Sarah And Meggan, Monday Afternoon
Dec. 12th, 2011 10:57 amMeggan and Sarah have a chat--Sarah grills her about what it feels like to like someone as more than a friend, and Meggan gets the partial answer as to the reason behind the questions.
While walking back to her room after grabbing a little snack in the kitchen, Sarah realized she hadn't talked to Meggan in awhile. She was walking right past her suite now, so she figured there was no time like the present. Maybe she could catch up with her friend if she was home and see how she was doing. She walked up to the door to Meggan's room, rapping lightly on the door and waiting for a reply.
Meggan wasn’t up to much right then. She was only pulling a book from her drawer, about to start reading a Musketeers novel by Alexandre Dumas, so she could watch an adaptation sometime and know what was going on, and what had been altered. The knock came at the perfect moment, before she had actually settled down, or opened the novel. She placed the book back where she’d taken it from, and hurried over to open the door. She didn't want to keep whoever it might be waiting. “Oh, hi, Sarah," she smiled. "How are you doing?”
Sarah returned the smile when Meggan opened the door. "Hi Meggan, I'm ok, how are you? I was just walking past your room and thought that I'd pop by and see how you were doing." Then she realized maybe her friend might have been in the middle of something. "I hope I'm not interrupting you or anything though."
“No, no, you’re not interrupting,” Meggan was quick to reassure her. Reading could wait—it wasn’t like she had been so entrenched in a story that she couldn’t look away from the text, after all. She hadn’t even touched more than the cover, and that wasn’t an interruption. “There’s nothing really big I’m doing, it’s completely fine.” She hadn’t answered Sarah’s question first question! “And I’m fine," she added. "You can come in, if you want.” They hadn’t really had much of a chance to talk alone since the showing off of costumes and finding keys.
"Oh, ok, good!" Sarah smiled, brushing back a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "Glad to hear it! And ok, sure." She entered Meggan's room, turning around to face her friend once she was inside. "So, what's all the news with you? It's been too long since we've had a chance to catch up." Hallowe'en really had been the last time they'd chatted, other than seeing each other around the school and saying hello in passing.
“There’s one teensy bit of big—at least for me—but there’s not really a whole lot for news outside of that,” Meggan admitted with an apologetic shrug. There needed to be more small. The whole costume incident was known since Sarah was there, too, and so wasn’t something that counted as news. “I’m dating Korvus? That's really all there is,” she said with a small smile.
"'That's really all there is' she says, as if that's nothing." Sarah grinned, teasing Meggan a little bit. "That's not little news, Meggan, that's big news! And I'm so very happy for you!" She was very happy for her friend, Korvus seemed like a very nice guy from the little she really knew about him, and she knew how awesome Meggan was, so it was a great thing to her. "I think you guys make a cute couple, uh-huh." Sitting down on the side of Meggan's bed, which hopefully was ok, she nodded as she spoke.
“I knew it was big for me, but I wasn’t sure if it counted as big big news anywhere other than my head,” Meggan laughed. “Thank you.” She plopped down beside Sarah once she was comfortable. It was completely fine for her to be seated on Meggan’s bed—it was softer than leaning on a wall, after all.
Sarah slipped out of her shoes and pulled her legs up, sitting cross legged on Meggan's bed, and turned to face her friend. "It totally is, Meggan. I can't imagine what it must be like to be dating someone, oh my gosh, that's so great!" She gave Meggan a big smile, happy to hear her friend was so happy and so glad for her. "What's it like? I mean, I'm not looking for intimate details here or anything, just, you know, in general?" She blushed a little as she quickly clarified what she meant.
“There’s not a lot of details to give, it’s so new. No intimate stuff yet,” Meggan teased. She would tell everything she could think of, if Sarah desperately wanted to know. “It’s nice—he’s nice. I like it. It’s new, neither of us has really dated before, so…slow speed for now, watching movies together—that dance at the college was a first date,” she explained. Going faster might mean messing something up, and she didn’t want that. “We’re carefully testing the water, I guess you could call it—learning about each other.” She had almost said training wheels were on, but that wasn’t even close to the right comparison, and would have made it sound awful.
Listening with rapt attention, Sarah nodded as Meggan spoke, grinning at the teasing. She awww'd a lot as her friend spoke about how nice he was, how they had never dated, were taking it slow, watching movies. Watching movies was something she and Layla enjoyed, which she made a mental note of, because huh. "Oh, the dance, that's awesome! Such a perfect idea for a first date." she chimed in. She continued to nod as her friend spoke. "That is fantastic, Meggan. That sounds like the best way to do it, taking your time, getting to know each other."
“We didn’t know we were going to keep it up until later, so the dance is an official first date after the fact,” Meggan pointed out. “Even if it was already a date.” Confusing details, but still worth noting. Wryly, she commented, “Temple of Doom’s not the best Thanksgiving date movie ever, what with the heart tearing and the screaming and scary meals.” Eyeball soup. That had been nasty, and she had covered her eyes for portions. Bad India depiction—bad! “But the last one makes up for it—or the third one, there’s another last one right?” She nodded at Sarah’s last comment, glad to have that confirmed. But they'd only been talking about her this whole time. "What about you, Sarah? Any news, big or tiny?"
"Me? Nah, not really. Certainly no dating or things like that, nope." Thinking about it, she realized maybe this was a chance to get someone else's opinion about such things, however. "But, um. Just out of curiosity, when you and Korvus knew... you know, that you liked each other. Like like. How did that feel?" Not an easy question and probably subjective but it couldn't hurt to ask, right?
“When I knew that I like liked him with a side of dating, other than just liking?” That really and truly was a tough one to answer, but Meggan was trying to come up with something. Sarah had to have asked for a reason “Slightly confused for a minute—while we tried to straighten it out, and because it’s all brand new and shiny.” She paused, adding with a tiny, amused scrunch of her nose, “Partly because the definition of casually dating is bigger than either of us knew until he looked it up, and we needed to talk. We both meant slow,” she quickly explained. At least they had figured that one out, and neither had panicked in a massive misunderstanding. “Happy. Excited, combined with the happy. I…don’t know what else to say. Does it help?”
"Yeah, it's... it's a weird question, I know." One to which she'd love to know the answer but it might not have been that simple. Sarah listened intently as Meggan replied, squinting and taking in every word. "Confused, ok, that makes sense." She nodded, been there, done that. Maybe it didn't mean liking in her case though. Smiling as Meggan explained about the mutual confusion, and glad they worked it out. Happy made sense too, that was what it was all about after all, wasn't it? That too was a familiar sensation. "It does, yes. But... was it ever anything like having butterflies in your stomach, kind of? Not always but, you know, sometimes?" All of that was sounding a little familiar, kinda.
“It’s not too weird.” Meggan tilted her head back in thought, before nodding. “I call that feeling Butterfly Pretzels. Stomach twisting? Nerves, massive cascading of fluttery nerves? I think so, sort of.” That was mostly at the dance, when she didn’t know what to expect—and when they were trying to figure things out. Still, it had made an appearance, she couldn’t deny it. Were there different levels of it? Off a hunch, she asked curiously, "You've had the feeling before? In the past, I mean."
"I like that name, Meggan, that's a good name for it." It definitely was an apt description of what her stomach sometimes felt, at any rate. Around Layla sometimes. Well, a lot of the time. Sarah bit her lip, having already answered Meggan's question inadvertently in agreeing with her description of the feeling. "I think so, yeah. Something like it, anyway, and I'm just wondering what it means, I guess." All signs were pointing to it meaning something pretty significant, or so it seemed anyway.
“It could just be all around general anxiousness…or something like crushing? A crush on somebody,” Meggan suggested. She didn’t have enough experience with this sort of thing, so she was just winging it, and waiting to find out if she had hit the mark and helped Sarah figure things out. She wasn’t the best when it came to identifying something like crushes with her empathy. There was also always the possibility that it was too new to identify with certainty, if her friend had been feeling whatever it was while Meggan was around. “I'll try not to ask anything until you’re sure. No snooping,” she promised with a grin.
"Anxiousness, yeah, hmm. Or... or crushing." Sarah definitely felt anxious around Layla but not in a bad way, or so she thought. Did that mean it was crushing then? She had little to no experience in these matters either and was soaking up every bit of advice and information that she could from Meggan. "Thanks Meggan, I really appreciate it. And it wouldn't be snooping, no more than me asking about you and Korvus is, I don't think. I just don't know, I guess, is all." Smiling wryly at her friend, Sarah sort of shrugged her shoulders, not sure how else to put it. "But when I do figure things out you'll be the first to know. Well. Maybe the second."
“Since you’ll be the first,” Meggan agreed. Which was obvious. “Or maybe this other person, whoever it is, could be the second. I’m okay with third place, if it’s them before me!” It would be natural, for it to be…whoever in the mansion it was that knew second. While her interest was piqued as to who the crush could be, she still knew it wouldn’t be right to pester Sarah with questions until the other girl knew for sure.
"Oh yeah, me too, so maybe third. But still super important obviously!" Sarah smiled at Meggan, nodding her head to confirm that fact. "It's just a little confusing, this whole lo- like thing. Liking people, or potentially liking them." She looked back down at her hand for a second, her smile slipping a bit as she picked at a bit of the blanket on Meggan's bed. "But hey, in the meantime, I'll just live vicariously through you, yeah?" Her smile grew again and she looked back up at her friend. "And we'll have to get together to talk more, about this kind of thing and other stuff too, of course!"
“It’s a deal,” Meggan replied with a smile. “And you can be going as vicariously through me as you think you need to be, for as long as it takes to figure stuff out, too. I won’t mind it.” She had to agree, it could be more than little confusing.
"Excellent! I think I'll do just that, then." Sarah grinned, glad they'd talked about that. "Thanks Meggan, that means a lot." It was always nice to have someone to talk to about things after all.
While walking back to her room after grabbing a little snack in the kitchen, Sarah realized she hadn't talked to Meggan in awhile.
