Maddie and Sue are having a great time, until Maddie's life is ruined.

The bustling old-timey soda fountain was busy, which was normal for a Saturday afternoon, especially now that the weather was finally warming, but Sue and Maddie had managed to snag a corner booth, affording them the opportunity to sidle up close as they waited for their order to arrive. The time passed quickly as the two girls held hands under the table, chatting easily, discussing the film they had just seen, baseball, Maddie's recent trip to LA, how Sue had managed to pull off a surprise party, and everything in between. Soon enough, however, the teenagers were struck into silence at the amazement that was their orders sliding into place before them.

"What was it you got again," Maddie asked after the appropriate moment of respect for the beauty of how their food was presented. She pulled her plate of grilled cheese and tomato soup toward her, but her eyes were glued to the glass vase (such was its beauty that to call it anything else would be a great disrespect) containing Sue's ice cream sundae. But she was craving something savory, and thus happily pulled off a corner of one of her sandwich's triangles, dunked it into her bowl of soup, and popped it into her mouth before washing it down with a sip of her chocolate egg cream (she had to have something sweet after all). Perfection.

"Cookie Monster!" Sue exclaimed happily as she reverentially pulled the vase to a rest in-front of her. The blonde's spoon hovered in the air over the sundae flicking backwards and over the ice cream, it just looked so good she didn't know where to make the first scoop and mar it's perfection. With a grin Sue pushed her spoon into the sundae, it may have looked amazing but she was willing to bet that it would taste even better. "So we come to this quaint little place with an amazing selection of ice creams and you order a grilled cheese?" Sue asked with a teasing grin, "What's wrong with this picture?"

The redhead's eyes crinkled in laughter while she took another sip of the egg cream. "Excuse me," she exclaimed in mock offense. "But for your information, egg creams are a soda fountain staple. You're the one who's going all new fangled and fancy with that sundae with those pieces of cookies. You kids these days." And with a smug smile, as it to prove her point, Maddie popped another corner of her grilled cheese sandwich.

"Mmmmmmmm."

"Oh right, a staple is it? Well some of us aren't being held back by the past but have kept up with the times. Is that soup hot enough for you old timer?" Sue asked in mock concern as she fought against the smile pulling at the edge of her lips. "You just enjoy your sandwich while I luxuriate in wonderful cookie and hot fudge heaven," as she spoke Sue scooped up another spoonful of her ice cream waving it under Maddie's nose to flaunt the ice cream before swallowing it. "Ahh that hit the spot," she noted as she closed her eyes to better focus on her sense of taste, "Perfect."

Taking advantage of the momentary lapse in surveillance, Maddie quickly brandished her unused soup spoon and swiped a large piece from the blonde's sundae. For that was the beauty of soup spoons, what they lacked in handle length, they more than made up for in capacity, which was especially important when one's mission was a raid on a neighbor's ice cream. "That's pretty good," she commented after her first bite. But she would hold off judgment until she had time to examine the rest of her fairly substantial spoonful, an act she immediately turned her attention to by raising her spoon close enough to her face so she could give it a proper visual inspection.

"Not the best I've ever had, mind you," she continued before devouring the rest of the ice cream. "But it's still pretty solid."

Sue's eyes snapped open, her gaze travelling from Maddie's spoon to the glass and back up to Maddie's spoon. The blonde shook her head with a smile, "You've had better? Where?" she ask curiously her hand slowly inching across the table. "You've got a little cream on your nose she pointed out lifting the half eaten piece of Maddie's sandwich up to her mouth and taking a bite as she grinned impishly at the redhead.

As an indignant response was an unviable option at this point given that she had first blitzed Sue's ice cream, Maddie just wipes her nose then pushed the plate closer to the blonde. "Do you want half of my sandwich, Sue," she asked through her bemused smirk. "Since, you know, you already contaminated that piece with your cooties."

"I have to be very careful, you know." Maddie twisted a lock of the blonde's hair around her index finger; it was just too fun to play with. "I don't have my Sue-specific cootie shot and I don't want to catch that Yankee fever they've infected you with."

"So I have cooties now do I?" Sue asked with a laugh as she leaned against Maddie and took a bite of her half of the sandwich. "You haven't complained about them before now I notice. Maybe we shouldn't put you in any positions where you could to get those cooties, should we?" She pointed out with a grin. "Besides I have pictures oh you wearing the pinstripes after I crushed you in the fantasy league don't I? So you've already been infected by Yankee fever haven't you? Which by the way beats the Ranger Mania any day," she joked good naturedly.

The redhead's hand dropped from Sue's curls, looping under the blonde's arm, laying to rest just above her knee. The joking about baseball and cooties, it just made Maddie want to kiss Sue. But they were in public, and in addition to not being a fan of overly affectionate displays of public affection, she also didn't want to risk catching the eye of some narrow-minded person and them ruining the fun she was currently having. On the other hand they were in Brooklyn, in a rather trend-forward establishment which probably likely attracted progressive people. It didn't take too long to decide what to choose and a wide smile spread across Maddie's face.

"Hey, Sue."

"Mhmm," Sue swallowed the last piece of her half of the sandwich and twisted so she was facing Maddie. "What's up?" the blonde asked curiously, her eyebrow arching as she took in Maddie's grin. "You look pretty pleased with yourself," Sue noted with a laugh, her hand slipping under the table to squeeze the other girl's hand.

"That's because I am," came the assertive reply. Maddie twisted her wrist so that pair of hands join comfortably together once more, their interlaced finger locking them palm to palm. With the ease of movement of one decidedly confident in what she was doing, Maddie pressed her lips to Sue's. And for a few brief moments, she allowed herself to relax into the cheesy-flavored kiss until some internal timer buzzed, letting her know that it was time for the kiss to end, and Maddie leaned the side of her head against the booth's backing. The "Cat that ate the Canary" look was still plastered to her face, smile even broader than before.

"And now I am extremely pleased with myself."

Sue giggled at the Cheshire Cat look on Maddie's face sliding along the booth until she was siting side by side with Maddie, resting her head against the back of the booth before turning to look at the other girl, her face a mere hair's breath from Maddie's a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "I'm pretty pleased with you too," she commented with a laugh. "Although it doesn't look like you're that worried about catching cooties anymore." she teased, "then perhaps we don't need to be so careful about infecting you. Besides, I'd kinda like to see how much wider your grin can get," she murmured quietly before she leaned forward to kiss Maddie.

Wade elbowed Doug in the side and tipped his chin toward the girls in the booth, not even bothering to suppress a grin as he waggled his eyebrows at his friend. This... this was going to be hilarious. It was entirely possible he'd be able to make Maddie's face scrunch up into a frowny face of epic proportions. They slid into the booth in unison, Wade taking the seat by Sue while Doug took the one by Maddie. "Hello, ladies," Wade said, beaming.

Doug had a matching grin on his face as they bracketed the young ladies. It was the bounden duty of a surrogate older brother to make his surrogate younger sister roll her eyes in exasperation, which he could already see the beginnings of in Maddie's facial expression and body language. He remembered wistfully being where they were, giddy with the intensity of feelings and the realization that someone felt that way about you. "And how are you both this fine sunny day?" he asked brightly.

It was like being shot... well not really, but with the way Maddie jerked back upon hearing Wade's voice and feeling Doug's presence slide in beside her and the desperate look in her eyes, she might as well have been. Of course they would happen to visit the same ice cream shoppe as her, Maddie had mentioned how cool it looked before and how she wanted to try it out. But more than that, it was like both men had a preternatural ability to sense the perfect (on their end at least) opportunity to ruin her life. Seriously. And it was worse than having a brother or a father pop in like that because that sort of behavior was almost expected when dealing with blood relatives (thankfully, Maddie knew her dad would never have done that).

Maddie groaned in despair, and crumpled in on herself, her arms providing a barrier between her face and the tabletop while also somewhat blacking out the world around her. If she didn't see it, maybe it wasn't actually happening. But she could still feel how Doug's weight shifted the cushioning in the booth.

Crap.

"I hate you both," she said clearly enough for the two men to hear. "So. Much."

Completely and utterly ruined.
