Tandy and Frank meet for the first time after the journals.
Frank struggled out of his New Mutant hoodie and sat down in the kitchen, staring at the coffee machine as it brewed his favourite beverage in the world. Come on kettle. Boil! Boil!
He wasn't quite sure about this whole New Mutant thing. It seemed a bit... he didn't want to say "cult-ish" but maybe he hadn't been so far off when he'd cracked wise about paramilitaries to Clint. The Danger Room had been even more worrying. Still, he thought he'd done okay. And either way it was over now. If only he could get his coffee...
Tandy appeared in the door way of the kitchen, "Hey." The blonde said as she grabbed a water bottle from the fridge. "We never met properly. I am Tandy, we met on the journals." She finally said after taking a quick swig of the water and sat down near him. "Even if we did just have training together."
Oh. Ooooooh, dear. He'd been dreading this. "Hi, Tandy," he said, nervously. "I'm Frank." And I'm sorry I mentioned your parents who you hate? No, no, not very tactful. "So... how's life?" he asked, lamely. Oh, God, this was not going to end well.
"Life? It is good. I hopefully better in the next week." She took another look drink of her water. "And you? How are you adjusting? I know it can be pretty... overwhelming."
"Kinda, yeah," said Frank ruefully. "I'm dealing, though. And I gotta admit, a school where ass-kicking's on the curriculum is kind of refreshing." It was at this point that the coffee machine gave a high-pitched squeal to indicate readiness. Frank rose and poured himself a cup. "You want some?" he asked.
"No thank you. I don't drink coffee." Holding up her water with a shake to it. "You'll get used to it. The New Mutant training is for us to learn how to handle our powers. The ass-kicking is just a bonus."
"An awesome bonus. Useful bonus too, by the sound of things." He sat back down at the table, sipping coffee and wincing. Too hot. Far too hot. Needs sugar and time. "So, uh... I'm sorry about the journals."
The blonde looked at him for awhile and then decided to tell him so that he was on the same page as the others. "My mother and step-dad...they were murdered by my real dad in November. And then I was kidnapped by him, long story short...he is in coma now because of me and my Uncle and Ms Frost are my new guardians. All the students know it and I believe most of the adults as well."
Frank looked at her for a long moment, and then put his coffee down. His mind raced. What the hell did you say to something like that? "Christ," he muttered. "That- that is rough, man. That is seriously fucking rough. I'm sorry." He tried to think of something, anything else to say. "...And with that in mind, I'm REALLY sorry about the journals."
"It is really okay. I am learning to deal with that along with everything else. But figured I should tell you so that you know. Future references." Tandy gave him a side ways smile, "Life is never easy, especially when you are a mutant."
He snorted a laugh at that. "Preach it, sister," he muttered. "Still, I guess it works out sometimes. This place seems okay. I mean, kung fu and coffee on tap, what more could we ask for?" he smiled wryly as he said it.
"How much of the mansion did you see? Did you know they have a pool, a beach set up somewhere in the basement...boiler area...a skate park in the back, a quarry...I got there to unleash my daggers. Better than going inside a room to do it. Game room, every Sunday evening Clint and I watch old movies...it something I used to do before I came here and found out he likes it too. Ummm...." The blonde put on her thinking face as she thought if she missed anything else, and she was pretty sure she had.
This was probably a good thing, considering Frank looked so shocked his head might as well have exploded. "Wait, back up. A beach? How the hell do you- I mean, a beach needs an ocean! Or at least some body of water. How can we have a beach?" He did not even ask about the skatepark or the pool. There is really only so much extravagance a mind can handle at once.
"Well it is created with like sand, sunlights and a wade pool. But it feels like the beach but not like the real thing."
"Oh." He paused mid-rant, looked a little embarrassed. "That makes sense. Um..." he sat down. "I... may have assumed we had someone who could warp space and time and stuff," he confessed. "Like... someone who's mutant thing is making beaches. Which is really dumb, now I think about it."
"I think we do have someone here that could. Warp space and time, making beaches would be pretty awesome." Tandy smiled at him, "It isn't dumb...what is dumb is glowing in the dark. What fun is playing hide and go seek in the dark when you glow."
At that, he cracked up, only just keeping from spilling his coffee all over the table. "Oh man," he said around giggles. "Please tell me you've done that. That is awesome."
Tandy smiled and shook her head no, "No. It just came to me one night as I was sitting in my room glowing, like a glow worm. One day I hope that I can control it and turn it on and off when I want. Not when it wants."
Frank nodded, still snickering. "Guess that'd be better for your sleep cycle, if nothing else," he said, after he quietened. "Still. Glowing is cool. Saves on electricity bills at least. And I bet someday there's gonna be a blackout and you're gonna be the most popular girl ever."
"When that day happens, I will finally have a use to do something good! Having destructive powers can be a downer. So you want to see the other places at the mansion you obviously missed during your first week here?"
"Sure. Why not. Just give me a minute to finish this?" He indicated his coffee, before taking a sip. "I'd down it, but, uh... well. It'd hurt, and be dumb, so no."
"Take your time. Wouldn't want to be the cause of burns on your throat."
He smirked at that, and blew on his coffee. "Real kind of you. Anywhere you have in mind? I mean, to show me?"
"Just the basement. And I say that not intending to sound like a serial killer."
"Aww. But I like serial killers! They always get me the best presents." He tried the coffee again, found it just cool enough to drink, and swallowed most of it. "Alright," he said, standing. "Let's do this."
Frank struggled out of his New Mutant hoodie and sat down in the kitchen, staring at the coffee machine as it brewed his favourite beverage in the world. Come on kettle. Boil! Boil!
