The fliers of the group are on distraction duty and it's going well, until...

Angel drew her hands together, firing off shots at the ground in an attempt to blow up the cement and impede the incoming ground troops. All around was chaos - but at least it was slightly organized chaos. Angel dodged in and out of a few blasts, shooting off another fireball. If nothing else, the job seemed to be getting done. She saw someone firing at her from a nearby balcony and shot up, taking aim at the wall right above the shooter's head and firing. So far so good.

Things had gotten far busier than Sam had anticipated but they were handling what was being thrown at them, and that was the main thing. He'd buzzed several groups of troops on the ground, causing them to scatter and flee, which was buying more time for the others. They should have things contained soon enough, he reckoned. "Keep it up ladies and gents."

Raising her hands up as she lifted several of the men into the air, via their weapons. Her attention was turned to a tank that was firing at the group. Dropping the floating weapons, she began to concentrate on the shell that was fired and turned it against the tank it self.

Warren had swooped up into the skies high above the group, scanning for any surprises on the horizon. Things were going well, at least for the moment. Almost too well.

Terry moved from spot to spot on the rooftop, never staying in one place too long as she screamed here and there to scatter forces. The building she was stationed on had taken a few hits itself, sending smoke wafting up and debris pattering down. The redhead waved her hand in front of her face to clear smoke away from her as she ducked behind a roof access building. With the sounds of arial combat muffled somewhat, she started to pick up a distant whump-whump sound. Listening hard, it took her a few seconds to identify it. "Choppers! I hear choppers coming in!" she shouted into her earpiece as she scrambled to her feet to scan the skies.

The shell hit the tank, One tank down Lorna thought. Taking aim at a few of the armor cars that were gathered near each other, she lifted one into the sky and had it slammed into the others before tossing it towards a group of men on the ground. Shifting her focus to the skies after Terry's warning about helicopters were approaching, Lorna flew high into the sky to get a visual on them. "Coming in from the East." Lorna said into her earpiece.

So much for that. Warren immediately began to scan the skies, looking for the choppers Terry had announced, swinging eastward at Lorna's pronouncement.

"Confirmed," he said over the radio. "I can make out three on the way, minimum."

Angel jerked around, trying to find the helicopters on the horizon. She followed the direction Lorna had indicated, squinting a bit and managing to make out the dots that she assumed were the choppers approaching. "No good," she muttered under her breath, holding her hands out; flames began dancing around her fingers.

That was going to make things more difficult, to say the least. "We've got more hostiles en route, do what you can but keep your options open, people." Retreating to regroup and rethink their approach might not be the worst idea if they started to get overwhelmed by the new arrivals. Sam turned to face the direction of the new targets to better assess the situation himself.

"Remember to pick me up on the way out o' town," Terry said, not willing to trust her escape to her own flight abilities. She coughed to clear her throat of the irritants stirred up by smoke and debris, then moved to the edge of the rooftop to scan the situation on the ground as well.

"Will do Siryn." Lorna said back to Terry. "There is still a tank functioning down below, we might be able to use their own weapon against the helicopters."

"On it, Polaris. I'll try and get their attention." Warren swooped immediately, heading in the direction of the currently firing tank. If he could draw it's attention... Angel flew a little higher, her eyes moving left and right as she took in the insanity. Choppers and still one tank on the ground, and people shooting at them, and some ways away she could see the other X-Men team, clearly overwhelmed. And they couldn't help. Retreating and living to see another day may not have been a bad option to have in the back pocket...

The thought was cut off by return fire, in the form of a bazooka fired from below. The missile streaked towards Angel, scoring a direct hit on her back and exploding.

There wasn't time for surprise. Or even a reaction at all, really. Angel didn't feel the heat from the explosion, of course - but she felt the pain. It was all consuming and there, overwhelming everything else; she was only vaguely aware of the fact that she was falling out of the sky - the very, very high up sky - at a very fast pace, and the idea of trying to right herself enough to at least slow her descent didn't occur to her through the haze of pain...

Angel was unconscious before she hit the ground.

Terry could see the same sight, the other team gradually losing ground to superior numbers and planning. The sight barely had time to register before she realized that one of the helicopters was breaking away from the others and heading in the direction of her position. "Think I've got company," she told the others. Terry inhaled hard and opened her mouth, but before she could focus enough to exhale, the machine directed a hail of bullets at the already unstable concrete under feet, and a section gave way, knocking her off her feet and dumping her to the next floor under a slide of rubble.

They were losing people quickly as things snowballed out of control. There was no way they could stand their ground against this, they needed to retreat and possibly regroup, but getting out of there was now the first and foremost priority. "Retreat, everybody, now!" There was a contingency plan in place and hopefully they would all meet back up there according to that plan. He kept an eye out for anyone nearby that needed assistance in getting free as he tried to make his way out of combat.

Lorna saw as Angel went down, "Firestar down!" Lifting her hands she took on of the armorer cars and side swiped the other cars to keep them away from where Angel had landed. Her next objective was helping Terry since she was closer. Flying closer but was cut off with a helicopter of her own, she flew up with the helicopter in hot pursuit.

It had all gone to hell in a handbasket more rapidly than Warren could really compute. He saw Angel drop in a blaze, and Terry go down under a blaze of bullets. The helicopter on Lorna's tail was getting closer than he would have liked, so he swung around, hoping to get the attention of the pilot so Lorna could do some damage.

"Polaris, I'm going to try and distract that pilot, you concentrate on getting the copter out of the sky."

Sam blasted through the tail section of another helicopter as he tried to carve out a path for him and his team in their attempt to escape. The smoke and wreckage of the chopper blinded him as he came through it on the other end and for a few seconds he couldn't see what was going on around him or where everyone was. Once he regained his senses he noticed John in the distance, separated from the rest of his group and with attackers closing in, so he instinctively swooped downward, bowling over some of them and scooping John up on the way.

"Roger that!" Lorna said as their plan unfolded. Looking behind her a small green ball of magnetic energy formed in her hand waiting for the right moment and she threw it down towards the metal machine.

"It's just us left up here, Polaris," Warren warned as he lost track of Sam's position. "We'll need to give the others some time to get themselves clear, and regroup, so let's keep up the distraction."
