Sam finally works up the nerve to talk to Tabby, and potential future plans are discussed.
After having his talk with Kurt quite some time ago, Sam had mulled over what his suitemate had said. His fellow mutant had encouraged him to approach Tabitha, to talk to her and make sure there were no misunderstandings between them. While he wasn't quite sure that Kurt was right or not about there maybe, potentially, possibly being something between then, it was hard to deny the wisdom in his advice regardless. Better to find something like that out now rather than down the road when a misunderstanding came up. His recent attempt to shift his career focus got him thinking about things again, and Kurt's advice had come back to him in the process. So, while he had no idea what to say, really, or how to bring it up, he'd decided to seek out the blonde girl.
The library was the first place he decided to check, her usual haunt when she was on duty, being a librarian and all of course. It wasn't a place he found himself all that often, despite having been the resident English teacher, which he chalked up to having previously teaching history before returning this time. Sam walked inside and looked around, trying to see if Tabby was around, and if so where she was. Hopefully there wouldn't be many students around, if any.
Tabitha was restocking some non-fiction on the bottom shelf from someone's recent research paper. Her back complained a bit from the extended bent-over time, so she straightened her legs to stretch out the muscles. She flattened her palms on the floor and sighed with relief.
Turning a corner, Sam looked and saw Tabby posed on the floor, which made him pause and just stare for a second or two. He wasn't quite sure what she was doing and whether or not he should interrupt her or not, and before he could decide what to do his elbow bumped a book that was already teetering on the edge, knocking it to the floor with a bang. "Oh, whoops. Um, hi there, Tabs."
The blond rocked forward onto her toes in surprise, but luckily did not lose her balance. She straightened hastily with a welcoming smile. "Sam! Hi, what brings you to my corner of the galaxy?"
"Oh, you know, just in the neighbourhood, thought I'd pop in and say hi, that kinda thing." Sam grinned awkwardly and rubbed the back of his neck, shrugging slightly before bending down to pick up the book he'd knocked over. "How're you doin'?"
She shrugged. "Eh, mostly training, keeping up with the library. Actually trying to get some more audio and braille stuff for Matt." Which was 100% babble and she knew it, but actual talk just didn't seem plausible.
"That... that sounds good. Gettin' stuff done, y'know, going with the flow." Sam smiled, nodding his head. "Say, listen, Tabby..." Here was where he was supposed to actually tell her what he'd come there to tell her, but the words weren't coming to him. "I, uh. I just wanted to say." Something. Eventually.
She reached out for the book in his hand, trying to ignore the sudden skip in her pulse. She was being dumb, she decided. She bit her lip nervously. "Say?" she prompted.
"To say," he started once again before stopping. "Just to... to say hi." Sam grinned and waved a little before realizing he'd never hear the end of it from Kurt if he was asked about it - and Kurt would ask him how it went once he found out - so he continued. "And to see if maybe you might want to, I dunno, hang out sometime. Grab a bite to eat, maybe?"
Tabitha did her best impression of a landed fish as her brain zipped into overdrive.
Words hit the back of her throat in a tidal wave, she struggled to sort them out. But one escaped, the only one that really mattered. "Yes!" she spluttered, as a goofy grin spread over her face.
"Oh yeah?" Sam said, surprised at her reply. It was a pleasant surprise, of course, so he was quick to add. "I mean, yeah, of course, that'd be... that'd be awesome, Tabs." He grinned back at her, not having anticipated a positive response even though it was what he'd really wanted to hear. "We should totally do that then. Maybe... maybe if you're around this weekend or something?"
She held so still she barely remembered to breath. "That would be good," she said. She wouldn't be at all surprised if she started vibrating right there. "I would like that."
"That's great, I'd like that too, a lot." Sam was sporting his own goofy grin by this point. "Then I'll... I guess I'll call you later and we can set up a time, yeah?" He was quickly running out of things to say and didn't want to shoot himself in the foot with things going so well, so extricating himself before he blew it seemed like the best plan.
She nodded, terrified anything more she said would shatter the moment. "You know where to find me," she said in a voice that was much firmer than she felt.
