Tandy meets Jean-Paul in the medlab and they talk.
The teenager was wondering the medlab, careful not to get in anyways way. The last thing she wanted was one of the doctors would to turn her around and send her back to the bed. Her walking took her to the next room which she saw a man inside, curious as she never seen him around before. But the two docs warnings came into her head, 'Do no disturb others.' So Tandy quickly turned to leave before she was caught spying.
"Bonjour," said Jean-Paul politely, a bit eagerly. He was well and truly bored, and the appearance of anyone new was something of an event. Mindful of his outré appearance -to her he must look like a strange man, dressed in scrubs and looking like l'homme invisible with all the bandages, and with a full sleeve of ink to boot- he took care to move slowly as he said pleasantly, "I don't believe we've met... my name is Jean-Paul, also called Northstar. I'm really much better than I look. The bandages are some sort of hi-tech pressure bandages to make sure my skin heals evenly from the burns I sustained."
Tandy stopped and looked back into the room when the man spoke French to her. "Tandy. Just Tandy." Leaning against the door and looked at his bandages, "What happened?"
"A circus burned down around me. I was more concerned with saving the children than with the rising flames."
"Always hated the circus - how bad are the burns?"
Jean-Paul had to smile. "They'll heal. I'm blessed with the ability to heal very quickly."
"What about emotional heals?"
His smile faded. "Those... take time. And effort. But finding the courage within yourself to recognize your emotions and study them until you understand them and you own them... and you can choose not to be controlled by them... well, that is a courage to be treasured and cultivated." His smile revived, gently. "I am sure if you are living here at the X-Mansion, you have the strength necessary to meet this challenge."
Tandy walked into the room and sat down near Jean-Paul. "I am pretty new to the mansion and being a mutant. Sorry I am...not really in a better happy mood. A lot of stuff happened, not circus burning down status, though I really don't like clowns; unless they are in a horror movie like IT."
"That was very good adaptation. I always enjoy watching Tim Curry." Jean-Paul's expression grew more serious and he fixed a steady, supportive gaze on the young lady. Gently but confidently he told her, "We were all new to being a mutant, once. And those of us who've been around a few years are here to help newcomers to the mansion. I offer any help I can give you, mademoiselle."
"I like Tim Curry as well." Tandy looked down at her hands as he spoke and when he offered his help, "What do you know about demons?"
"I know they are not anything I wish to tangle with. But I will if I must." Jean-Paul studied the girl for a few moments, puzzled and concerned. Very gently, in a low voice, he inquired: "Did you tangle with a demon?"
Tandy nodded slowly, "Yes. Part of the reason why I am down here, in the medlab. I was just wondering, Mister Garrison mentioned Snow Valley about people there that knew about magical stuff." The teenager rubbed her forehead gentle. "Trying to wrap my mind that the world isn't as small as I had thought."
"Ahhhh ma petite... that is never an easy thing to do, but those of us who must grapple with the realities of a larger world are very fortunate!" Jean-Paul smiled at some memories that came floating up through the haze of his drugged and addled mind. They were good memories, intense ones... perhaps the reason they had come shining through so vividly. "There is so much to see and do in this world, and when we are blessed to be able to explore it, we must do so with all our heart and strength and courage! We are born into this life to live, after all."
Tandy wrapped her arms around her legs and was in deep thought for awhile - allowing the man's words to sink in. "What if we can't? Like the wound is too fresh. I am not trying to be like a debbie-downer but I lost everything in a matter of a week."
"We do what we can. We must allow ourselves time to heal. I myself have some prolonged recovery ongoing... it vexes me very much, but there is nothing to do but move forward, each day." He found the girl's gaze, though she was hiding behind her long hair, and told her quietly, "I have been there, in that place where I lost everything."
Tandy looked up at him and placed her chin on her knee. "Yea? Well burns suck. I got burned my stove once but getting burned by actual fire...I'll pass."
"It is most unpleasant. I am fortunate indeed that I heal so very quickly, which will keep scarring to a minimum... as previous experience has taught us." Jean-Paul smiled wryly at himself. "I do rush into situations that others would avoid." He realized he had not explained: "I am very fast, you see. Faster than your eyes can follow. And I can fly."
"Superspeed? And I am slightly jealous of everyone that can fly. All I can do is produce daggers that can kill someone at the worse. Oh and glow in the dark."
Jean-Paul's reflexes allowed him not to jerk backwards in surprise, which would have perhaps hurt the young lady's feelings. "Daggers? Actual daggers?" He'd seen lethal metal claws pop out of Logan's hands, but he was having trouble imagining steely daggers emerging from this slender teen's delicate hands. "Sometimes I emit light, too. It's... an ability I am striving to understand."
Tandy looked around, "It's kind of hard to explain." The teenager stood up and walked over to the wall, the crescent moon around her right eye appeared as she concentrated and lifted her hand in an upward motion as five light daggers appeared before hitting the wall and disappearing. "Light Daggers. They are my life force. I can continually store my life force and my daggers are a form of that. So you can glow in the dark too?"
Jean-Paul battled not to stare at the girl. Her life force?! He wondered for some horrible moments if that meant her soul, that she had been flinging bits of her soul at demons.... I can continually store my life force.... Surely that must mean something similar to the light he knew was shining inside him. He could sleep tonight thinking that.
She had asked a question and somehow he recalled it. "I... oui, I guess you could say that I glow in the dark. It's a very bright light. You could more accurately say that I force back the darkness."
"Force back the darkness." Tandy repeated as she thought about that, "That is pretty cool. Especially when you don't want the darkness there."
"Mademoiselle," he said after a few moments of thoughtful silence, "I am sorry for your loss. I happen to be rich, and if I can offer you any help... reestablishing yourself, I would be happy to assist you. I do know what a challenge it can be."
Tandy couldn't help but laugh for a moment and shook her head, "I think I got that covered. I come from a very wealthy family, but it is nice to know that some people do not know that about me" Though she knew that they two just met, he wouldn't know that about her. "But thanks - for the offer."
"You're welcome. And you certainly may talk to me, if you feel the need to talk." He smiled wryly. "Until, of course, we are told that a conversation is too taxing for us invalids. But I am willing to risk a lecture." His smile returned, wide and sly. "Of course I shall argue that enduring a lecture is too taxing."
Tandy titled her head to the side and laughed, "You are strange. I like that. I should get back to my own bed and get some rest. Otherwise I'll be enduring a lecture that may be too taxing from the doctors themselves."
Jean-Paul had to smile. "Of course, ma petite. Do let me know if I may help you in some way... and allow me to make a standing offer of joining you for coffee and chat, whenever you wish."
