Logan makes his return from abroad and runs into Jean at the airport while she's waiting for Scott to pick up their rental car.

Logan made his way through the throng of returning travelers toward the airport exit with his sole bag slung over a shoulder. He was glad to be done with airplanes. Their recycled air smell and the stench of too many humans trapped in a confined space got to him after too many hours. He reached up and rubbed the back of his neck before rolling it from side to side. Never enough room to stretch either.

The airport wasn't much comfort. The terminals were saturated with people, hustling and bustling about on their way to their destinations. Jean sat at one of tables, her carry on bag at her feet as she flipped through a magazine while downing a cup of coffee (or two). The caffeine was a welcome thing, as jet lag had started to kick in.

As she read, a familiar mind cut through the crowd and Jean looked up, meeting eyes with Logan. She mouthed the word 'hi,' a smile crossing her lips.

He arched an eyebrow in surprise. He hadn't told anyone he was coming back to the mansion just in case any surprises tried to follow him back but this was one surprise he didn't mind. He managed a smile of his own and headed toward her, easing his bag off his shoulder. No sign of the fearless leader around either. He sniffed the air and chuckled ruefully though he wasn't too far away from the smell of things.

When Logan came up to the table, rested his other hand on the back of the empty chair across from Jean. "This seat taken?"

Jean nodded to the chair, marking her place in the magazine before closing it. "Not so much. Scott's getting us a rental car. He's supposed to call when he's done. Please. Sit," she said, the smile lingering.

"How have you been, Logan?"

"So that's where fearless leader went. Figured he wasn't far." Logan set his bag on the ground as he pulled out the chair and sat. He shrugged and glanced around them. No one was paying them any extra attention which was just the way it should be. He'd made damn sure he'd covered his tracks before heading to the States. "Been better. Have some persistent bastards after me."He looked back to Jean then gave her a suggestive grin. "What're you doin' out here? Business or pleasure?"

Jean arched a brow, ignoring his usual banter, and the question, for the moment.

"What kind of 'persistent bastards?'" she said. She would've hoped, and guessed, that he knew enough to lose whoever he'd managed to piss off, but after all that had happened at the mansion as of late she didn't want any potential problems on the horizon.

The grin dropped off his face as he leaned back in the chair. Didn't look like Jeannie wanted to play. Shame 'cause if he couldn't have a little fun with one of the few people who'd be glad to see him this whole return thing was gonna suck. "The kind that should still be chasing their tails all over various southeast Asian countries right now. Don't worry, Jeannie. I wasn't gonna bring 'em right back to Chuck's doorstep." At least he hoped he hadn't.

"You're certain?" Jean said, taking a long drink of her coffee. It was her fourth cup in a couple of hours. If she ever decided to go cold turkey on her caffeine intake there'd be a hell of a withdrawal.

"Because if the Yakuza show up at our door I'm going to use you as a human shield."

The spark in her eyes showed she was only partially kidding.

He let the surprise show on his face. "Tense couple months?" He crossed his arms and eyed the coffee in Jean's hands. "Wouldn't be the Yakuza showin' up at the mansion. Ain't those people after me. I'm not sure who exactly's after me but I stirred 'em up while lookin' up my past and what happened in Canada."

As uneasy as he'd feel about it and if his mind wasn't so difficult for telepaths to navigate, he'd almost offer up his mind for Jean to see just what measures he took to make sure he wasn't followed. "And yeah, I'm pretty sure. It's been a couple months since I've seen anything of 'em." Jean glanced away, putting the cup down.

"I'm sorry....Yeah...It's been a bit of a roller coaster year," she said quietly, looking back up to him.

"It just started getting better....I'd been trying to be optimistic but occasionally I have my moments of waiting for the other shoe to drop."

It wasn't like he wasn't used to this. Everyone was entitled to their prickly moments even Jeannie. "You'll have to fill me in 'bout it all over some beers sometime." He smiled to try and get her to lighten up some. She'd been looking plenty relaxed til they started talkin' and he wasn't gonna let her stay stressed out.

He wasn't too surprised to hear the mansion was finally having to face up to the real world. Chuck had always managed to keep it safely ensconced in fairytale land but maybe he was a little disappointed still the same. "It's a new year. Don't get too down yet. Or maybe you just need more vacations like the one you just took. Had you lookin' pretty relaxed."

"It was partially work...I'd gone to visit Moira and Nathan at Muir with Scott and Charles. Before that Scott had taken me to Hawaii as a Christmas slash wedding anniversary present," Jean said. She let a smile escape.

"You're right. I could do with some more traveling that didn't have to do with saving the world."

Huh, so Cable wasn't around anymore. Things had certainly changed while he was gone. "What're they doin' up there? Never thought I'd see the day the pair of 'em wouldn't be hanging 'round the mansion."

Fearless leader was at least treating Jeannie right even if it wasn't often enough. The pair of them didn't know when they should be lookin' out for themselves first instead of everyone else. "Yeah. Everyone needs to let loose once in a while. Especially those in charge. I can always show you a good time, Jeannie."

"Where have I heard that one before?" Jean said with a faint smirk, then shook her head as she leaned back in her chair and took on a more serious look.

"And it may be a bit of a mostly permanent situation for Moira and Nathan...Some things happened....I take it you saw the news about Genosha? The death of the president and his brother?"

Logan chuckled. Maybe he wouldn't be too bored back at the mansion after all. He and Nathan had never been friends but he'd respected the man. Whatever had happened, he didn't deserve it. He nodded. "Yeah, caught a couple reports here and there but always seemed like the full story was missing. Things go down bad?"

Jean's eyes took on a faraway look as she scanned the crowd. He didn't know. How could he?

"Perhaps we should talk about this somewhere else," she said softly.

"There's a lot more to it. A whole lot more."

That sure as hell didn't sound good. "Yeah, fine by me." From Jeannie's scent, things had gone horribly and he wondered if they weren't still dealing with the fallout even now. Summers was probably going to blame him for upsetting Jeannie. Not his fault he'd been out of the loop. "We can catch up more at the mansion." Where was he anyway? "Summers is taking his sweet time with that rental car. Maybe you should go check on him?"

"I imagine the line's out the--" Jean's phone rang. It was a simple ring, no music, nothing fancy.

"Speak of the devil," Jean said, then added to Logan as an afterthought.

"Do you need a lift?"

She refrained from saying the word 'ride' because of the potential innuendo. Of course she was probably going to shoot herself in the foot by making the offer by having the two men in the car together.

The last thing Logan needed was to hitch a ride with Summers and Jeannie back to the mansion. Only one way that would end and it wouldn't be pretty. "Nah, I'm good. Wouldn't wanna ruin Summers' good mood just yet." He grinned teasingly and tried to keep all the edges out of it. "Catch ya back at the mansion then?"

Jean was fairly certain mentioning that Logan's return would probably do that all on its own.

"You're probably right. Yeah, I'll see you there," she said with a smile, then answered the phone before it went to voicemail.

Logan nodded then grabbed his bag as he stood and made his way from the table. He'd let her break the news of his return to Summers. Maybe it'd be softer comin' from her. He'd be dealing with Summers soon enough as it was and what few extra moments he could do to avoid him he'd take. Now time to find himself a cab. He should have enough money to get himself to the mansion then once there he'd start dealin' with everything.
