"So, what, do you have to get those jumpsuits from a uniform supplier, or do you guys have an in house tailor? Would you even call him a tailor, or does he have a special title, like SHIELD Battlefield Attire Fabrication Specialist?" What would have no doubt been an exasperated response was cut off as the van pulled up and disgorged its cargo of X-Men. Due to political considerations, the Blackbird had to go in under stealth and be camouflaged before they could meet up with the small SHIELD contingent. Normally, the agency would have been throwing their weight around, but the fugitive was one of their own, and he had kidnapped a minor and taken them across state lines. That made it the Bureau's responsibility, and even the President himself would get between the FBI's eighty year obsession.
"Welcome to the back of beyond. Population unknown. This is a SHIELD force detachment. They'll officially extradite any prisoners once this whole thing is over."
Scott nodded and pulled at the collar of his uniform, the heat was slightly more that he had expected. "It's always good to have some back up. So what do we know now?"
"Not enough. The compound was originally founded by Christian missionaries about twenty-five years ago, and has changed hands a couple of times. Locals say it's been quietly and sparsely populated for a couple of years now. There could be a heavily armed group of nutjobs in there waiting for us, or just Tandy and her dad."
"So yet again, we are going in with limited information and hoping for the best", Kurt said wearily. "At least it is not an entire government this time."
"If we get her close enough, could Adrienne get a read on what we're looking at?" Jim suggested, stealing a glance at the redhead.
"Absolutely," Adrienne nodded, happy to have something to contribute. "Uhh, well, I mean, I think so." Her face fell the more she thought it through. "Or... maybe not. My range is only around twenty feet, so I'd have to get pretty damn close, and I'm not terribly stealthy. It would work better if we had something that came from the compound, then I could tell you exactly what the compound is gonna look like before we get close enough that they'd know I was there," she suggested, eyebrows raised hopefully.
"Maybe something from the locals? There have been deliveries of supplies over the last month or so. Not the most recent, but at least it will give us a layout." Kane motioned over to the agents, who took the suggestion as an order. "I think that we don't want to delay this longer than we have to. The reports on the church were pretty brutal. Those bodies looked emaciated and wrung out, like they'd been dead for months, not hours. Am I the only one who thinks this feels like more than a typical parental kidnapping?"
"Did you read some of the reports about Nathan's father?" Jim asked, and traded a look with Kurt, who was not exactly a stranger to parental issues himself. Neither category of experience was encouraging. The telepath shook his head. "We know Tandy's still alive. I caught a flash earlier -- she's somewhere in the area, but that's all I could tell you. I don't think she's conscious."
"Alive is better than nothing", Kurt said quietly. "Perhaps the locals might know where we could find things that have come out of the compound, something they have discarded?"
Scott nodded, "It's worth a shot," he agreed. "If the locals don't know anything we can probably find something around the edge of the compound to be read. We need more information before we come up with a plan of attack."
"Let's get moving. Regardless of what's in there, we still have to get to Tandy." Kane said, heading up the path. Closer, they might be able to get a look at things inside the compound.
"Hang on a sec." Adrienne had been looking around for things to read and made a triumphant noise when she spotted a discarded cigarette butt, hoping it hadn't been dropped by the SHIELD agents but by one of the men at the compound. "Jackpot," she announced when she'd picked it up and gotten the Reading. "'Guy walked the perimeter of the base with this behind his ear; started smoking it on his way here." She picked up a stick and started sketching the layout for the others to see. "I think this might be the main building, here," she suggested, pointing on the map she made. "Plan your attack and let's get her back and get the hell out of here," she muttered to Scott and the others.
