But where could it-- aha!" With a triumphant laugh, Nico got a hold of the charm someone had hung on the train; it somehow reminded her of Amanda's energy, but she gave it no thought at the
moment, and eyes going completely black, she drew all the energy from it, causing the charm to crack and fall into pieces.
"There, they should start feeling less weird and a lot sillier in a minute or so."
