Sarah V. & Wade | Monday Afternoon
Apr. 2nd, 2012 03:41 pmSarah's off to take her road test so she can get her license - Wade goes along for moral support.
To say that Sarah was nervous was a slight understatement. No, more like a humongous one. It was true, she had studied as much as she could, done well enough with the written part of her exam, and had been doing well with her driving lessons with Wade, however the driving portion of the exam was still nervewracking. Her and Wade had just arrived at the DMV building, and the road test was going to start in a mere fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes! She suddenly started to wonder if she was actually ready for this. Maybe it could be postponed to a later date or something.
She looked over at Wade and tried to give her best, most confident looking smile, which he was almost guaranteed to see through. "So, yeah. I... yeah. Test time soon."
Wade gave Sarah an easy sort of smile and nodded. "Yup." He could tell she was nervous, practically jittering where she sat, but he had complete confidence in her ability to ace the practical part of her driver's test. "I'm pretty sure they'll let me sit in the back, so it'll be just like we practiced on all those bits and pieces of private property." He gave her a slightly significant look. "If anybody asks, you were totally driving a tractor, okay?" Then he grinned, eyes crinkling at the corners.
He'd already coached her on everything from stopping completely at stop signs to meticulously doing the speed limit - in the end, he was just glad parallel parking wasn't actually part of the test anymore.
"Oh, really?" That tidbit of good news definitely made her feel a little better about her situation. There might have been a slight tinge of panic over not wanting to let Wade down and feeling a bit of pressure because of that but overall having him there would make things a lot easier. Sarah smiled, rolling her eyes as she giggled a bit. "Ok, but we should match our stories up in case they test us. It was a... green John Deere, right?" Weren't they all green anyway or something? It wasn't important as she realized he was joking and was thankful for the bit of humour. "I just hope I don't hit anything is all. Or anyone."
"I'm pretty confident that you won't hit anything, gadget. You only bumped into that post the one time and there wasn't even any damage to the car - lesson learned. Just be careful about your stoplights. Slow your rolls, check your mirrors before changing lanes - oh. Look over your actual shoulder when you're backing up, don't just use the mirrors, right?" Reaching over, Wade ruffled Sarah's hair and grinned. "You'll do fine. Deep breaths. You are totally zen. And dude. I'm in the backseat, so I'll be like. Sending you my zen vibes. It'll be awesome. You'll rock this. And then I can make you my driver - I'll be like Miss Daisy!"
She grimaced a little at the mention of the post. It was just the one time and didn't cause any damage to the vehicle but it certainly did give Sarah a big fright. "Stoplights, slow, mirrors, over shoulder. Ok." She took some more deep breaths, starting to calm down a little bit. Wade was right, she could do this, she just had to concentrate and not freak out, the last part being particularly important. His last comments made her frown however. "Wait, like the moose?" The Miss Daisy reference was lost on Sarah, unfortunately.
Wade's face fell a little and he shook his head sadly. "The classics of the last century are lost on the youth of today..." Then he grinned again and shrugged. "It's an movie reference about this little old lady who has to be driven everywhere. There's some interesting stuff in there about class and race politics. It's called Driving Miss Daisy. No moose were harmed during the production of the film."
It was pretty much true, unfortunately. "Ahhh, ok, I see. Can't say that I've heard of that one but cool. I will gladly drive you around if I get my license, anywhere you want to go!" Sarah giggled at the no moose being harmed part, shaking her head a little, then she took a deep breath. "Alright. If I'm gonna make good on that promise it's time to kick some butt on that road test." She gripped the wheel tightly in her hands, giving Wade her best determined look.
Nodding easily, Wade smiled. "So let's head inside and let them know you're here. And after you've passed with flying colors, I say we find some oatmeal cookies sans raisins. Or cupcakes. Cupcakes would be awesome."
Sarah smiled at that. "I would like that very much. And I'll even volunteer to drive us around to get them, how about that?" Because she was going to do this, darn it! "Alright, let's go now before I lose my nerve. Thanks, Wade." She gave him a little grin and then got out of the car. It was now or never!
