Dec. 6th, 2011 04:29 pmSam and Scott meet up at CoffeeQuake for a chat, and end up talking about familys, the blackbird and ... tight?
Scott walked through the door of CoffeeQuake as he removed his jacket and draped it over his arm, grateful for the warmth of the coffee shop after the biting winds outside. Pausing in the doorway he examined the room searching for Sam, who he had agreed to meet for a coffee in town.
Sam hadn't been there for long himself, but he'd been there long enough to find a table and to order a coffee for himself. He was seated at the table, just adding some cream and sugar to his mug, and he waved to Scott once he saw the other man enter the shop.
"Hey Scott, how's it going?"
"Sam!" Scott's face lit up into a grin. Walking over to the counter he ordered his coffee before turning to examine Sam. "You look good," he mentioned as he sat down at the table. "So how've you been keeping?"
"Thanks, so do you." He smiled back at his fellow X-Man, nodding him in greeting. "I've been doing well enough. Getting back into the routine took awhile but I think I'm getting the hang of it." Teaching English was getting easier the more time he put into it, and thanks to running Danger Room sessions he felt much more confident with his powers again. "How about you, settling back in alright? It's good to have you back."
Scott took a sip from his coffee cup, "I've been settling" he laughed. "After 2 years there's alot to catch up on, new faces and the absence of old ones. Alot of work to be catching up on, and the state of the blackbird, don't even get me started" he continued with a mock severe look on his face. "Whoever let it slide to the state it's in is going to get an earful when I cath up with them" unable to maintain a stern expressions Scott's face cracked into a smile.
"Things have changed around here, it's true. People too." Sam thought about Vanessa for a second or two, taking a sip of his own coffee as Scott continued. He chuckled at the mention of the Blackbird and his friend's oath of vengeance against whoever looked after it in his absence. "Hey, I was gone for a good chunk of time myself, y'better not be lookin' at me." He grinned, knowing Scott was mostly joking at any rate. "I bet Jean's glad that you're back, huh?"
"You were gone, but I thought I trained you better Sam. How could you let it continue like this after you got back?" Scott teased. He leant back in his chair and took a sip of his drink. "Jean, well she's definitely happy" he continued with a grin, "but I don't think she has quite gotten used to the fact that I'm not just visiting anymore." He looked questioningly at Sam, "How about you? any special someone in your life?"
"Yes sir. I'm sorry sir. It won't happen again, sir." Sam playfully bowed his head and looked into his coffee for a few seconds before looking back up and grinning. "She'll get used to it by and by, I reckon, both of you will in time." Looking back down into his coffee again, Sam swirled the mug a little with his wrist, making its caffeinated contents circle around the cup. "Naw, not for me. Not for right now, anyway." He shrugged, ceasing his motions and letting the liquid settle before taking another drink. "After Vanessa and everything that followed that I've just decided to let things happen as they may, y'know?" Sam wasn't looking for anything and if something was meant to happen it'd happen.
Scott looked at Sam sadly, "It'll happen Sam, just give it time. At least you've still got Paige and Jay to keep you company." Scott starred into his coffee for a second, "My family is scattered across the globe at the moment. How are Paige and Jay by the way? I haven't really seen either of them around.
"Oh yeah, it's ok, I'm not worried. Honest." He grinned at Scott as he spoke. Sam honestly wasn't looking for anything, though he'd be lying if he'd said having run into certain people hadn't made him think about other times a little bit. He was more than happy to move onto talking about family, even if he didn't have too much to add there. "It's tough, I know. Paige is doing alright, Jay too. He improved a lot, actually, which is why I came back myself."
"Hmm" Scott mused remembering Jay's past, "I'm glad he's doing better. He deserves it". Scott took a sip of coffee and looked around the cafe before turning his attention back to Sam. "So how does it feel to be a dusty old English teacher then? Have you started quoting Shakespere yet?
"Me too, it's been pretty rough on him." It was also rough on Sam and the rest of the family but he wasn't about to complain about that to Scott. He smiled at the question, nodding his head a little. "Maybe a bit while I'm teaching, but I try not to wax poetically when I'm outside of the classroom.
"And here I thought Jay was the artistic one in the family" Scott teased. "You know what, you should so do a school wide poetry reading." He grinned wickedly at the thought, "a special assembly, just you alone on the stage. What do you think? Should I go tell Charles you want to preform?".
"Let me guess - I should dress in authentic period garments too, like tights and feathery hats, right?" Sam chuckled at the thought but wasn't exactly going to go along with the idea. "Naw, that's the kind of thing we make the students do, isn't it?" As much as Sam relished being back and being useful again, that wasn't exactly what he'd had in mind.
"I hadn't thought of that," Scott examined Sam once more. "you know what they say, a good leader always leads by example. How can you expect them to embarrass themselves if you don't?" he asked.
"This is true, boss, maybe if I got you to join me, do a duet or something like that, they'd love that." He grinned at Scott, teasing him back. "Heck, I reckon a lot of our fellow staff and squadmates would like to see that." Sam laughed and took another sip of his coffee.
"I'm sure I do a good enough job of that on my own, heh." He chuckled, though he did like the idea of a talent show just the same. "That's not a bad idea, actually. Something for the kids to show their creativity and whatnot, definitely. And of course, we'd have to be impartial, being judges and all." Sam nodded solemnly.
