Kyle and Lorna: Dinner Time
Jan. 9th, 2012 06:43 pmKyle head to the kitchen and see Lorna doing what she does best, cooking. They talk about shoes, food, gossip and school.
Kyle knew Lorna was back, in a sort of detached he was still on vacation from school for another week or two way, where he hadn't seen her, but then he hadn't seen much of anyone. Finals and then holidays and general life had been caught up on. nonetheless, he still had to do paperwork, and the last of his background checks and interviews and getting various papers signed had had running around like a madman for a whole day. So the relief of not only getting back from a day of spending time waiting in lines, talking to people at desks and finally -finally- getting the whole "I can't even get tB!" thing sorted out.
Coming into the big common kitchen to see Lorna at a cutting board was huge. No more dealing with grouchy desk jockeys or school administration in District X, and the potential for really good food.
"Fooooood." He made grabby hands at the counter, and grinned at his favorite green-haired chef. "If that's gonna turn into food I can actually eat I will totally be your kitchen bitch for the rest of the day."
Lorna still felt like a stranger in the halls, though there was a lot of memories in them. Ones she hated, and ones she loved. It seemed that the only place she felt at home was the kitchen. She knew it would take some time to get used to the madhouse again, all she needed was some time. The kitchen was how she left it, organized and tidy.
Deciding that she would do some cooking to help pass the time, she started to get the ingredients together and placed them on the counter. Taking out the chicken, she placed it on the cutting board, and took out a butcher knife. Chop Chop! Lorna looked up from her chopping to see a familiar face.
"Deal." She winked at Kyle, and continued to chop up the chicken into nice sections to fit into the pan better. "I haven't talked, or seen, you in a while. How is life?."
"Not bad. Speeding rapidly towards being let loose on teenagers in a classroom for the first time." Kyle went over to the sink and carefully washed his hands, making sure to get any crud out from under his claws, and then picked up the potatoes and started to peel them. "Which you know, is terrifying. I'm totally sure the last time I checked I was still fifteen and technically on probation." Neat strips of potato skin landed in the sink as he peeled with his claws. "Right back atacha, by the way. How's stuff?"
"The first time is always nerve racking, but it is quite the experience. I am sure you'll do just fine." She started to arrange the chicken in the pan and went on to cut some lemons. "Things are going pretty good. I am back, which I missed you guys. My health and powers are stable, and I couldn't ask for anything else. The professor gave me a job as the official cook here and school nutritionist." She grinned as she squeezed the lemons onto the chicken. "What subject do you wish to instill on the student body?"
"I get four hours a day of English with a bunch of different grades over in District X." Kyle explained. "Last thing I need to do before I graduate all degree'd and stuff. Student teaching, yay, I get to explain why Chaucer was awesome while some other teacher watches so I don't call Herman Melville an assclown." His voice was slightly sarcastic, but even so, it was clear Kyle was pretty excited. "They're making me wear -shoes-, Lorna. You finally won that battle, I bought shoes that don't look like they came out of a dumpster." Okay, they were slip-on loafers, but they were shoes. He raised a half-peeled potato in a mock toast. "Here's to my claws not chewing up my shoes until at least summer, right?"
Lorna listened, it was obvious Kyle was exited about teaching. She snorted a laugh when Kyle said he had to wear shoes, she lifted up a squeezed lemon to go along with his mock toast. "It's only four hours out of the day, right? But now I know what to get you for Christmas and birthdays." She teased him with a smirk before she started to season the chicken and went to boil some water for the potatoes. "It feels good to be back."
"You sure you're not just saying it's good to be back so you can welcome people to the madhouse? Because people have been doing that all over the place while you were gone. All "stealing Lorna's line while she's gone' and everything." Kyle said with a grin, and went back to peeling potatoes. "And it'll be four, plus the commute into the city. Only reason I'm not gonna be stuck in some suburb school is cause Empire's letting me do my teaching in the city instead of in the county of my residence or whatever the thing said." That had been
months ago, he hadn't paid too much attention past being told yes, he'd probably do his student teaching inside District X's high school.
Lorna laughed, "People still think they are so original." She was joking of course. "At least they got it right. This will and forever be known as the madhouse." She put the chicken in the oven and set the timer. "Could always invest in some sandals, for traveling. A lot cheaper and no one will stare at people's feet." Lorna turned around and looked over at Kyle, while leaning against the counter, taking a short break.
"I've got those Tevas, but I can't wear 'em if I'm on the bike, and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to dress like you know, I have a degree in something if I'm teaching. I mean, if I teach here, sure, I can roll into the classroom in bare feet, Doc Hank does it all the time, but in a public school, I'm gonna be lucky if I'm not wearing a damn tie." God how he hated ties. Not wearing them, just tying them, his claws always got caught up. "Hey, the madhouse thing is a classic. We forget to say it, rocks are gonna fall from the sky or something."
Lorna listened, and gave him a smile. "You'll be fine. I know it. You'll be the best teacher they'll ever have." Deciding that he that what he needed was a boost of encouragement. Another smile reached her lips. "Classic? I suppose that it does sum up this whole place. But there is no place like home." She added. "I wouldn't be surprise if rocks do fall from the sky at a place like that. I would think it would be normal for odd stuff to happen." Seeing that the water was boiling, Lorna looked over at the potatoes. "How are they coming
along? The water is ready."
As an answer, Kyle scooped the already peeled potatoes into his hands, and dumped them into the pot, and then went back to peeling the last few. It went a lot faster with claws, so he was nearly done. "That or I'm gonna be that dude from that show with the kids who sing, and be like, that messed up teacher who forgets he's supposed to be an adult or something." He plopped a few more potatoes into the pot, and then slid the entire pile of peels into the container to go to the compost bin. "So, if I'm not being like a nosy mcnoserstien, powers all back to normal and everything, like you're back on the team?"
Lorna just watched him as he put the potatoes into the water. "Thank you. You are a great helper." Now it was the waiting period of letting things just cook. She laughed at Kyle's remarks of what kind of teacher he might turn into. Putting the cover on the pot after he put the rest of the potatoes, she turned around slowly when he asked her the question. Nodding to his question, "Yes. The old Lorna is back with a new flavor."
"I'm awesome, that's why you gave me a B+ in cooking way back when." That and enhanced senses made it hard for Kyle to screw up cooking unless he got distracted. He moved over to the sink to wash his hands before the starch from the potatoes made his skin crawl. It was gross, and usually got the hair on the backs of his hands all sticky. "Just admit it, you like running around in those big clunky boots." He said, grinning like he knew better, because he did.
"Yup." It seemed like forever ago that Lorna was a teacher here. She reminisced for a moment before snapping back to reality. "Clunky boots never fall out of fashion." She said it with such seriousness it was hard to tell if she was serious or if she was joking. Though she turned to check on the chicken with a grin on her face. The aroma of chicken started to fill the air. "Anything else you want with your food?" Lorna looked back at Kyle.
"Not to get funny looks when I put half a chicken leg in my mouth?" Kyle said, grinning. "Eh, you know me. I'm not picky as long as it's food I can eat. Oh, hey, uh, so there's gossip you might've, um missed." Man, why was he the guy always giving people crazy news. "So, that Remy guy, he married Miss Munroe. Crazy, right?"
She nodded and checked the potatoes. Turned towards Kyle when he said gossip, interested to say the least. "Oh yeah. That gossip. Yeah, I heard. Remy told me himself. It is pretty crazy, but as long as they are happy I suppose." Lorna didn't want to be a downer, she was truly happy for them, and it was her that broke up with him. Now if it was Alex on the other hand - she stopped thinking right there. "Want to get the plates out Kyle?"
"Gossip is way more fun when people aren't like, being unflappable." Kyle said, in response, easily getting out a pair of plates. "Where's the, okay, yeah, I watched way too many stupid reality tv shows while I was studying plate throwing?" He asked, grinning widely. "Lesee, what else did you miss. Scott's back, you probably know that, um... Terry's back too, and doing some FBI thing, and wow, I suck at this gossip thing."
Lorna laughed. "Plate throwing? Good thing these are durable." Taking out the chicken and placing it on the stove to cool off before transferring the fresh food onto the plates. "No, you are doing great. But thanks for filling me in." Looking around at the food and then going for the potatoes and started to work on those. "I'll just say that the mad house hasn't changed much." She smirked and went to work on the finishing touches of the side dishes. "Viola. Dinner is ready."
