After breaking up with Sue, Matt's not as okay as he seems. It shows in his training session with Logan who ends up giving Matt some fatherly advice while feeling extremely unsuited to the role.
Matt was off his game in self defense that day, distracted and missing things he should have managed easily. Overbalancing and falling on the mat - again - he shook his head and pushed his hair from his face. "Sorry," he muttered, getting up again. He wouldn't quit, Matt was too stubborn for that, but he was very aware that right now he was sucking badly. It was a good thing this wasn't a test.
Logan arched an eyebrow. "Don't need to be apologizing' to me." He wasn't sure what was going on with the kid, but whatever it was was seriously messing him up. It showed in how the blocks the kid had nailed down cold for weeks now were suddenly failing. Half the time it looked like he didn't see them coming at all. Logan stepped back and crossed his arms. "Alright, enough. You wanna tell me what's goin' on? You're a helluva lot better than what you've been showin' me for the past fifteen minutes."
Shrugging, Matt went to get his water bottle, "Dunno," he finally replied, which was a big fat lie. "Sue and I broke up," he finally admitted. They'd been sort of drifting apart and neither had really been interested in fixing it, which had led to the inevitable conclusion. "No one cheated or all sorts of drama, it just didn't work, but...I dunno. Sucks." A lot.
Logan just waited the kid out. It looked like he was wanting to talk despite everything. Ah, that explained it. He wasn't aware of how all the kids related to each other. He didn't see most of them and the couple he did were in the context of lessons. Not much room for chit chat there, much less wanting to talk to him about personal shit like that. "First relationship?" Logan hazarded. Kid was torn up over it enough like it was his first.
Matt nodded, "Yeah," he replied, "We dated for..." he had to pause and think for a moment, "about six months. Me and Sue," six months was a long time, too. A really long time for teens.
"They don't all work out the way you want 'em to." Logan wasn't sure what he should do. He hadn't ever considered himself much of a mentor aside from teaching people how to fight. All this stuff was usually handled by a teacher that didn't set most of the students on edge. "But that doesn't mean they don't mean nothin'."
That was true. And really, Matt didn't know what to expect either. "Yeah. I just...I dunno. I mean, I like her. But, at the same time, we sort of just drifted apart. But now I miss her. Does that make sense?" If he liked her and missed her, how did she drift away? He didn't get it.
"Makes perfect sense to me." Logan moved over to clap Matt on the shoulder and motioned for them to take seats on the nearby benches. "You knew where you stood with her. You don't have that anymore, instead you got the unknown ahead of you and it's making the instinctual side of you want to go back." He shrugged. "Feelings sometimes suck, but the worst part of 'em? Is when they make no sense."
That was the truth. "It was nice having someone. Different," he had Wade, but that was different from Sue. Completely different from Sue. He didn't have parents though, he'd never known his mother and his father died. No grandparents or aunts or uncles. Nothing. "That's the truth," he agreed with a sigh. "I didn't think we were the end all be all Romeo and Juliet crap or anything, but....I guess I never thought it'd end right now like this either." Did that make sense?
"Always hard to figure out how things are gonna go, but you're better off than those that do think drama and excitement are the point of relationships." Logan shook his head. Those fools always ended up with chaos running their lives. "Yeah, knowin' someone has your back no matter what is damn nice, but sometimes it just takes a while to find one or two that sticks." Not that he could speak much to having a choice in the matter. He'd just ended up with people having his despite himself. Hard thing to reconcile when you only ever expected to rely on yourself and then suddenly turn around and have a bunch of people willing to help you out no matter.
"My mom...I never knew her. And my dad never really dated. Sometimes he'd have this woman over, but..." it wasn't exactly a relationship. "I was supposed to be asleep and not know. I remember her sometimes though. And it's foster homes and rehab and juvie after that. It's not like I have any clue what I'm supposed to do except from TV and that's always so realistic," sarcasm, awesome. "But yeah, it was nice knowing that there was someone for me. And now...I'm alone again. I'm used to it, but it still sucks after having something nice for a while."
It wasn't the best kind of family life from the sounds of it, but the kid's dad had cared for him. Not all could say the same. "Even the people that have an idea don't always do it right. It's a learnin' process for everyone. Don't be too hard on yourself." Logan leaned over to bump the kid's shoulder with his own. "And yeah, right now bein' alone sucks, but you know what? While it didn't go how you wanted, you handled it endin' with dignity. You didn't ignore the problems or do somethin' that would've forced things to end. You dealt with it like an adult."
The older Matt got, the more he realized just how many problems his father had had. The ones he'd known about as a kid, like money, had only been the tip of the iceberg. That said, he had done everything he could for his son and Matt had no doubt that his father loved him and wanted the best for him. Absolutely. "Heh," Matt pulled his hair back and tied it with a rubber band. It was getting long enough to do that now, "I guess? Still sucks. I dunno...I guess there's no way to have a happy breakup. That's just not how they work."
"Yup. No gettin' around that. Just another part of life you deal with." Though Logan had a feeling the kid already knew that but couldn't hurt to maybe say it again. It wasn't like he couldn't see it happening around him being in the mansion. Maybe it was just who they were but shit happened to the kids as much as it did to the adults. "Best thing to do is what you've been doin'. Focus on other things, live your life until at some point you realize you've moved on. Sucks like hell right now, but the time'll come when it won't."
"Alright," that was basically how Matt dealt with anything. Standing, he picked his staff up, "Again then. Until I get it," he was having cravings again, which he knew was tied to his break up. Physical exertion helped and Logan knew that. So. Again. And again. And again.
The kid was much like him in many ways and if Logan could keep him from fucking up in some of the many and varied ways he had he'd count that good. It was just fucking weird to think of anyone coming to him for advice about anything. Maybe he should've sent the kid to Summers or Chuck, but too late now. The damage was done. He followed the kid back to the center of the floor and this at least he could do well. Work the kid to exhaustion so he didn't have to think anymore.
