In the skies, Warren, Pixie and Meggan discover things are getting worse.

As the first explosion tore through the area, Meggan instinctively hit the dirt, and covered her head. There wasn’t time to think, just act—and so she did, next crawling over to crouch behind the trunk of an old tree. It was the closest thing there was, she wasn’t sure how risky it would be to bolt for a building. She really hoped it was sturdy enough—for her, and anybody else nearby--for bullets if it was more soldiers with big guns coming up soon. Heart pounding, she wondered just where the explosion had come from, not daring to peek out just yet. How many more would there be?

Pixie flung herself to cover as the shock wave ripped through the air. She braced herself for a second one that never came. "Where did that come from?" she said quietly, wiping dirt out of her mouth. The moment passed. "If only we could see what was going on, how many there are..." Then what. She didn't know. But fleeing through these woods from an enemy they couldn't predict was pretty much akin to flying in the dark.

Warren snapped into movement as soon as he heard the explosions, his wings flaring out as he ducked for cover. A moment later he was moving again, catching sight of Meggan and overhearing Pixie's question. He moved in close to Meggan, glancing to the skies for a moment.

"We need as many eyes in the sky as possible. Meggan, you think you can keep an eye on things from a tree top? Pixie and I will need someone to watch our backs."

“Yes, I can do that,” Meggan immediately agreed. Just because she couldn’t fly up there herself right now, that didn’t mean she couldn’t get up there and watch for more threats. She could always scale up to the highest branch that was still firmly connected...while wishing for a pair of binoculars to look for danger that was further off in the distance.

Warren scooped up Meggan, maneuvering through the trees to deliver her safely into the branches of a sturdy looking tree. He flashed her a reassuring smile as he flew higher, clearing the canopy as he did. It was easy to fly up here, no likelihood of being caught on any of the branches. But he was also more vulnerable up here, so he would have to be on alert.

Pixie rose slowly to the canopy of the forest. Her wingspan was smaller compared to her flying teacher's, and she could move totally vertically. She glanced at Meggan and smiled, thinking of a koala the way the other girl climbed the tree. Brightly colored birds lifted off their branches and darted away. Pixie poked her head above the tree tops. She could hear a lot of rustling in the woods that wasn't coming from them, and the sounds of engines - but it was muffled by the trees and hard to tell where it was coming from. She thought she spotted flashes of movement below the canopy, too, and shivered. "I'll have to get a bit higher," she said boldly.

"Roger that Pixie. Just be careful, okay?" Warren stuck close to the tops of the trees, keeping a close eye on the glimpses of the girls, while simultaneously trying to keep an eye on the horizon. Kids their age shouldn't be in situations like this - fighting for their lives and freedom.

Meggan raised her head above the leaves once she’d reached the top, clinging to the thickest branch with one hand to keep her balance, while she leaned into the curve of the wood. “Helicopters,” she called over. Birds flew off screeching angrily, startled by her presence and loudness, as well as the explosion. It couldn’t be helped. “I see three so far, they’re coming up behind you!”

Pixie whirled around, wings clattering.

"Pixie, get down!" Warren yelled, swooping to distract the helicopters away from Pixie.

Seized with panic, Pixie dropped below the trees as bullets from the helicopters ripped through the air nearby. She scrabbled at a tree, heart pounding, then quickly regained control. She let go of the tree and began working her wings again, hovering safely below the tree tops.

"Well, we've seen them but now they've spotted us. What do we do?"

"We need to check in with the others - there's too many copters out there for us to take on. We need reinforcements." Warren moved below the tree lines, heading for where he'd left Meggan in the tree so he could get both of the girls out of the line of fire.

The bark beneath Meggan’s hands quivered, then, and she glanced down for an instant before she began to make her descent to a lower branch. She thought it was probably just something coming off from age or bugs, until she felt her ankles get tangled. She realized just how wrong she was about it just being bugs as the branches trapped her, binding around her to form a cage. She was trapped.
