Jennifer comes into eVolution to look for some clothes and Adrienne snaps up the opportunity to do some custom work. Among other things, they discuss clothes, Jennifer and Warren's practice, mutation, and Jennifer's position at the mansion.
One of the nice things about District X was the fact that a number of shops specialized in things specifically for mutants. A growing number of stores outside of the area had things that catered to them but it was hard finding an entire shop and hard finding things that survived the kind of torture that Walters put them through. One of her friends had recommended a particular clothing boutique in the District for her to check out and, so, one Saturday morning, she walked from her apartment to the storefront.
The shop was open when she pushed open the door - she ducked her head more out of instinct than need - but it was early enough that there was only one other shopper, which was nice. Jen knew that what she needed would probably take some time, so it was nice not to have to wait out the crowd.
"Walters!" Adrienne greeted happily when she looked up from the shoe design doodle she was working on behind the counter, getting up from her stool and offering a hand to Warren's partner. "Good to see you; it's been too long. What have you been up to?"
"Adrienne!" Jennifer smiled in surprise as they shook, though she kept the handshake to the barest minimum contact that she could without being rude. Not that she wasn't pleased to see the other woman. "I had no idea you were moonlighting here or else I would have stopped by earlier. And a fair bit since we last crossed paths. I'm setting up shop at that Institute of Xavier's which I think you're fairly familiar with, right?
"Are you really?!" Adrienne's eyes went wide and she grinned excitedly. "I teach math at the mansion, so yeah, pretty familiar I guess; wow, that's great. Good for you! Well, the important part is that you're here now," she nodded, in her best guidance-counselor voice, before realizing her comment might come off as a little insulting. "I mean, not that you desperately need a new wardrobe or anything, but there are some great pieces here, some stuff you'd look amazing in. Are you looking for anything in particular?"
She was snickering well before Adrienne managed to finish speaking. "Oh come on, Frost, you've seen some of my best pieces and they ain't that great. I ground heels into dust on a regular basis." Jennifer's eyes flickered over the racks of the clothes around them and she sighed a little. "Honestly, though, I'd love to have better pieces but the budget wasn't exactly friendly to having to buy good looking things that survived me. I'm heavier than I look, much heavier, and I'm stronger than I sometimes realize. I need clothes, shoes especially, that look good and can take a beating."
Lifting a nearby shirt with a finger she gave Adrienne a look. "Would you guys have something like that or, if not, be able to work with me on making something? A lawyer's only as good as she looks sometimes."
"And here I thought Legally Blonde had proved otherwise," Adrienne commented, stepping out from behind the counter and wading into the forest of racks with both hands. "We can certainly accommodate you, Walters, not to worry. We do a lot of custom pieces. Our clothing designers are geniuses. We do a lot of work with special materials for mutants with fabric-destruction issues, like razor-sharp skin, organic-material degradation, that sort of thing. 'Haven't done any shoes for mutations affecting weight, though, I don't think," she admitted thoughtfully, passing a couple blouses in the special material over to Walters after sizing up the woman with a well-practiced eye. "I'd love to take on the challenge myself though, if you want to let me. Shoes are a bit of a hobby for me."
"Hobby away then! Between my body's denseness and me clomping around, my current shoes don't stand a chance. Hence these ..." Taking care not to overbalance and, thus break something within ten minutes of coming in, Jennifer wiggled a sneaker clad foot in the other woman's direction. "Great for everyday stuff, not so much for the courtroom or a first date." It was hard not to stroke the fabric in her arms so she didn't even try to pretend she wasn't - the material was gorgeous! And probably more than she could afford, though she had stocked up on the ramen lately...
"Ooo, so we're looking for first-date-wear as well?" Adrienne waggled an eyebrow at her. "What types of shoes do you fancy? Are you into heels? Oxfords? Mary-Janes? A little of everything? Actually, maybe a better question would be are there any types you hate?"
Jennifer snickered slightly. "We're always looking for first-date-wear," she said, black eyebrows doing a dance in response to Adrienne's eyebrow wiggle. "As for hating - well, boots. I don't do boots. I have calves the size of actual baby cows, so either I can't wear them at all or the ones I do get to fit are just uncomfortable. Other than that, honestly, I just wear whatever I can get into and don't destroy."
Adrienne nodded. "Okay, cool. Well, I'll get to work on some heels with reinforced... heels, and some courtroom-appropriate footwear! Would you hypothetically kill me if I hypothetically asked you your weight so I can get a handle on the material I'd need to reinforce the heels with? I mean, would steel work, or would I have to talk to the West Coast and get an inventor I know over there to come up with a special alloy? Unless Scott or Korvus could come up with something," she mumbled, half to herself as she was deep in thought. "Here, why don't you go try a few of these on?" she asked, putting an armful of dresses, blouses, slacks, and skirts in Jennifer's arms.
The stack of clothing in her arms was almost up to her eyes and Jennifer had to shift to make sure she didn't drop anything. "You, uh, sure that dress on top won't look like a really tiny skirt on me?" she asked, trying to eye the length of the material that was threatening to slip to the floor. When she was sure it wouldn't end up under her feet, Jennifer switched her gaze back to Adrienne and grinned. "Hypothetically? Hell, Frost, I barely fit through your door. I stopped being shy about my height and weight after my first serious boyfriend after the change dumped me. Last time I checked, I was about 280 but I think I actually might be denser than that, it's hard to tell. Mutations is funny business."
"I'm sure," Adrienne nodded emphatically, hiding the fact that she really wasn't sure. Usually she was spot on with how clothing fit on any body type, but Walters had a body type unlike any Adrienne had ever seen in person before. And Adrienne felt a little disconnected from the fashion world lately, which wasn't helping. But on the other hand, if she was right, it would be a big boost to her confidence. Except, wait! Idea! "Mutations is definitely funny business," she grinned, giving a hand a quick wipe and slapping it against the dress on top. "It's gonna fit perfectly," she beamed after taking a quick Reading. "You're gonna look amazing. And ooo, I love those slingbacks I'm gonna design to go with them!"
She stared at her over the mound of clothing. "Did you just do some funny mutant magic?" she asked, looking intrigued.
"I certainly did," the brunette grinned. "It's psychometry. Can be both post- and pre-cognitive. Comes in handy in situations like these. Especially here in the District, where I can use my powers freely." She led Walters over to the fitting room as she spoke. "So how's the practice coming along? Busy?"
"Damn, girl, that's one useful power," Jennifer said, letting out an almost silent whistle. The cases that Adrienne's power would have helped with ... though she highly doubted anything her friend could have found would have been usable in the actual courtroom. The laws and procedures were still trying to figure out what to do with mutant abilities. When they weren't downright terrified of them. "You know, we're getting there. It's always hard to establish yourself as a new firm when there are others that have been around since the turn of the century - or so they like to claim. But we're getting there. And I'm going to be real busy as I split my time between the firm, being on retainer for XFI and working for Xavier. Not that I'd have it any other way, of course."
"Real busy is probably going to be an understatement," Adrienne smirked. "Take it from someone who's in a similar boat. With consulting for XFI, working for Xavier, and putting in time here, there's not a lot left over. But yeah, it's hard to have it any other way once you start down the track." She wouldn't change things, despite all the trouble she'd been into since coming to the mansion. "I could go use my powers on some of these firms if you'd like," she offered. "Disprove those claims. But don't go getting your hopes up about my powers being useful to you in another capacity," she chuckled. "They're not admissible in court. I know this because instead of going to trial and defending myself, I cut a deal with the FBI to drop charges against me over having my husband killed in self-defense several years ago. So what is it Xavier has you doing, if you don't mind my asking?"
Walters ducked through the curtains and, as gracefully as she could, dropped the load of clothes onto the little chair that they'd provided and started to strip down. "I don't mind one bit, Frost, but if you think that's going to distract me from bringing up that little bombshell you just dropped, you're fooling yourself. I'll just wait until we have dinner or something and then ask about it. As for Charles, I've been brought in as the legal counsel for the Institute. We're seeing how it goes, all things considered, but it's been pretty low-key so far."
"Legal counsel... yeah, I suppose that could be useful," Adrienne muttered, bemused. "I do keep thinking it's amazing we don't get sued more considering how much danger we put the students in, what with some of them being wards of the state and all. Now it's just dawned on me that maybe we have been getting sued, and we just never had a good lawyer as counsel before. And hey, you don't have to buy me dinner to get me to talk about the 'bombshell'," she pointed out in an easy tone. "But since you offered, I'll be sure to take you up on it."
"Oh trust me, my predecessor knew his shit - I haven't really had enough time to settle down and read through the files on the Institute but I'll be meeting up with him to figure out if there was anything that came towards Xavier and, if so, how he got you guys out of the mess." She shoved her head through the curtain and gave Adri a pointed look. "I have a sinking feeling, though, that while most of the legal trouble managed to be avoided entirely, I'm going to have one hell of a reading ahead of me of all the trouble this place has gotten itself into."
"But hey," Adrienne chuckled, speaking with false enthusiasm, "if it makes it any easier, now you get to be a part of future trouble! That's going to make it so much easier when you don't have to read because you're experiencing the trouble for yourself!"
