Matt and Topaz escape the mansion for the afternoon, hiding away at a bookstore. Backdated to February 17th.

"...Have you ever read a summary of a book and realize it could either be really good or really bad?"

Topaz flipped through the book in question one more time before looking around for Matt.

"Yep," Matt agreed, curious what the summary was. "I think some editors or whoever write those things try to make them awful like that," and it didn't really seem to affect book sales in general. "What's that one about?"
She was flipping through pages as she spoke. "Well it's about vampires - not Twilight - but-" She slammed the book shut suddenly. "High school drama. Forget it. If I wanted to deal with high school I wouldn't be reading books."

"High school drama is so much more awesome in books," Matt agreed, "because they have the adventure and solve the problem or whatever and you don't have to deal with the consequences later. No one wants to read about Harry Potter and his PTSD," which was what happened in reality. Then again, life at Mutant High was more fictional than reality sometimes. Even if Matt had graduated.

I actually wouldn't mind that," Topaz said thoughtfully. "An entire book that deals with the fact that Harry was emotionally and physically neglected and abused for the first eleven years of his life, and then systematically lied to and used by the adults he trusted for the next seven." It actually sounded morbidly fascinated.

Very much so, when put that way, "That...would be really interesting actually," Matt agreed slowly, "Or Twilgiht talking about how Edward is a creepy stalker and all that," almost like fractured fairy tales. "You and I should write this maybe. Could be fun."

"Fun until you realize I have no writing skills," Topaz said with a bit of a snort as she continued exploring the books. "You write it, I'll edit."

"I don't believe that," Matt argued, "You read way too much not to have some idea of a good story. The hard part is organizing it all and actually you know....writing it," he was sure she could do it. Topaz struck him as a writer somehow. "Do you wear glasses?" he asked, semi-randomly.

"Oh I'm sure I could organize a story and do all the mechanical stuff, but I don't have the imagination for a good idea," she said automatically. "Then again we live in a school for mutants...might not really need an imagination." Hell, she could write a memoir that would read as fiction to most people. "No, don't wear glasses. Why?"

"I dunno, you strike me as someone who would," how he determined that, he had no idea. But it seemed to fit his mental image of what Topaz looked like. Something inadvertently trendy, whatever that was. "I don't think you give yourself enough credit though for imagination. You read too much not to be creative."

Now she was actually kind of curious what he thought she looked like. "I don't know, I just don't think I can write well enough for anyone to actually enjoy it, you know?"

"I guess...." Matt didn't push anymore. He didn't have enough confidence that he could write so that people would see the world the way they saw it. He could write how he saw it, but trying to explain so someone else wasn't exactly easy. "Anyways. Wanna get a snack at the cafe?"

She was flipping through another book as Matt suggested the cafe. Another flop. She probably wasn't getting any new books today. "Sure, sounds good." She was actually pretty hungry.

Bookstores were mostly good for audiobooks and chatting with other book people, Matt ordered most of his books online. Sometimes though, it was good to go to a store to find new books and he had discovered he could read the raised ink on a regular page if he concentrated, it just wasn't something he much liked for casual reading. "Cool." He agreed.
