While Meggan’s stitches are healing, Nico offers to cast a spell that to make her waterproof for a time, so that she can swim safely.

It was a ridiculously warm day, so Meggan had chosen to make a bee line straight for the pool, and spend some of it down there. Even if she didn’t think a quick dip would do any harm to the healing of her stitches, she wasn’t going to take any chances. So for now, she was seated in the shallow end, occasionally paddling around with just enough levitation to keep her shoulders away from a stray splash. If one did get her there, she had a towel draped over a nearby chair. It hadn’t been as fun to just sit on the edge, and only have her legs in.

Once she remembered to ask and get the all clear, she decided, she was going to be diving straight for the deep end, and probably do some playing around with gills at the bottom. So long as she warned people with her old sign near the edge, and didn’t scare people again. Poolside drama was never fun for anyone involved. “Hi, Nico,” Meggan called out suddenly upon seeing the other girl close to the vicinity of the door.

Nico was wearing sandals, which was odd for her, considering her preference for boots and shoes in a more general sense...but it was hot and she didn't care much. This didn't play particularly well for her when she suddenly looked up...and hit her feet along the edges as she made her way to the pool.

"Ouch."

Looking down, Nico saw how one of her fingers had taken the worst of the impact, and was now bleeding. Perfect. Looking up again, she gave a small smile to Meggan. "Hey girl. What's up?"

Meggan winced sympathetically, having seen the bump but not the blood. “Sorry. Shouldn’t have shouted.” She shook her head, getting a little closer to the edge, so she could lean against it. “Not a lot. I needed some water, so half a swim. It’s better than no swim.” It was a far better way to cool down than sitting in a tree, even if she hadn’t completely submerged herself. There wasn’t enough of a breeze passing through the area for branch sitting, not today.

Nico limped dramatically towards Meggan, sitting on the edge as well, but keeping her feet away from the water. Nobody needed blood on the pool. "Diving would probably do something to those stitches...? I think?" She turned her attention to her feet when she realized that moving the little toe? Hurt. Not a lot, but dammit, it was still bleeding a little and everything.

“Yeah, diving wouldn’t be the best idea ever. Not for a little while longer,” Meggan confirmed. “So it’s stick to the shallow end—or levitating upside down, just enough for my head and neck to be under the water, but not my shoulder,” she said with a laugh. She had put some thought into this. Legs waving about in the air while she kept herself just far enough under to use gills, but not messing with her shoulder would be one of the strangest pool stunts she had ever considered attempting. It was much easier just to float a bit where she was, no contorting herself was required for that. “Is your foot okay?”

Nico's face was the poster child for a 'WFT!?' Internet funny pic as she imagined Meggan happily moving all over the pool, upside down and legs waving around. For someone very much affected by lack of oxygen, it looked like a good way to kill yourself. Still, Meggan was Meggan, so she didn't think the girl had a death wish.

"Meh, it's still there, but I might need a band aid. But now that I think about it...When blood is shed, let the Staff of One emerge." She wasn't entirely sure of why she did it, but out came the Staff, cold and imposing as always. Nico admired- yes, she couldn't help but admire the thing- for a moment before setting it next to her, and then back at the water. "I'll survive."

At Nico’s look, Meggan swiftly clarified with a grin. “I’d be okay doing that—if I’m making gills, I can be under an hour or so. Might look funny, and I don’t know about all the blood rushing to my head if I’m not all the way in would mess with it. I'd probably just tip over a few times.” It might be fun to try someday, but today wasn’t the day for it.

Meggan shook her head. “I don’t have any band aids with me, I’m afraid, but if it gets really bad I do have a towel.” There was another on a table nearby, but she wasn’t sure how long it had been around, or if it had been used already by someone else. She pointed out where hers was, just in case Nico did end up needing it. From what she could tell from her spot, it wasn’t spurting or anything really horrible. Meggan watched the Staff come out worriedly, though, more than a little curious if it would get angry with nothing to do, just hanging out next to a pool.

"Not to mention you would scare the living sssss- ah, whatever." Was she cleared from cursing around Meggan? Nico wasn't sure, so she would avoid it for the time being. "And don't worry, it looks worse than it feels. The bleeding is mostly gone too." It just hurt and she supposed she would walk carefully for the rest of the day. Awesome.

Nico noticed how Meggan looked at the Staff of One. "Hey, you want to see some magic?"

After a moment's thought, Meggan nodded her confirmation. “Yes, please. What do you want to do?” Or was it the Staff that got first dibs on smaller things? There was no way accidental ghosts could be summoned this time, right? Not unless it was the Ghost of Used Chlorine Past for the pool—which probably wouldn’t even be noticed, since chlorine couldn’t do anything to make itself noticed, like speak.

Nico smiled a bit, wondering what she should do. She was saving her healing spell, so that was out of the question. "Hmm...I think that I could probably make a spell so that the water didn't stick to you. As in, making you waterproof, but you wouldn't get wet at all." A water repellent spell? Yeah, she could probably pull that one out.

“Sort of like a duck. I like that idea,” Meggan mused with a grin. She thought it sounded like fun spell. It meant she could go underwater for a little while, swim to her heart’s content how she wanted, without it bothering her stitches if the water wouldn’t touch her. “It wouldn’t be for always? Just temporarily for a swim? I wouldn’t want to be waterproof for showers.” Because that’s when she needed to be wet. She didn't want to be a Pigpen 2.0, with little dust clouds trailing behind her.

"Of course is temporary. I can't make permanent magic just yet." It would be very inconvenient to make someone waterproof for life. Could someone like that drink water, anyway? "I think it would wear off after an hour or so, or I can make it end before if you want, so no biggie. So, you in? I could use the practice for this kind of very detailed spell anyway."

“Oh, yes, definitely. I’m very much in,” Meggan eagerly agreed. Sometimes being a guinea pig could be fun, and this was quickly turning into one of those times. If it only lasted an hour, there was no need to worry. She was glad, since she had almost started coming up with other ways that it could be bad if it were permanent.

"Okay then." Standing up, Nico got a hold of the Staff of One and closed her eyes. The level of detail wasn't terribly big, but still, she wanted it work the way it should. Nico did a little circle with the Staff before muttering her incantation. "Waterproofing!" Short and simple, she thought as a bubble came out of the Staff and stuck to Meggan, taking her shape like a whole body suit before apparently disappearing.

"Okay then, that should be it. Give it a try?"

Meggan had expected a jolt or a feeling like there was something sticky glued to her, but she was pleasantly surprised to find that it didn’t feel any different. Maybe it would tingle when it was time for the spell to end. Right, testing it. She nodded, turning and diving straight for the bottom of the pool, before paddling in a circle. If she was going to test the spell’s juice, she might as well go all out, rather than hang out around the surface.

As she returned to the surface, she saw that it had gone just as Nico had promised her. “It works! My stitches aren’t wet. Even my hair’s still dry. I love this spell,” she reported ecstatically. Water just fell off moments before it could touch her, held back by the invisible bubble. She just knew she would be swimming for the rest of the day, so long as she didn’t get sore or exhausted.

Nico smiled smugly. That was her magic. Working, and not doing something horrendous for once; that was all she needed to feel accomplished. "Nice. Since it's a simple spell I suppose it will last for some hours, but don't overdo it okay? I guess I'll just throw myself somewhere and try not to end all red now."

“Got it! I promise I’ll be careful not to rip anything open,” Meggan vowed. She might be desperate for a swim while the weather was beautiful, but she would be cautious enough not to flail and mess with a stitch in the process. She would listen, as she wasn’t eager for any setbacks or extra soreness, she just wanted some pool fun while the spell was doing its thing.
