Sue and Maddie discover how hard it is to get anything past the Storm family's matriarch and have a meaningful talk about their relationship.

Sue wrinkled her nose as an errant strand of hair brushed against it pulling the teenager, however unwillingly, towards wakefulness. Sue could feel the warmth of the sunlight on her back as it streamed through her bedroom window. It was surprising how much of a difference a real bed made to waking up, especially when it was one that wasn't stuck in the middle of the infirmary Sue decided as she stretched out contentedly. It was a surprise for the blonde when in the middle of stretching she felt her hand collide with someone.

Finally cracking open her eyes Sue rolled over onto her side, smiling as she saw the mane of red hair mere millimeters from her face. Hair that had been responsible for her rather rude awakening, and she couldn't just let something like that go without some kind of response could she? Grinning Sue slipped her arms around her still sleeping girlfriend, dropping a kiss on her neck before she blew in the redhead's ear. "Time to wake up Strawberry."

It had taken Maddie several moments for her still mostly asleep mind to process the goings on in her immediate environment. The movement on the mattress beside her had alerted her to the fact that she was not alone, but she hadn't really thought anything of it. Then Sue had hit her, and, while not enough to inspire full awakeness, her mind was jolted into action.

Unable to sleep, Maddie had initially gotten out of bed to make herself a cup of tea to help soothe her mind and enable her to sleep in this foreign bed. En route to the kitchen, however, she had poked her head in Sue's room and noticed that the girl was still awake. And so Maddie had wandered in, and the two started talking, discussing recent events until Sue was able to fall asleep, and in the process Maddie had found herself too tired to move from her position on the bed, and had fallen asleep beside her.

That was Monday night, and the pattern had continued from there in much of the same manner. Usually, though, she was the first to rouse from slumber, so this morning's show of affection was a pleasant surprise. That is until Sue's actions sent a hot, searing jolt of pain across her shoulders and Maddie flinched away from the touch.

"Sunburn," she muttered almost incoherently as she reached back and guided Sue's arm to a slightly lower position across her waist. "Mmmmm. Better."
A look of worry flashed across Sue's face, "Sorry," she replied apologetically, shifting her hand slightly into a more comfortable position on Maddie's stomach. "I know you've been stuck wearing your lifeguard uniform all summer, which you look ridiculously hot in," Sue murmured her voice muffled by the mass of Maddie's hair in which she had buried her face, "but you know that's no reason to go crazy when you actually get to wear your own swimsuit and end up looking like a strawberry and being stuck inside," the Blonde teased.

Maddie took her time to respond, first yawning and rubbing her eyes then stretching before she shifted and scooted in place. When she finally settled down, the two girls' faces were mere inches apart with the redhead's mouth set in a line of annoyance. "I was trying to even out my tan lines," she explained, reaching out and lazily twirling a rogue strand of blonde hair. "I blame you for letting me doze off like that and leaving me to bake in the sun like a lobster, not a strawberry."

"So it's my fault you got sunburned now?" Sue asked arching her eyebrow. "I would have woken you up but you just looked so cute while you were sleeping, I didn't wanna disturb you. Besides, I did tell you to put on sunscreen." Sue grinned at Maddie, "But it just means we get to stay inside and have a movie marathon instead of lying by the pool. And you are so a strawberry, red with brown seeds... well, spots."

"I still feel like a lobster," the redhead protested with a wrinkle of her nose in distaste. It wasn't as though she hadn't slathered up with sunscreen, and reapplied it periodically, but the California sun apparently had a vendetta against her. Well, she wasn't about to let this ruin her trip, so there. "Movie marathon sounds like a good idea." Maddie beamed at her girlfriend, "You're such a genius, Sue."

"I'm gonna go shower and dress; don't want your Gran to give me disapproving looks for sullying your virtue."

But before she could even sit up and push the comforter away, the door to the room opened.

Sue's hands instinctively clutched at the edge of the comforter pulling it up despite the fact that both she and Maddie were fully clothed. "Whaa? Who?" she inquired with a squeak as a foot appeared in her bedroom door.

"Good morning dearies," came a cheerful voice from outside the room as a silver tray appeared in the doorway followed by a smiling white haired old lady. "I hope I didn't wake you, but it's too beautiful a day to waste a-lazing in bed." The house keeper carefully placed the tray at the foot of the bed before removing the covers with a flourish. The smell of homemade waffles wafted up to the girls as the housekeeper smiled. "Now don't you be letting it get cold now, or be taking too long either. Your grandmother wanted me to tell you to meet her for lunch in town when she asked me to make up breakfast for you." the old lady told them with a smile.

Then in a whirl of smiles and apron strings the old lady had left the room as fast as she had entered leaving a silence and the smell emanating from the tray as the only reminder of her visit. "Sue turned her head to look at Maddie finally letting the comforter slip from her fingers as the blonde's shoulders shook with barely restrained laughter. "Sooo, breakfast?" she asked as she offered the redhead a smile.

"She brought us two plates." The initial shock of being interrupted wore off somewhat, Maddie had been left staring at the breakfast tray and its contents. In the early morning brain fog, several seconds had passed before she was able to put her thumb on just what was bothering her about the situation. Besides the housekeeper barging in. "Two plates," she repeated, turning her body toward Sue. Deep breath, as the realization hit her, and exhale. "Your grandmother knew I was here. Fuck."

Sue's eye's widened as they tracked down the bed towards the tray, confirming that. as Maddie had noticed, the tray was set for two people. Her gran knew Maddie was here, the thought echoed around in Sue's head not quite sinking in. The teenager blinked at the tray before looking up at Maddie, "At least she sent you a nice breakfast instead of security to throw you out." Sue offered with a weak smile before the blood drained away form her face, "She wants to talks to us today...both of us."

The thought of meeting with Sue's grandmother startled Maddie, who, caught mid-sip, sputtered and coughed as the orange juice went down the wrong tube. "What do you mean us," she asked as the coughing fit subsided. Reaching once more for the juice (for she was sure there was nothing Sue could say at this point to catch her off-guard again), Maddie sipped it slowing, her eyebrow raised, belaying a quizzical look at the blonde beside her. "I don't speak WASP, but all I heard was a 'you'. Not a 'both of you' or 'you ladies' or even a 'y'all'. So from where I'm sitting, I wasn't invited."
Sue paused her rubbing of Maddie's back to stare at the other girl in disbelief, "That's evil, after all this," the blonde indicated the breakfast tray, "you wouldn't send me off to meet her alone would you?" as she spoke Sue dropped her head slightly giving Maddie her best puppy dog eyes. "Besides all you were going to do was spend your day huddled up inside watching movies," she pointed out sticking her tongue out at Maddie, "And a nice trip into the city and lunch might be fun. Which is WASP for, 'You can't make me go face her alone.'"

Maddie was about to laugh and point out the irony of the situation, that Sue had practically forced her to agree to this trip (not that it took much in the way of convincing, it was a chance for a vacation after all) and had not stopped telling Maddie about great both her grandparents where, and now she was afraid to go to lunch with one of them by herself. But then the redhead caught sight of the sincereness in those puppy dog eyes, that Sue really didn't want to go alone; Maddie knew that eventually Sue's teasing challenges and forthright pleas would lead to her agreeing to go to lunch with Gran.

"Fine," she signed dramatically to indicate that she was agreeing to this against her will. "I'll go with you. Can't be worse than when Wade and Doug gave us the sex talk on our first date." That was still a cringe-worthy memory. Maddie shuddered. "It's not like either of us are in danger of impregnating the other and causing a huge scandal. And she thinks that you'll grow out of this phase eventually anyways. Five bucks says she had some lesbian liaisons at boarding school; it wasn't completely unheard of in that time"

"Thanks, I'll make it up to you later, I promise." Sue answered in relief. She knew Maddie wouldn't have made her go alone, but it was always nice to know that her girlfriend would be there too. Especially after the matriarch of the Storm family had gone to such pains to reveal that she knew about the nightly rendezvous this morning. "Nothing could be worse than Doug or Wade showing up," Sue agreed, "Actually that's not true, what would be worse is if they showed up in the middle of lunch with Grandma...We are sure that they're back in New York aren't we?" the blonde asked as the blood drained from her face. "She'd probably think they were delightful, but I'd die if that happened with Gran in the room."

The redhead paused mid-chew to glare at her girlfriend. ~Why would you even suggest such a thing?~ The thought of Dwade (as Maddie had deemed them) showing up at lunch with Sue's grandmother and what would happen when they found out that the two girls had been sleeping in the same bed was possibly the worst possible scenario she could ever imagine. ~Now that you said it they're going to show up.~

"I swear," she said, waffle having safely undergone peristalsis and was on its merry way through her digestive system. "They know when I'm doing something where they can embarrass me. And they know when you're thinking about them."
"You make it sound like they're some kind of horror movie villain," Sue pointed out, "The kind that just appear out of nowhere at just the right time to freak everyone out." Sue paused a moment before grinning at Maddie, "We have ruled out the possibility that they are a pair of horror movie villains from some b-movie right?"

Maddie shrugged and returned her attention to her waffles and berries, mind wandering as she half-heartedly sliced the waffle with the side of her fork. Bringing up Doug and Wade reminded her just how much she missed them, even though that day rated easily in her top 10 worst days ever, ranked between "Getting her period" (not because she got her period, but more for everything else that had been going on round it) and "Finding out that the Tooth Fairy wasn't real". But she could laugh about it now that months later.

"You know," the redhead said abruptly, breaking the silence, as she tried to stab a rogue blueberry. "I think about sometimes what it might be like to have sex with you."

"Whaaa?" Sue squeaked in surprise before she started coughing on the sip of orange juice she'd just taken. The blonde sat up in the bed sucking in a deep breath glad for the fact that her hair had fallen over her face to hide the blush which was rising onto her face. "Where'd that come from?" she spluttered peeking at Maddie through her hair. It's not as if she had never thought about sex, but to have Maddie come out and say it was not something she'd even considered was going to happen this morning.

"Well your Gran probably thinks we're doing some very undecent things in here and going to lunch with her reminded me of Doug and Wade crashing our date to remind us of the importance of safe sex," explained Maddie calmly as her focus remained on her plate of food (even though she was all nerves on the inside because Sue looked like a scared bunny rabbit and Maddie didn't want to freak her out or anything). "Which led to me thinking of how in our society girls aren't supposed to admit to thinking about sex and certainly not talk about it. So this is me going against society's expectations and talking about sex." She looked up and flashed Sue a beatific smile.

"Oh," she remembered something else, "and I know you were all like 'Whaaaa' when Matt was all 'I wanna get you naked on a bearskin rug' partly cause it came from nowhere so I thought it'd be better to, you know, let you know that I've been thinking about it. Ooh strawberry." And with cat-like reflexes, the redhead reached out and swiped the strawberry from her girlfriend's plate, popped it into her mouth, and smiled the smile of delicious victory.

The entire situation was just a little bit too much for Sue to process and she fell back against the pillows with a sigh, "Don't even joke about that," she told her girlfriend, "I don't wanna think about my gran and what she thinks is going on in here. Although she sent breakfast so she must approve, or be ok with it...but what does that say about..." The blonde buried her head in her hands. "My head hurts just trying to figure that out," she admitted, "that's probably what my dear old gran wanted all along. She's evil like that." She told her girlfriend with a hint of her usual humour.

"I wasn't all whaaa, it just took me by surprise, kinda like this." Sue pointed out poking Maddie in the ribs before tucking her hair behind her ear and flashing a shy smile at Maddie. "Not that I haven't thought about it either," she admitted as the blush from earlier tuning Sue a bright shade of red. "Hey that's my Strawberry!" she broke off her previous line of speech as she noticed Maddie happily munching away. "I was saving that!"

"I thought I was your strawberry," the redhead said. Maddie lay down beside Sue, her head resting on her girlfriend's shoulder while tray of food floated to the side, out of harms way. She wondered if the blonde could hear her heart thumping rapidly in her chest, ready to burst out at any moment as Sue's words sunk in.

"You've thought about it too?" Maddie tilted her head back, eyes studying her girlfriend's face. "Sex, I mean."

"You both are," Sue replied sagely, "That was the strawberry I was gonna eat," the blonde tossed her girlfriend a mock glare before slipping an arm around the redhead's shoulders and kissing the top of her head. "And you're the strawberry I get to kiss." Sue finished with a smile as she rested her head on top of Maddie's.

"Yeah, I've thought about it," she confirmed, "I am a healthy teenager after all." Sue took a deep breath trying to get control of the butterflies flapping their way though her stomach, all the time acutely aware of Maddie lying next to her. "But I'm not ready yet Mads, not really, and I don't want to rush into anything."

Maddie abruptly sat up and looked down at Sue eyes wide in surprise. "Oh my G-d!" The nerves had been replaced by a flash of fear. "You don't think I'm talking about now do you? I mean, not just not in your grandparents' house, but like not now in general. I didn't even think you thought about it!" The redhead knew she was being rather hypocritical in a sense, speaking frankly about sex to break the taboo that women in general don't yet assuming her girlfriend didn't think about sex.

Being a teenager was so complicated.

"I mean, you're all polished and refined," she said as she tucked a section of hair being her ear. "And you never thought about it with Matt and you were together longer and you grew up in this world," a sweeping gesture accompanied the words, "and you're all smart and sweet and pretty and I'm
going to go bury my head in that pillow to hide my embarrassment at all this rambling."

There was nothing Sue wanted more at that moment than to have the ground open up and swallow her up right then, "Well you brought it up and I just thought you were thinking about it, so you wanted to. Not here but like soon and..." Sue's voice trailed off as she left herself fall back into the pillows with a loud groan.

"What does this world have to do with anything?" Sue asked Maddie out of the blue. Since the genie was out of the bag there was no use trying to hide from it and she was curious what her girlfriend had meant. "I mean all this is just stuff, it doesn't really change people's behavior all that much."

Of course there was no way out of this now. Maddie sighed, and turned her head to the side, peeking at Sue through the strands of red hair that obscured her view. "I don't mean the money, Sue," she said. "But the expectations of how to behave, how your Gran wants you to present yourself. And somewhere in there I bet there is an unspoken rule of 'no sex before marriage and only then for continuing the bloodline'. It'd be like discovering that Hope's been thinking about sex, it's not something ladies of proper breeding do."
Maddie raised her shoulder in a half-hearted shrug. "Plus you never thought about it with Matt. And you guys were together longer. I just... didn't know you thought about it. You're too 'evolved' to think like that."

"You're kidding right?" Sue asked with a grin, "Kids in this world, all they do is think about sex and parties. Well that and how to best spend all of daddy's money. People just have a public world, all smiles and charity galas and a private world which normally...isn't so nice. That's where all the stories of affairs and drugs come from, but the only rule I know of is don't let the two world collide. Besides, even Hope might surprise you one of these days. Breeding can only take you so far after all, after that teenage hormones will tell."

"And Matt's Matt, and you're you." Sue told her girlfriend seriously as she took Maddie's hand, "He's not the one here, you are."

"But..." Maddie pushed her hair out of her face and abruptly stopped her protest of Sue's words. She couldn't comment on the behind the stage happening's in the blonde's world of privilege, so she would have to trust what she was told. Still, Sue wasn't like that, all wild and partying and sexing it up, she was Sue. And although she had changed since she arrived at the school, relaxing, opening up and becoming much bolder, she was still the science loving, chess playing geek Maddie had befriended a year ago.

Maddie sighed and snuggled closer to Sue, her eyes focused on their joined hands. "I just... We're so different, you know? Him and I. And what your grandmother so clearly thinks that I can read it on her face without having to use my powers about this just being a phase..." She swallowed hard and closed her eyes. "I don't want to be something you look back on and think 'I can't believe I did that'. I mean, I know who I am. And I've liked guys and a girl or two and I like you. And I like you more than I liked anyone before. And even though we're 16 and know that this probably isn't going to last forever, I just...." It was becoming more difficult to talk now, all the thoughts flying around Maddie's brain and her unable to grasp one for more than a split second.

"I want this to be a 'real' relationship. Not three months of just making out then getting bored."

Sue sighed and gripped Maddie's hand tighter as she lifted her free hand and very gently tapped Maddie in the middle of her forehead. "Hey! If this was just a phase, just making out till I get bored do you think that we'd be here? I mean right here now in my bedroom? I don't just let anyone fall asleep here you know."
Slipping her arm around Maddie's shoulders Sue pulled her girlfriend a little closer and rested her head against the redhead's. "My gran is who she is, I love her but she doesn't control my life. She doesn't get to decide what's real and what's just going to blow over. I do." Sue knew life was more complicated than that, but as far as she was concerned this was just how it was going to be. "I've liked guys before, but never a girl before you," the blonde admitted, "But that doesn't mean anything to me, well apart from how amazing you are," she told Maddie with a smile. "I don't know how long we'll be together, but you're the only person I want to date." Sue could hear the blood pounding in her ears as she spoke, she had known how she felt for a while but hadn't expected Maddie to have these kind of worries or to sound so vulnerable. It made the blonde realize how strong Maddie's feelings were, which only led Sue to realize that she felt the same way. It was a terrifying and elating feeling at the same time.

"Well. Okay then." That was about the extent of Maddie's verbal capabilities at the moment so mentally exhausted she was from the past few minutes of overthinking and worrying. The redhead hadn't realized until she saw Sue poisoned just how deep her feelings ran for her girlfriend, and how much it would hurt to lose her. But she was happy, relieved that Sue shared her thoughts and feelings on the subject of their relationship, and to show it, Maddie placed a delicate kiss on her girlfriend's neck. "Me too."
