Matt and Sue: Home Coming Dance
Oct. 21st, 2012 12:48 amMatt and Sue attend the homecoming dance, and between girls and punch a decision is made.
Sue looked nervously out of the window as the minibus pulled up outside the high school gym. Xavier's had held a dance earlier in the summer, but she'd known everyone there. As she looked at the crowd of chatting students Sue realized that she didn't know any of them. Still it was a chance for her to break out an evening gown and dress up the blonde thought with a smile as she smoothed down said dress and looked over at her date. "Shall we?" she asked happily.
"Absolutely," Matt agreed, offering her his arm. "I gotta be really blind, remember," he added unfolding his cane. He was wearing the khaki pants and a stripped rugby shirt that he had gotten on his shopping trip with Adrienne. As far as the high school was concerned he was blind and powers or not, he had to act like it. He still did in some ways, but not in others now that he had a better mastery of his powers.
"Don't worry," Sue replied as she exited the van and slipped her arm through Matt's, "I won't crash you into anything...well nothing too serious anyway," she added mischievously. Turning her head to grin at Matt she let her eyes flick over him for a second, the rugby shirt still had that new clothes feel to it. "Umm, I really like your shirt," she complimented hesitantly. this whole dating thing was still so new to her. She blushed and looked down at the ground, dating, when had she started thinking of them as dating. They'd been on one date and to two dances, did those count as dates? She had no idea, but she was going to just try to enjoy tonight Sue decided as she tightened her grip in Matt's arm and stepped closer to him.
"Hey, I totally know where the wall is. You try that and it's all fair game," Matt teased, "Maybe I'll run you into the wall. But, uh, thanks," he fingered the material a little, it was a pretty comfortable shirt, "It's new. Ms. Frost decided my wardrobe needed more variation or something," he was glad she liked it though. That was basically the point. "You gonna make me dance?" He had danced over the summer, somewhat.
"You could try, but you're supposed to be blind remember. How would a blind man know where the wall was?" Sue grinned back at him. "Well then Adrienne has excellent taste," the girl decided, "having some variety is always good at times like this. Well it would be nice to dance, besides how else are you going to show of the new clothes?"
"Shush you, do not try your girl-logic on me!" Matt replied, teasing her, "And anyways, I'll find the wall first, and then run you into it. It'll be epic. And I can always model my new clothes by standing against a wall with a cup of punch in hand. Or a brownie. I'm easy like that. Or maybe, if I get daring, sitting at a table or something," he would dance with her though, if she didn't mind him being absolutely horrible at it. He could handle the slow dances pretty well, though.
"A table? You wild man you." Sue countered with an easy grin, "It's a party, you're supposed to have fun, not hide in the back," she teased before turning to him with a evil glint in her eye. "So you're easy are you?" she asked totally ignoring the context of his statement.
"Oh, very," Matt agreed as they entered the gym. He could hear the music as soon as they had entered the building, "I'm just not cheap," he added with a grin, tightening his hold on Sue a little, anticipating someone from his class here to ask why they were there or how the hell he had a girlfriend or something like that. He sorta hoped that Melissa was both there and not. He wanted to show Sue off to her so she'd stop trying to flirt with him, but he also didn't want to deal with her tonight.
"Easy and expensive, just my luck," Sue sighed as she looked around the gym. She had just gotten used to class at Xavier's with it's tiny class size, now being back in a normal high school was more than a little unsettling for the blonde. She smiled at Matt and leaned against him slightly mistaking his tighter grip for support, "Seems like a lot of people showed up tonight".
"Yeah, I guess school dances here don't suck as much as my last school," Matt had never gone to the school dances there, they were lame and stupid. Of course, he hadn't had a date then, either. Especially once as cute as Sue.
Sue raised an eyebrow at that the dances at her old school had been similar to this, perhaps even a little more extravagant. "It does look fun," she agreed as she steered Matt over to a table. She would like to dance, but she didn't have to at this moment, right now she just wanted a chance to sit down and talk to Matt. "You take classes here right? Do you recognize anyone?"
"Yeah, I do," he agreed, finding the chair and taking a seat. Matt was intentionally fumbling more than usual, "How would I recognize anyone?" he asked lightly, reminding her that he was technically blind. His classmates knew he was a mutant, but not what his powers were. "But....there are a few familiar heartbeats, yeah. There's a lot of people here though..." He only had the one class.
"Sorry," Sue whispered trusting Matt to be able to hear here apology without anyone else near them picking up on their conversation. "I just wanted to know if were were going to be interrupted here, or if I had you all to myself tonight," she said in a louder voice, a smile on her face as she slid into the seat next to Matt.
They could always be interrupted by their friends from Xavier's. "Only person who might is Melissa. She's my notetaker in debate here. Don't know if she came though," she was a nice girl, but she was a little too interested in mutants and powers and all that for him to really trust her.
"She sounds nice?" Sue replied hesitantly, something about the way Matt seemed a little off. The girl turned her head to examine the room as he mentally shrugged, she'd figure out what was up with this Melissa if she met her; although if she was honest she would have admitted to a twinge of jealousy.
Matt stood, offering Sue his hand, "Drinks and cookies?" he suggested. "Or at least, whatever foodstuffs they offer?"
Nodding Sue took Matt's offered hand, "Something to drink would be nice." Sue agreed as they started towards the tables set at the back of the gym.
Reaching the table where the snacks and drinks were, Matt went about getting Sue some punch, making sure that even though he was using his powers, that it didn't look like he was. "Matt!" a voice chirped from behind him. Melissa. "I didn't know you were coming! Need any help?"
"Hey Melissa," Matt replied, handing one cup of punch to Sue and then getting one for himself, "I've got it. This is Sue, my girlfriend," he introduced her. "Sue, Melissa. She's my note-taker in debate class."
Sue's eye's shot open and she shot a glare at Matt, he should have warned her that Melissa was coming up behind them instead of springing it on her like that. Calling on her experiences at her father's her father's business dinner's and function she let her face brighten into a friendly smile, "Hi Melissa, Matt was just telling me about you. It's nice to meet you." she greeted the other girl as she held out her free hand.
He hadn't known! There were a lot of people there the music, he hadn't realized that she was there! "You too," she agreed. She hadn't known that Matt had a girlfriend! Damn it. "You go to Xavier's?" She asked.
"Yep," Sue confirmed leaning ever so slightly against Matt, "I'm a Junior there. What about you? Matt didn't mention which year you're in here."
Without thinking about it, Matt wrapped an arm around Sue comfortably, liking how she fit against him. He also liked calling her his girlfriend. Definitely.
"I'm a junior," Melissa replied, "I've been wanting to come hang out, but Matt keeps refusing. I'm beginning to think he doesn't want me around," she teased, "Maybe we could all hang sometime and do something?"
Tensing, Matt hoped that Sue said no.
Sue felt Matt tense up next to her at Melissa's question, she didn't understand why but he didn't seem to want the other girl to visit the mansion. Slipped her arm around Matt's waist she rested her head against his shoulder as she answered. "They're pretty tough on security at the school with one thing and another, and I thought my father was security conscious," she said with the voice of someone who had lived with the demands of higher security all her life. "Between that and the beginning of the year rush it just isn't worth trying to organize a visit. Maybe later," hopefully Melissa would loose interest in a month or two.
"Oh, okay," Melissa nodded, not understanding why they needed security and all that, but not asking either. "Well....it was good to meet you," she said with a smile, taking a cookie and heading back across the gym to a group of girls.
"Thanks," Matt said, appreciating Sue's reply.
"You're welcome" Sue replied automatically before she nodded at the retreating figure of Melissa, "So what was that about?"
Sighing, Matt drank his punch and then took her shoulder again, "She keeps bugging me about Xavier's and my powers and stuff. And I just don't want to go there. It's not her business and it's just...weird. But she's nice otherwise," he thought she might have a crush on him too, but he didn't want to go there.he wasn't interested in her anyways.
Sue listened to Matt's explanation in silence drinking her own punch. When he finished she nodded, "Hopefully she'll loose interest soon, but you can't blame her, the new and unknown is always interesting. besides she has good taste, you do make a very attractive ambassador for mutantkind." Swiveling on one foot Sue span and stepped in closer to Matt tilting her head to look up at him, "So I'm your girlfriend?" she asked quirking an eyebrow.
"Um...yes?" Matt asked, voice rising almost an octave. Damn it, he was beyond that awkward stage! Clearly his throat, he nodded, "I...I mean, yeah. I want you to. If you want to," he had no idea what he'd do if she said no right now. It would probably be pretty pathetic though and he really, really did not want her to say no.
Sue smiled and had to fight to hold back a nervous giggle, she couldn't help herself Matt was kinda cute when he got flustered. Reaching up she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled his head down to kiss him. "Idiot," she teased quietly as she broke the kiss, "you only had to ask."
Kissing her back, Matt really hoped he wasn't doing it all horribly. Sue had never complained before, but well....still. He didn't want to screw up something like that. "Oh. Really? Huh," it sounded so simple when she put it that way. "I like it. You wanna dance now?"
"I kinda do, yeah," Sue confirmed apologetically. She knew Matt didn't really like dancing, but there was a slow song playing so they could both enjoy themselves the girl figured as she grabbed Matt's hand tugging her boyfriend towards the dance floor. <i>Her boyfriend,</i> she hadn't expected that to happen today but she was glad it had Sue thought as she looked back at Matt and smiled as she gave his hand a squeeze.
It was a slow song and Matt wanted to dance with Sue. It was only the faster ones that he didn't like, which was maybe backwards from other guys, but whatever. He also wanted to show off his <i>girlfriend</i>. And you know...maybe hold her in his arms and all that, too. Because she felt pretty good to him.
