Bishop gives Sooraya hands on instruction with various handguns.
Sooraya had been a little surprised at the request to meet her in the hall of the mansion, but far too glad that she had someone who would go over things with, she made sure to arrive there with time to spare. Under her arm was the folder she used to collect her information in and to be sure she had done a outfit that, though it wasn't sports clothing, could be trained.
When the clock chimed, she looked up to see a tall black man striding towards her.
"Perfectly on time." Bishop said, offering a short smile that looked a little out of place on his face. It certainly wasn't one of his usual expressions and it faded quickly. "Scott has prepared a scenario with a number of weapons for us to experiment with in the Danger Room."
She quickly fell into step with him as they headed towards the lower areas of the mansion. “Thank you for will to do this with me. I also brought some of the things I have been looking at…” She said hesitantly, a little intimidated at the sight of the very large man.
Bishop held out his hand for what she was referencing. "Lets take a look."
She pulled out a large sheaf of papers, handing it over with a sign. “There are so many different kinds of guns… Which should I practice first? And I can’t quite visualize where I need to target from the drawings...”
After quickly flipping through a few of the pages, Bishop handed them back. "There are essentially two kinds of guns. We'll get to it. You'll do better hands on."
“I think so too… With this… I don’t even know where to really start…”
"Not as complex as you're going to make it." Though he spoke in short bursts, Bishop opened the door for Sooraya. He was apparently nice enough.
She looked at him with a little smile. Sooraya hoped it would be more clear after their time in the danger room. "Do you want to see a demonstration first?"
"Of your mutation. Sandstorm is what I was briefed on." Bishop said a little dismissively before clarifying. "I didn't grow up in the mansion. I'm still training on how to use my own abilities under Scott. I won't be able to give you guidance on yours. We'll stick with what you're comfortable with."
Sooraya looked a little taken back by that answer, but recovered quickly. “I meant what I have practicing so far on disabling guns…” She said, thinking back to her Speech lessons in Attilan. She remembered to stand up straight and to meet his eyes when she spoke to him.
The Danger Room was set up like a double lane range. Bishop moved toward the closest lane directly. "That won't be necessary. If I don't start at the beginning I might assume you know something you don't." He opened a long trunk that had an assortment of carefully organized and arranged firearms.
“Okay…” Sooraya simply shrugged, still not sure what to think of this strange taciturn man. Finally she just decided to follow the man idea’s and followed him over to the large trunk, looking over the weapon. “That is a lot of guns…” She commented quietly to herself…
"The tools of the trade for the common criminal." Bishop said as he withdrew a small revolver and opened the cylinder. "This is the most common revolver in the country. Twice as many are sold by the manufacturer than all of their other models combined."
Bishop offered the pistol to Sooraya. "It's the first one I am going to teach you how to fire."
Immediately she took a large step back, tensing up and holding up her hands as to protect herself. “I need to learn how to fire one of those? But I only want to learn how they work… Not how to use one and to hurt other people… That is why I want to learn to disable to things.” She protested fiercely.
"When you watch movies, do you ever watch any with violence?" Bishop asked, clearly preparing to explain himself. This was different than the academy, for a number of reasons, and he wanted to be sensitive to that.
“Sometimes… I don’t particularly enjoy it, but don’t overly mind it either…” She answered cautiously, unsure of where he was going with this.
"What kind of movies?" Bishop set the revolver down, facing downrange, as he made his point.
“Uhm… Just normal movies I guess. Last week I a movie called 2012, but a few weeks earlier I watched Chronicles of Narnia. ”
"In the Chronicles of Narnia, don't the heroes know how to use swords? And because they know that, they know how to counter people with swords?" Bishop give the movie much attention but he remembered sword fights. "That's why I want you to know how to use one. Once you know what aiming is like and which parts are difficult and which are easy, you'll have a foundation for targeting weak points."
“In Chronicles of Narnia the hero’s know how to use swords… That is true. They use them as tools to defend others… I understand fighting is necessary sometimes… But I already have myself as a tool. Why do I need to learn another way to hurt people? Can’t I just look at them and learn?” The last sounded almost pleading.
"As much as watching someone else do something can teach you. You don't have to learn to use firearms but you aren't going to be as good at stopping them." Bishop told her, giving her choices directly.
Sooraya bit her lip, considering the choices. “I hurt someone rather badly while I had to defend myself in Attilan. I am scared I will have to do that again.” She hesitated for one moment more. “Could you demonstrate for me first, explain what I would have to?” Watching and listening for now seems safe.
Bishop took the open revolver and pulled five very odd looking rounds from the case. "These are essentially paint rounds, fired with gunpowder instead of air so the firearm still kicks." He loaded them for her to watch.
“Alright…” Sooraya watched, biting her lip. "I understand..."
Once it was loaded, Bishop aimed and fired three of the rounds at the paper target. They splattered into small paint marks. The rapport was not as loud as it was from a standard round. He kept his grip and the revolver pointed down range as he looked to Sooraya.
She flinched everything a shot was fired, but at the same time she managed to keep a careful eye on how he was standing and what the weapon did as he fired. She remained silent as he looked at her, her own eyes focused on the weapon in his hands. Finally she stepped forward and held out her hand hesitantly. “Can I… can I see it?”
Bishop slipped the revolver into her hand grip first, making sure it stayed pointed down range. "It has two rounds in it. This kind of revolver doesn't have a safety. Just pull the trigger when you're ready."
Pull the trigger? She had only intended to look at it! Hesitantly she brought the weapon closer, feeling the weight in her hand, though she was careful to keep it pointed the right way. Sooraya studied the weapon for a bit, saying nothing out loud, but a furious argument going on inside her head.
Finally she lifted the weapons and tried to take the stance she had seen Bishop use. Her finger slit into place on the trigger. Not even attempting to aim, she pulled the trigger, her eyes slamming shut the moment she performed the action…
Bishop waited as she fired and, once she squeezed off a shot with he eyes closed, he gently took the revolver from her and laid it down on the bench. "Had a bad experience with guns before, I'm guess." He had seen the look before.
Sooraya gratefully allowed him to take the revolver. “I have seen rifles used in Afghanistan. I have had one aimed at me once or twice.” She explained shortly, gratefully taking the somewhat easier way out then explaining exactly what had happened when she and Leyu had been attacked in their room.
"When I was a Detective I saw someone stabbed with a pencil once." Bishop unloaded the firearm, even though it was just one paint round left. "I don't think it's the weapon we should be so concerned with. It's the violence."
“Probably…” Sooraya replied hesitantly. “I don’t like using violence against people… but I understand it’s sometimes necessary to defend yourself and others… And I do want to be able to defend myself and others if needed… I just didn’t expect...” She gestured at the weapon in his hand. “Having to learn another way do… that. I want to learn to take them out so they can't do any more harm.”
"I'm not saying every time, or even most times, but you might have to accept that sometimes you're going to have to be violent to defend people." Bishop got the feel from her that one shot was enough and he began to lay out unloaded and opened weapons.
Sooraya was relieved when plans appeared to change and she watched curiously as he started pulling out weapons and opened them. She could recognize a few of them and their parts from her studies, but many more of them were totally unfamiliar. “There are so many different guns and rifles. That is what prompted me to seek out more help with this and email you.” She explained. “I did understand from my studies that there are a few basic types of something. But it was still confusing.” Her voice sounded a lot more relaxed now that more shooting was apparently not on the agenda anymore.
"It might be easier to see the side by side." When Bishop finished lying out a set, he moved to the second booth. They were all handguns.
Handguns were a little more familiar to Sooraya. “I did manage to figure out a little bit more about the differences between handguns.” She explained. “Weren’t there two different main types? Revolvers and…” She thought for a bit. “Semi-automatic handguns?”
"Correct. I have the revolvers on the left, automatics on the right." Bishop motioned with his hands to help indicate as he spoke before stepping back to let her look them over.
Sooraya knelt down next to the weapons to see them better. “Revolvers you have to load each bullet separately, while a semi-automatic works with a magazine.“ She looked at him to check if she had the facts straight. “And I am guessing from one being much easier to load then the other, that I have far more chance to encounter a semi-automatic then a revolver. Am I seeing this correctly?”
"Close but not exactly." Bishop dug out a quick loader and a moon clip for a revolver from the trunk. "There are some ways to load a revolver quickly, though they're less efficient than a magazine. Revolvers are also cheaper, more compact, and more reliable. You'll see them more often than you'd expect."
She watched the demonstration of how a revolver could be loaded quickly with interest. “I understand. Mr. Summers explained to me that I could clog the chamber of a rifle with my sand from. I can get when the shell is ejected, if I am quickly enough. If I understood thing from my studies, I could do a similar thing with a semi-automatic handgun. But I haven’t been able to figure out how to take out a revolver.”
Bishop picked up a revolver and seated the cylinder with a flick of his wrist. "There is one unique feature of revolvers that you might want to explore." He turned it so she could see the gap between the cylinder and the barrel. "A bullet fired from a revolver has to jump this gap in flight. A lot of excess gas and combustion vents from it as well, instead of from the slide in an automatic."
“Hmm…” Sooraya studied the weapon with interest, a lot more relaxed now that there was no more talk of firing the weapons herself, but only of exploring the weaknesses of a weapon. Her mind quickly considered several possibilities, but she came back to the same principle she had been using on the other weapons. “It is a place for me to get in and clog things up... If I clog things up there, would that stop a bullet and disable the gun? Though it would take some work to slip past the excess gas and combustion…” She mused out loud as she tried to pictures her actions.
"If you can get in the barrel before the bullet fires, the gas can vent through this harmlessly when you stop the bullet." Bishop offered as an example. "Then the bullet itself will plug the barrel for any additional shots."
Reaching out with one hand, she pulled the large file closer and dug out one of the drawings of the innards of a revolver. Glancing back and forth to the real weapon and the drawing, she could figure out what the former police officer was talking about. “I understand.” Sooraya quickly scribbled a few notes, before putting it aside. “Would you mind if I shifted and tried it out?”
"Would you like me to dry fire it while you do? Or do you just need a hand to hold it?" Bishop noticed she was shaken by firing it earlier and he didn't want to push her too hard too fast.
“Maybe you could just pretend you are aiming? It will give me the chance to ‘look’ for a moment. If I found my way, we can try dry firing or something.” Sooraya stood up and patiently waited till he got in position. She was still a little uneasy, but she pushed it away to focus on this. When he was ready, she quickly shifted and hovered before him as a cloud of sand, her clothes dropping to the ground.
Bishop pulled up a standard, single handed aiming position. He wanted to give her as much room to work as he could, at least initially. "Ready." He called out for her in a very rehearsed fashion. It was a remnant from his days on ESU teams.
At his signal, Sooraya slowly moved forward. When she had been training with Mr. Summers in the Danger Room, the man holding the gun had been a simulation. Because this time a real man was holding the gun and it was the first time figuring out a new weapon, she moved slowly. She surrounded the weapon and found the gap, forcing as much sand inside as possible to clog the weapon. It was different from the rifle she had been practicing with, but it the principles were the same and it worked fairly quickly.
With that conclusion, she flowed back and reformed inside her clothes. “I think that should work.” Sooraya said when she was done. “But it will take practice to do it quick enough to really work.”
"I suggest you get proficient with one type of weapon before moving on to another." Bishop wasn't familiar with training other people how to use their powers but, if he was teaching her how to shoot, that's the direction he would have given her.
“A good idea…” Sooraya nodded. “ Can I try this again? “
"As much as you want." Bishop offered helpfully as he raised the pistol again to take up a firing stance. "I have the day set aside so make sure you get as much out of this as you can."
