Rahne goes to the MedLab Tuesday evening to see the new student, plane rides and cooking lessons are discussed, and Jane gives a little demonstration.

Jane hadn't gotten a good look at the place yet. Doc Samson and Dr. McCoy had promised that some people would come down later to give her the tour, but so far all she had seen was the outside, some halls, and the MedLab. The Mansion was a lot friendlier than Norbrook was, but it was also a bit scary. So many different things to look at! She was actually glad to be a bit isolated here, at first. But now she was getting bored. The doctors were looking over her tests and she didn't really have anything to do. Maybe she could ask for a book or something?

There was a knock and then voices, and then a red-haired girl she hadn't seen before came toward her. "Hi there." A tentative but friendly smile. "You're Jane, aye? I'm Rahne Sinclair -- thought I'd maybe come down and say hello."

Jane smiled at the other girl shyly. "Um, hiya! I'm, um, Jane, yes. Aye? Hello." She shook her head a bit and started over. "Sorry, I'm a bit of a space-case. Yes, I'm Jane. Nice to meet'cha, Rahne!" Jane hopped off of the stool she had been sitting on and stuck her hand out for a shake.

Rahne grinned and shook hands. "Nice to meet ye too. Did the accent get ye? I'll give warning now, I'm from Kinross-shire in Scotland. I do lose people a wee bit now and then."

"Scotland! Cool! I've never been to Scotland! Well, I don't think that I have, anyway. I've never really been outside of the mental institution until today. But no, I like your accent! It's very... Scotish! Um. Hi!" Jane smiled at Rahne and hoped that she didn't come off as a total moron. She really wanted to fit in here.

Rahne was finding the enthusiasm perhaps a bit startling, but it was friendly and therefore actually rather refreshing after some of the past few days. And really, though she wasn't entirely clear on Jane's previous circumstances, she imagined that being here instead of a mental institution might well be occasion for enthusiasm. "Hi. How was the trip here? I'd ask about yuir stay so far, but I suppose that's mostly been from in here?"

"Well, I haven't seen much of this place yet, but it looks neat. You have shiny wood railing and wood paneling and stuff! And paintings. And I saw a vase with flowers in it. Dr. McCoy said that someone is going to take me on a tour of this place in a bit. I can't wait!" Jane bounced a bit on her bare feet, rocking back and forth. "The trip was pretty cool, too. I got to ride on an airplane. They had little packages of peanuts. I don't like peanuts, but the trip was fun. Have you ever been on an airplane?"

"Aye -- to come over here, and one visit back. It looks like ye'll have several somebodies for the tour -- Jamie's giving it, ye'll like him, he's very welcoming, and there're a few more planning to tag along. 'Tis a pretty place, aye." She tilted her head. "What do ye like? Besides not peanuts. I've been taking the excuse of everybody here to cook more fun things than I could've got away with at home."

"You can cook? Wow. I want to learn how to cook." Jane suddenly looked shy again. "Um, will you teach me how sometime? Or mabye I could just watch you? I won't be a bother, I promise! I'll just watch. And I like most things except nuts and pudding. I like icecream a lot. Could you teach me how to make icecream?" She looked at Rahne hopefully, shifting from foot to foot. She was a bit worried. She didn't want to be pushy or anything, but she really liked icecream.

"Ye'll find there's nearly *always* ice cream here. Though Bobby makes most of it -- he's got the power to freeze things, see. But I can show ye the regular way, and other things -- Lorna's likely better at teaching it than I am, but 'tis a lot of fun. Ye wouldna be a bother."

Jane smiled at Rahne. "Thank you! Speaking of powers, what's yours?"

"I can turn into a wolf. Or stop kind of halfway, though that was harder to work out. What about you?"

She was glad that Rahne didn't mind her asking. She had just kinda blurted it out after all. But she was really really curious. Doc Samson had told her that most of the people here had powers like hers. At the institution, nobody else did, and it set her apart. Here, she would be like everyone else! "I can turn into a cloud. Wanna see?"

"Into a *cloud*?" Rahne's eyes widened. "...Aye, if ye donnae mind."

"Yep!" Jane closed her eyes briefly and concentrated. Rahne watched as Jane got somehow fuzzier around the edges. A mist formed around her whole body and then her body seemed to dissolve. Jane's clothes dropped to the floor and before Rahne floated a small, white cloud. *So? What do you think,* Jane asked the other girl telepathically.

"That's fascinating," Rahne replied frankly, out loud. *...I suppose ye can hear this, then?* she added, trying to project her thoughts the way they'd been taught to do in Psionic Defence if they *did* want a telepath to hear them.

*Sorta. It is easier to project than to receive. I couldn't "hear" you at all if you didn't project at me just then. Speaking aloud is probably best* Jane slowly re-formed herself into her human form. She didn't bother to put her clothes back on. "So? What do you think?"

"Amazing," Rahne said truthfully, but glanced with some embarrassment down to the clothing on the floor. "...I see ye've got a bit of the same problem I do, not taking yuir clothes along, though."

Jane shrugged. "I don't mind. Clothes are overrated." She saw that Rahne was a bit uncomfortable with her lack of clothing and immediately started to gather up her clothes and put them on. She wanted to fit in here after all. Jane noticed that Rahne averted her eyes as she got dressed. Oh well, clothes were a small price to pay to make a new friend. She hoped that Rahne was a friend. She thought she was, but how could she be sure? "Um. So... what do you like to cook?" she asked akwardly.

"Well, I think souffles are maybe hopeless here, but really, about anything I've tried -- especially oatmeal, I suppose. 'Tis a bit of a joke now, me feeding everybody oatmeal or oatmeal bars. Ye can do more with it than most people think."

"I like oatmeal!" She smiled at Rahne hopefully. "Can I watch you make it some time?"

"Aye, of course." Rahne glanced over toward the doctors. "I suppose they'll say when they havena got any more questions or whatnot for ye, and then Jamie and all will show ye about, and then about any time I'm not in classes or some such I'd be glad to show ye the kitchen stuff."

Jane smiled at the other girl. It was a start. And maybe she had just made a friend. "Thank you."
