At the hospital, the X-Men and Clarice take down a no longer unconscious Mulwray without setting the hospital on fire. Clarice begins to rethink her status with the X-Men.

Clarice tried not to pace as she waited for the X-Men to arrive. She had no idea when they were getting there or who was arriving, though she assumed Garrison was one of them since he was the X-Man she had spoken with earlier. Still though, she worried. She did not want Mulwray to wake up and go batshit before they got there, nor did she want to shirk her own duties (though they consisted mainly of holding things and standing quietly out of the way) and draw attention to herself that way. The sooner they arrived, the better.

For their part, Kane was taking advantage of his badge by parking his car quietly and illegally at the back of the hospital. While it wasn't actual police business yet, it was better to get them into the hospital without anyone noticing. Jean's powers could help keep them unnoticed, but the less people required for that method, the better. He waved them out of the car and checked the rear door; unlocked, like he suspected. They'd raided the medlab before leaving, dropping loose scrubs over top of their leathers. It wouldn't withstand close scrutiny, but would let them pass for staff from a distance.

"You got a line on Blink?" He said as Jean passed him.

"She's close," Jean said as she casually walked past a few orderlies and gave them a smile. The trick was to not draw attention. Looking nervous was definitely one way to draw said attention.

"And apprehensive. A little scared too. This way," she said, nodding toward the signs that pointed them toward the ER from the back of the building. Where they'd entered was mostly for staff, etc. Not really for patients and families to be wandering about.

Clarice wasn't the only one who was feeling apprehensive, though Jean wouldn't be able to tell behind Jean-Phillipe's natural shielding. With the amount of sensitive electrical equipment in the average hospital, and how it tended to be vital to the well-being of patients, the Frenchman's 'grip' on his powers was much tighter than usual, as he strove to keep even the occasional spark that tended to happen in his presence around the mansion from happening. The only outward sign of his concentration was the tightness of his face as he followed along behind Garrison and Jean.

It wasn't more than a couple of twists and turns through the hospital's maze like interior before they caught sight of Clarice. There were no outward signs of panic involved, so whatever she was afraid was going to happen obviously hadn't yet. They huddled near the door, talking quietly. "What's the situation, Clarice?"

"Remember Brennan Mulwray from Hazelton Prison?" she asked, voice low as she led them into an empty exam room and drawing the curtain. "Part of Magnetic North?" At Garrison's nod she continued, "He just got admitted here. Unconscious. I told hospital security who pretty much just laughed in my face. And as much as I'd love to kidnap a patient and drop him on SHEILD's doorstep all gift wrapped for Christmas..."

"Which will mean I probably won't be able to do much telepathically except get a headache," Jean said, letting out a breath.

"Did anyone mention why he was unconscious? Was he given a sedative?"

If so they didn't know how long it would be when it might wear off, an hour or a minute.

"I don't know anything, really," she shrugged. The only reason they let her observe was because she was a licensed EMT. "He came in unconscious. He's not critical..." Clarice wished she knew more, "That's why I've been about climbing the walls for you guys to get here. I can handle it, but not the way they want," that is, without a). killing him or b). moving him elsewhere and then having to retrieve him.

An alarm sounded and Clarice looked up, even though there was nothing to see, "Come on!" she ordered, heading down the hallway quickly in her scrubs and clogs.

Mulwray was conscious and looking angry, a nurses aide in his arms, a scalpel at her neck. Even considering that their cases were plastic, the blades were still metal and he was still an electrokinetic. Bloody hell.

An electrokinetic who preached the gospel of Magneto. It was like looking in a dark mirror of 'might have been' for Jean-Phillipe. He recognized the desperate look on Mulwray's face. He'd worn a similar one himself at times. At least it wasn't one of the Brotherhood, given his turncoat status.

He moved to one side, giving both Garrison and Jean room to fan out, and kept an eye on Garrison for signals.

Well, hell. One look around the ER confirmed hundreds of potential disasters if he cut loose with his powers. Chances where he'd burn the whole hospital down.

"Brennan. How's it going, man?" Kane said, attracting the man's attention as he motioned the other X-Men to flank him. "Miss, you alright?"

The nurse made a whimpering sound that was neither an affirmative nor negation. It was hard to nod with a sharp scalpel right there. Clarice was scared to try to remove the scalpel, she wasn't sure if she would take part of Mulwray with it or worse, part of the nurse. Even if she did, that didn't help the powers part.

"What the fuck?" Mulwray muttered, staring around wildly. "Stay back!" he added, perhaps unnecessarily. "I'll kill her!"

"We know you will, Brennan. Everyone knows to take you seriously." Kane said, his tone serious. It was part of the basic psychology of hostage negotiation; to make the hostage taker feel in charge. People who felt weak had a tendency to panic, or worse, to do something to make you take them seriously. "You got hurt and were brought into the hospital here. Doc, how's he doing? Anything major wrong with him?"

Jean's attention settled on Mulwray and she spoke directly to him. "It's hard to tell without looking at you more closely but from judging from your head wound, sluggish movements, and your previously prolonged period of unconsciousness you probably have a head injury," she said calmly and gently, not making any sudden motions. She didn't want to frighten him into doing something rash--to anyone, including himself.

"I can't tell how severe it is without taking a better look at you and I can't do that unless you let me get closer. Do you feel nauseated? Do you have blurred vision? Does your head hurt?" In the movies it was normal for someone who got hit in the head to be knocked unconscious. In the real world, that was bad. Lack of consciousness was generally not a good sign.

"Don't come any closer!" Mulwray yelled, looking around wildly. A couple of security guards were trying to get through and Clarice shook her head at them. The same duo who had ignored her warnings earlier. Figured. Well, they better not ignore all this now and let them handle it, they were infinitely more equipped.

"Let her go, Brennan," Clarice suggested, "I'll take her place, okay? She's innocent. Don't hurt her. You can have me instead."

It was a good idea on Clarice's part. Especially if Jean-Phillipe could manage to snatch a brief moment where Mulwray was touching neither Clarice nor his current hostage. The man's first reaction would almost certainly be to use his powers, and Jean-Phillipe had the edge because he knew they wouldn't affect him. Still, better if this could be settled without any violence at all, and so he kept an eye on Garrison, hoping that the Canadian's negotiation techniques would carry the day.

"It's a good deal, Brennan." Garrison said, watching his eyes dart from a number of people. The panic and the indecision where coming to a head, and his tactical chip caught the slightest shift in Mulwray's grip on the woman. Kane's preternatural abilities were occasionally forgotten about, especially in the light to his lack of an obvious physical mutation. But when the Canadian moved, it was so fast that he blurred to the others. His hands shot out and pulled the woman clear of Mulwray and behind himself.

~Jean!~ He called out telepathically, hoping that she was ready to follow up on his move.

First Do No Harm. That was the first rule taught in medical school. The problem was it often conflicted with what was often required for Jean in her duties as an X-Man. Brennan Mulwray had a head injury, with the potential to be severe. To render him unconscious with that head injury could risk the possibility of putting him in a coma or killing him. But his abilities threatened many lives so there was no choice.

Jean telekinetically yanked Mulwray back, closer to where Jean-Phillippe had better access. Her eyes flickered up to Clarice and gave her a wordless nod.

Jean-Phillipe sprang into motion, ready to act when the others did, and he lunged around the hostage to grab at Mulwray. His first instinct was to punch and beat the other man into submission, but he remembered Jean's concern about a possible head injury, so instead he slithered around behind the other electrokinetic, pulling one arm tight around his windpipe and veins, and bracing the other in a classic sleeper hold.

Against policy, Clarice grabbed a vial of sedative and filled a syringe, jabbing it into his thigh so that Mulwray would be knocked unconscious. She'd deal with the potential ramifications of it all later if she had to, but getting him sedated so that he was not a threat was a priority right now. Otherwise, his powers could wreck havoc on the entire hospital. That there was even access to sedatives right then was a stroke of chance, things like that were not kept out for easy access by patients.

Mulwray went slack almost immediately and Clarice let out a silent breath she hadn't realized she had been holding. Good. She hadn't wanted to teleport him somewhere, or worse...teleport part of him somewhere. "Awww. He looks so sweet asleep. Too bad he's a raging lunatic," she commented.

"Women are always so picky." Kane commented, as he hoisted Mulwray up into a bed and quickly secured the restraints on him. The hospital security had their hands full trying to calm down panicking ER patients, making it the perfect time to slip away. He pulled out his phone and quick dialed the field office. "Brand. You want an easy collar? There's a member of Magnetic North sedated in the ER at Lenox Hill Hospital. If you get down here in fifteen minutes, you and the site security can get a nice, shiny gold star." He hung up just as she was commenting about playing doctor and followed the others out of the ER, to disappear quietly back into the city.
