During the protest, a blast goes off...

The protest was now a full throated roar, as the additional security stationing themselves by the doors of the embassy offered a target for the chants and slogans. It was still well controlled, and the police remained impassive as the volume grew, save for the odd motioning back of a protester, which mostly took no more than a warning. It looked like things were going to go without incident.

The blast tore through the noise, tearing apart the sounds of the crowd with a single, thunderous clap. Black smoke belched into the sky from the side of the Genoshan Embassy grounds, next to the far edge of the protest.

Sooraya jumped as the loud clap tore through the crowd. She hit the ground almost automatically, instincts from living years in Afghanistan where such attacks were not uncommon jumping to the forefront and covered her head with her arms.

As soon as the worst noise had dissipated, she uncovered her head and looked up, searching for her fellow students from Xavier’s that had been close by. Several people were lying around her and she scrambled up, moving to the closest of her fellows. “Layla, are you alright?”

"Yeah, yeah I'm fine." Layla shook her head to clear her hair out of the way. The force of whatever that was had shook the ground enough to knock a few people off balance and one of them had taken Layla down with them though she wasn't sure who it had been. "Yeah, I'm cool, are you okay? Where's everyone else?" She tore her eyes from the black smoke that was raising up to look around for everyone else.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" This time, Maddie wasn't going to wait to react. And she certainly wasn't going to run back toward the explosion. "Stupid fucking assholes with bombs."

Fred's reactions to the explosion were much less reactive than a lot of his fellows; he'd had a small amount of practice with loud noises. What alarmed him was the almost instant onset of chaos; having not hit the ground or been thrown there, Fred had a good vantage on Sooraya and Layla. After he motioned for them to get up and get close to him, Fred looked around for any of the other members of the Mansion Crew. He tried to bellow over the loud buzz, "HEY! EVERYONE! OVER HERE!" Hopefully, the others would recognize his voice...

Callie was doubled over in a coughing fit beside him. One hand remained firmly on Fred's arm, as the other pulled her shirt up over her nose and mouth to protect her from the black smoke. Her eyes stung, her chest hurt, but at least she was otherwise all right. Now to just get out to safety.

She needed to get to the injured, that was Laurie's first thought as she heard the noise of the bomb go off, and she immediately headed toward the source of the smoke she could now see billowing black clouds into the air. As she passed by people she reached out, touching those she could but otherwise allowing calming pheromones to leak off her skin and into the air. She could only hope that it would allow them to move out of danger faster, and help the police get these people to safety.

Korvus popped up over the crowd like a gopher, jumping high enough his feet were at what had been chest level so he could get a view of the situation. He saw Fred grouping people and Laurie heading toward the blast. He jumped a couple more times, calling out to Fred. "Toward the blast... Laurie's moving... we can help." He pointed as he spoke, breaking as he went back down into the crowd and out of sight each time.

Megan uncurled herself from where she was lying on the ground. She couldn't think for a moment and couldn't recognize anyone. She took a deep breath, shaking, trying to calm herself, then rose into the air.

As they grouped together, a second blast went off, this one louder than the first. All eyes were drawn to the same spot on the grounds, and only those in Xavier's designated area of the protest noticed the sudden electric blue haze that sprung up around them for an instant, and suddenly delivered them into oblivion. Where more than twenty people had stood, there was now only the echo of them as the sound poured in to fill their unnoticed disappearance.
