Jennifer and Warren go out for drinks and discuss a new partnership.
Warren had called Jennifer to invite her out for drinks - he hadn't specified why, just that he wanted to talk to her about something. He'd been cheerfully mute on the subject of conversation, leaving it to be a surprise for her when she showed up. The bar he'd given her the address for was a fairly nice, but quiet place, where the bartender didn't blink when Jennifer arrived, instead just indicating the booth where Warren was already seated.
Jennifer grinned at the bartender, pleased by his quiet acceptance, before making her way over to the booth.
"So what's the big mystery, flyboy?"
"Hey yourself," Warren replied with faux indigence. "Not even going to order a drink before we get down to business?"
"Well, we could", she said airily. "But you were just too intriguing on the phone, I can hardly wait."
"So impatient." Warren grinned, before sliding the drinks list to her and waving the bartender over.
"Always." She grinned back and started to scan the menu. "Would it be too tacky to order a green cocktail?"
"I won't tell anyone if you don't." He winked at her just before the bartender appeared. He ordered something fruity and gin based before looking to Jennifer for her order.
"An After Eight", she told the bartender, tapping the place on the menu. "And don't worry, Warren, I won't tell anyone you had a girl drink either."
"Everyone knows I like girly drinks," he replied with a grin. "I'm secure enough in my masculinity to drink whatever I like."
That got an approving and ever so slightly wicked grin back. "Good to hear."
Warren just winked in reply.
"So now that we have drinks on the way - how would you like to quit your job?"
Jennifer blinked at him. "...are you making me an offer?"
"Absolutely." He grinned. "I'll be cleared to practice soon enough. I've been thinking about setting up shop in District X, picking up where I left off in California. And I'm pretty sure you'd get far more interesting cases working with me than at Legal Aid."
"They never let me out of the office", she lamented. "If you promise you will, I'm sold."
Warren laughed. "Are you kidding me? I'll make you do all the court appearances I can." The waitress brought over their drinks, Warren flashing her a smile before she walked away.
"There is one thing - and keep in mind that I'd like you on board as a full partner, not just working for me." He had turned serious at this point. "I have commitments elsewhere that I can't give up. And they mean that I might have to disappear at the drop of a hat, or will be away for chunks of time. Not big chunks - a couple of days here and there. Which means stuff I have on my plate may end up falling to you. I'll try and schedule around things as best I can, but sometimes I won't be able to." Warren couldn't exactly come out and say 'I'm a secret mutant superhero', but he needed to at least give her a head's up about it.
"Court appearances and partnership? Be still, my beating heart", she said, laughing, then considered the rest more seriously. "I think I can safely say the firm, when it's up and running, would be my main commitment. So I'll be there, providing we've got juniors to hand lesser things off to."
"I think we can arrange that," Warren grinned. "Well, once we find some. I have a friend who has almost finished law school who would definitely be interested in joining us." He raised his glass to Jennifer. "To the beginning of a beautiful partnership?"
"Most definitely." She beamed and clinked her glass against his.
