Jean and Hope -Thursday Morning
Feb. 21st, 2013 02:15 amUnable to sleep, Jean runs into Hope very early in the morning. Jean's reaction confuses her.
Indirect Trigger Warning - Emotional Reaction to Loss of Child
It was about 2:15 am in the morning. The mansion was quiet save for the hum of the safety lights in the hallway and the soft whurr of the heater. Jean couldn't sleep. Various thoughts kept her awake. When she couldn't shut her mind off she often went for a walk. It brought some comfort to pass by those closed doors knowing the children were safe in that moment. She was never how sure how long that'd last but she took what she could get.
This night she was drinking a cup of honey-lavender tea as she walked. Her feet were bare. She liked to feel the carpet under her toes. The air was cool enough to where she was cold but she enjoyed it. It brought a sense of connection.
Deep in the night, when everything in the mansion had gone quiet, could be one of Hope's favorite times of the day. She had always enjoyed reading late at night, but now it also gave her the chance to explore a little in her astral form without scaring anyone. Not that she would violate anyone's privacy and enter rooms of course...
So she quietly 'floated' along the hallways, watching the interplays of lines, lights and colors that interwove her vision. Ever since the incident with Tandy and Topaz she had been trying to figure out what they were. The strange aura's surrounding people were still the clearest in her vision though.
Had Jean's attention not been focused elsewhere she might've sensed Hope coming. But as it stood she didn't, so when she rounded the corner the sudden confrontation with a transparent girl surprised her and she let out a startled gasp as the mug flew out of her hand. But a split second course correction and many years of finite control left the mug and tea floating in midair just before they hit the ground.
Taking a moment to compose herself, Jean shook her head as the tea flowed into the mug and floated back into her hand.
"I'm sorry...I didn't expect anyone else up at this hour."
She found herself not looking. She knew who it was. She really should've looked. It was just difficult when she saw a reflection staring back at her.
~Eep.~ Hope startled a little herself. She had to look for a moment who it was, wresting to push the overlay aside. Strangely the corona about the doctor remained, a clear and bright. ~I am sorry for startling you, Dr. Grey. I did not realize someone was there... I'll be right back.~
Hope focused for a few moments, quickly slipping back into her own body. A few moments later, she quietly appeared in the hallways, still tying her robe shut. "I am truly sorry..."
The silence was brief but deafening, the girl there one moment but gone the next. Her voice made her turn and she quickly shook her head again.
Just look at her. You do it in psi-training all the time. Why not now?
Because she was alone with her now. There weren't other faces--people-- to distract her. "No, it's okay," she said softly. "I think we were both surprised."
"I hope I didn't startle you too much, Dr. Grey. I saw you dropping the tea." Hope quickly searched for words, having almost no idea what to say. She didn't interact very often with Dr. Grey. "Perhaps it's very forward to ask, but if you often walk here at night, I could try to avoid these hallways?"
Jean studied a vase on a nearby table for a couple of moments, trying so hard to think of what to say that she forgot to speak.
The younger psi frowned quizzically. "Uhm... Dr. Grey... Are you well?" Hope asked, confusion clear in her eyes and voice.
Glancing up, Jean immediately shook her head. It was more accurate than her actual response. "I'm fine. I just...I can't--I should really be getting back to bed," she said, rubbing the back of her neck.
She quickly turned, swallowing, then walked away, her pace quick, practically running.
"Good night," she said, her voice disappearing down the hall.
It was better than nothing, yet she couldn't say her name.
Hope blinked. And blinked again. This was very strange... "Goodnight Dr. Grey..." Her voice drifted after the doctor...
Instead of running back to her suite, Jean went into her classroom and closed the door behind her. Dropping into a chair, she tried to keep her hands from shaking as she put down the mug on the desk. She'd left the lights off, and stared at the empty rows of seats, lit up only by the moonlight coming from the windows that cast the metal curve of the smaller desks in muted metal.
