Topaz planned on spending most of the California trip in the Storms' library. Maddie, of course, isn't about to let that happen. (Backdated to July 31)
"Hey loser."
The sanctity of the library's peace and quiet had been violated in the most unholy of fashions, and the blasphemer was leaning against the door frame, a sardonic smile on her lips. Maddie may have had a little too much pleasure at breaking the silence so abruptly, but she had been standing there long enough that the stillness had started getting to her; she was itching to do something. It was like a still pond just begging for someone to send a stone skipping across its surface.
So, yeah, watching the ripples was deeply satisfying.
California had been something Topaz had agreed to uncertainly at best. She'd never traveled much with Luca and Alice, and she hated going into the unknown.
But Sue had introduced her to the Storms' library, and it was really...quite lovely. She was currently curled up in the corner with The Talented Mr. Ripley, and she was completely enthralled in the story. Even Maddie's disruption of the peace couldn't tear her attention away as Tom beat Dickie to death with an oar.
"Hey Maddie. What's up?"
The redhead's reply was to telepathically tug the book out of Topaz's hands, and leave it hovering just out of the girl's reach. "It's a beautiful day," she said. A wry smile tugged at the edges of her mouth as she closed in like a bird of prey going for the kill. "I'm sunburnt. So we're going to make trouble. It's too beautiful to waste sitting in here reading a book that is better served for when you are not in the Sunshine Capital Of the World."
"I'm not taking no for an answer so let's go."
Topaz looked up at the book floating above her head, looking at it for a moment before turning her gaze back to Maddie, raising an eyebrow. "Shouldn't you be tryin' to stay out of the sun if you're sunburnt? I mean I'm not the most experienced in that, but that seems like it would be logical option." She wasn't really arguing -- she already knew she wouldn't win, it wasn't really worth it.
But she couldn't just give in either. It was entirely possible Maddie would drop dead of shock if she did.
"I'll be wearing real clothes, and my hat," said Maddie. The book swooped and dived above Topaz's head. "There's a British Store. With imported foodstuff." She was not above bribery. "Sue's Gran's driver will probably take us."
"I know you're going to say yes so let's cut to the chase, shall we?"
"But it's so much more fun to be difficult," Topaz replied with a light smirk, though she pushed herself up nonetheless. She could always finish book later, after all -- she wasn't sleeping the best, reading was always a good alternative.
The book floated down, and lay neatly folded on the vacated seat. "Excellent." Maddie clapped her hands and rubbed her palms against each other like a movie villain whose plan was coming together nicely. "Now go get dressed and we can head out."
Topaz looked down, examining herself, before looking back up at Maddie. "I am dressed," she pointed out. Possibly not dressed for an outing into the California sun, but she didn't own the widest variety of clothes - she only had what she'd managed to collect since she'd come to the mansion. She hadn't managed to get much for summer clothes yet.
"Oh." There wasn't much more that could be said in that case. This wasn't the mansion, it was Los Angeles, home of movie stars and glamorous people, you couldn't just go out in whatever. While not sporting the hottest trends herself, over a year and a half of having a former fashion model as a teacher and the discovery the perfect pair of jeans had piqued her interest in fashion enough to look somewhat stylish in a romper, or so she hoped.
"Right then," she said and clapped her hands together. "Grab your purse or wallet and cellphone and whatever else you need, and let's go!"
"Alright." Topaz had to wonder what she was getting herself into, agreeing to go out with Maddie, but she knew the redhead wasn't going to just let her spend the entire week hiding in the library. So going out it was.
"Meet you at the door in a few, then."
