Angelo finds Tabitha gleefully doing what she does every day, only the location has changed.
Delightfully, a fresh install of the library management software made by one Doug Ramsey worked perfectly when applied to the X-Corps literature. It made a nightmare project into simply scanning bar codes as one organized.
Tabitha even hummed happily as she worked.
Angelo leaned over her cubicle wall, looking amused despite the fading remnants of a bruise on his jaw. "Nice to see you enjoying your work."
She grinned up at him. "It's work I know. And very peaceful," she said.
"That's what I like to hear. Does that mean everything's going fine and happy over here and I can tick checking on you off my list, or is there anything not quite right for you?"
She smiled brightly with a small shrug. "It's exactly like the work at the mansion, only without the students." An even quieter hole to hide in.
Angelo tilted his head at her. "Is that good or bad? I thought you'd want something we know for sure you're good at."
Tabitha felt her eyes widen as she resisted the urge to escape. "I enjoy my work," she said defensively.
"Tabs, stop looking at me like a deer in headlights", he said patiently. "I'm not trying to catch you out. I just want my people to be totally happy at work."
She looked away, guiltily. "I..." have been hiding? Didn't want to talk to anybody. Didn't want to let people know she was completely losing her mind? "Should expand my horizons. Maybe I should work with someone? I.." She struggled against her mind freezing. "I could be an excellent assistant?"
"That can be arranged." He glanced up and around the room. "Who do you think you'd work with best?"
She pouted at Angelo. "Why do you always ask hard questions?"
"I'm the boss, it's my job", he said unrepentantly.
She scrubbed her hands over her face so she couldn't check to see if they were shaking. "Who've you got?"
"Well, let's see. Me, John, Sooraya, Yvette..."
Tabs tilted her head in thought. " What is Sooraya working on? Think she could use a hand?"
"Well, she's got a pet project called Malala's Rose, about education for mutant girls in Afghanistan. You could ask her if she needs any help with that."
Tabs nodded slowly. "That actually sounds perfect. Our cover job in Afghanistan was actually kind of awesome. I'd love to help out."
"You want me to talk it over with her?" he offered. "Or will you do it?"
She shook her head. "That's all right, I can catch her the next time she's in. When is she usually here?"
"Most days. But unlike me - and you, I notice - she sticks to standard office hours."
She nodded again. "I will most definitely hunt her down then."
