The team in the security office discovers that they're the ones in the trap.
On cue, the lights flickered and then died, the background electrical hum of the building's systems fading out. The electronic lock of the door in front of them shut down and with a small 'click', the door itself unlocked.
As one, they all froze, breathing quietly as they strained to hear anything in the next room. They couldn't afford to waste much time, though, and Wanda would not be able to check to see if the next room had any surprises - doing so would bring the hex rings into play and the last thing she wanted was to produce an unnatural light in a room that was supposed to be dark thanks to the power outage. Quietly she edged towards the door until her back was flat against the wall next to it.
After a mental count of three, Wanda placed her fingertips against the door and very gently pushed it open.
Inside the room, it was pitch black and silent. Wanda started to go forward, but was stopped by Remy hand and pulled back. He couldn't see any further than her, but when the power went out, there should have been shouts of surprise, people stumbling around the room. Instead, it was just nothing.
Trap.
Remy yanked Wanda back as he pulled the door back as a half dozen assault weapons opened up, slamming into the steel door.
"Light 'em up!" He yelled, backing off from the door, knowing that it wouldn't last more than a second. The first explosions from Jubilee's fireworks revealed more Magistrates swarming down the hallways leading to their position. A card took the first one in the throat, as charged.
Jubilee sent a net of fireworks into the room, sending them up high to illuminate the battle before sending another wave at the magistrates, exploding them close to eyes and ears, the better to sew confusion.
Chaos in the darkness, that's what this was, even before Wanda added herself into the mix. Turning in the opposite direction where where Remy had been and where Jubilee was throwing the fireworks, she leveled her hand and threw out a full out hex blast that coated everything nearby in a red wash. It missed one Magistrate by inches but caught another in the side who fell with a strangled scream as the first one it had missed reached for Wanda.
She ducked and dove to the side, hoping the dark would hide her.
Remy reached out, the flickers of light enough to guide his awareness, and he snapped the neck of a Magistrate with ease. His staff was out, and crushed the windpipe of the one behind him. A card split a man's knee, toppling him.
Jubilee was expert enough in her powers these days to direct the light toward the Magistrates, while leaving her own companions covered in the darkness, a multitude of small plasma sparks glowing around their enemies, getting in the way of the Magistrates attempts to fight with sharp stabs of pain when they got too close, or flickers at the edges of their vision in order to disorientate them. She'd leave the physical fight to Remy and Wanda for the moment, and concentrate on making it easier for them from a distance.
As Wanda rolled to her feet, she somehow managed to come up holding a knife that someone had dropped. She'd cut herself on it a little when she'd found it but not enough to do much damage. And it wasn't going to be staying in her hand much longer - the lines were blurring and turning faster and faster as more bodies added to the chaos but she knew now roughly where Remy and Jubilee were at so she was able to pivot on her heel and throw the knife as hard as she could in the opposite direction. She didn't have to see it to know it had found its mark as the line in her minds eye blinked out of existence.
But she was forced to turn and start fighting almost immediately again, the numbers were growing too much and the three of them were at such a disadvantage.
He cards brought down another man, but the sinking feeling was already settling in. Remy's powers told him where every Magistrate coming at them was at the moment, and it was clear they were outnumbered. The sheer press would bring them down, no matter how many they killed in the process. Gritting his teeth, Remy spun his staff in a tight arc, energizing it, and then threw it to the side of Wanda, knocking the Magistrates between her and the exit to the side.
"Wanda! Get out, now!" There were too many between him and Jubilee, but she had a window of opportunity.
It was Berlin all over again and just as they had to leave Remy behind, Wanda knew she had no choice but to do as he said and leave both Remy and Jubilee. It didn't make it hurt any less, though, as she turned and commanded the chaos filled hex rings to blast a giant hole in the nearest wall. It didn't sooth the guilt when the light from the now visible, free of soldiers hallway showed her how right Remy was; her two friends were swarmed and the only chance she had to come back for them was to run.
Wanda didn't have the chance to look back as she dove through the crumbling wall and took off running.
But even if she'd had the chance, she honestly didn't know if she would have.
