Sue and Maddie decide to spend spring break at a friend's beach house in California.
A cool ocean breeze chilled the California evening air, sending goosebumps up Maddie's bare arms and a shiver down her spine. It was warmer than New York, and it may have been all in her head, but she was now regretting not taking a jacket to dinner. Ah well. She could handle it.
"Hey." Maddie paused at the doorway, holding Sue back from heading back into their vacation abode. It had been a long day, starting with a morning flight and ending with a delicious al fresco dinner. Okay, there may have been some napping in between as well; cross-country flying was pretty exhausting. But now it was time to head back in and relax. But first, the redhead had something she needed to do. "Do you mind if I take advantage of this time difference and call my parents? I mean, I texted them when we got here, but it's been kinda hard to catch them at a good time given the four hour difference, and they're only like an hour behind here."
"I won't be long," she said, a doleful look in her eyes. "I promise."
Sue turned to smile at her girlfriend, "Sure, they've probably been dying to hear from you all day," she noted with a nod. The blonde glanced up and down the beach as she lingered in the doorway of the beach house, the night was pleasant but there was a breeze coming in off the sea which kept the air around the beach house cooler. Sue shrugged off her light jacket and held it out to Maddie, "Don't want you getting to cold while you're talking to your parents" she noted offering the jacket to the red-head.
With a sheepish look, Maddie graciously accepted the offered jacket and shrugged in on. Having it already warmed by Sue's body heat provided an instant break from the chill in the air. "Thanks," she said, and offered a quick kiss in exchange. "I promise I won't be too long. Like, half an hour absolute tops. If it gets to an hour I give you full permission to come out and forcefully drag me inside. Cause you know I'd probably freeze to death and not realize it."
"Okay? Full permission."
"I'm gonna have to hold you to that," Sue replied with a laugh, "Cause you know, having my girlfriend freeze to death is so not how I want to see this night going. Although, if you take too long I might just fall asleep all curled up nice and cosy in the warm, empty beach house, it has been a long day and you know how bored I get when I'm left all by my lonesome," the blonde warned Maddie with an impish grin giving her a final quick kiss before retreating back into the warmth of the house.
Maddie rolled her eyes at that comment and pulled her phone out of the small purse she had taken to carrying around (to hold her cellphone, keys, wallet, lip balm, stuff like that) and began tapping at it, taking a seat in front of the house. As she waited for the phone to connect, she glanced back at the front door, just shaking her head. All she wanted to do was take a hot shower and take advantage of the awesome tv set up and watch a movie. There was no way Sue was going to let her freeze, she had already promised to make popcorn.
The click in her ear dragged her out of her thoughts. "Hey mom."
Sue glanced out of the window smiling at the sight of Maddie on the phone before quietly winding down the blinds to stop her girlfriend from seeing into the house. Sue didn't think that Maddie would be inside for at least half an hour or so which gave her plenty of time to get settled in before her girlfriend came in. The blonde kicked her shoes off before heading towards the kitchen, she had a little setting up to do before Maddie finished her phonecall.
The call didn't last an hour; Maddie got cold quicker than she anticipated. And the house was nice and warm. After a hot shower she'd be all set to watch whatever Sue had picked for them. She'd just pop her head in and let Sue know she'd be down in a few minutes.
But the den was dark. And the only lights were those needed to prevent someone from tripping over everything.
Okay. So maybe Sue had gone to bed after all. Oh well. Not like they wouldn't have more time to watch movies, but she was looking forward to being alone together before everyone else came out. Still. Not like she could blame Sue for being so tired. Ah well. All Maddie could do now was make her way upstairs, turning off all the lights, and slowly tip-toe (so as not to wake her girlfriend) across the master bedroom and into the bathroom.
Except Maddie kinda ended up stopping as soon as she opened the bedroom door.
Sue looked up guiltily, a lit match still in her hand from lighting the last of the candles she had placed around the bedroom. The blonde had been so caught up in getting the room ready that she had missed the sound of Maddie coming back into the beach house. The teenager cast a quick eye over the room before turning to Maddie with a weak smile, "Hey, you're back," Sue pushed herself to her feet and blew out the match before it could burn down to her fingers. "I thought you'd be outside for at least another 10 or 15 minutes," Sue admitted, her eyes darted all over the room avoiding her girlfriend's eyes she started walking over to Maddie.
So obviously Sue wasn't asleep. That was unexpected. But what was more surprising was the state of the room itself. Candles. What looked like millions of candles (but were probably no more than two dozen in reality) were placed throughout the room, their flames flickering with a soft, warm glow. Very romantic to be certain.
"What's going on?" Her words were drawn out, the confusion evident on her face. "I mean the candles are a nice touch, beautiful really, but I thought you would be in bed?"
"It's not that late yet," the blonde objected, "how old exactly do you think I am?" Sue teased with a smile as she let her eyes finally meet Maddie's, "I just thought that maybe the candles would make for good mood lighting. You know set the tone for the night," she confessed. "Unless you're feeling tired?" she asked hurriedly, realizing she was babbling but unable to stop herself.
"I'm not tired." The redhead began to slowly move farther into the room, eyes wide as she took in the scene before her. "I thought we were watching a movie?"
"We've got the entire spring break to watch movies," Sue pointed out as she watched Maddie's expression change as a smile slowly blossomed on her face, "Although, if you really wanted to watch a movie then I guess we can." she asked with a twinkle in her eyes.
"Are those rose petals on the bed?"
"Ummm, yes," Sue admitted as she stared down at the floor, suddenly realizing how interesting the grains in the wood were.
Candles all over the room, rose petals on the bed... the only thing missing was some light jazz music and it'd be a super romantic scene right out of a movie or a romance novel. You know, before the lovers spent an intimate night entwined in each other's embrace. Maybe not shown explicitly, depending on the film's rating, but it was pretty obvious where the whole thing was headed.
Wait.
"Sue?" Maddie reached out to take the blonde's hands in hers. "There are rose petals on the bed."
Sue looked up at Maddie and entwined her fingers through the redhead's, "Yeah," she agreed, "They catch the candlelight pretty well don't they, and they smell really good." she noted with an impish smile as she ignored Maddie's surprise.
"And all the candles." Her heart was beating so loudly and so quickly that she was sure that it was going to burst out of her chest and launch into space. Her eyes darted around the room. Candles. Rose petals. Sue. There was a question Maddie wanted to ask, had to ask, but she was having trouble forming coherent thoughts. But she was finally able to meet her girlfriend's gaze. "You set this up."
Sue nodded her head, her mouth suddenly dry, "Yeah," she replied quietly. The blonde's eye's swept over Maddie's face searching for a sign of her girlfriend's reaction, "I wasn't sure how I was going to set everything up before you said you wanted to call your parents and it was the perfect opportunity to set up while you were outside, but you came in early and I didn't have enough time to clean everything up and making it perfect and..." Sue's voice trailed off as she realized she was babbling again. The blonde swallowed nervously, "Maddie?"
Giving the room another once over gained Maddie enough time to allow the implications of the scene to fully sink in. Sue had planned all this. For them. She had wanted to surprise Maddie. And in that she had succeeded. But she always thought she would be the one to light all the candles and scatter rose petals on the bed and everything else Sue had said she wanted; Sue was always a hopeless romantic. And although Maddie thought it sounded cheesy and more of some sort of trope used in movies and books, she had to admit that it at least made her feel weak in the knees. Which was really the whole point, she realized.
"Sue." Maddie smiled broadly and pushed a few blonde curls behind her girlfriend's ear. "It's beautiful."
Sue's answering grin was so wide it almost split her face in two, the teenager took a deep steadying breath, not even trying to hide the relief she was feeling. She and Maddie had talked around the subject before, but she hadn't been sure how Maddie would take the set-up although it wasn't until she had seen her girlfriend standing in the door that she had realized just how nervous she was. Now it felt like a weight she hadn't even realized she had been carrying had been lifted from her shoulder Sue realized as she brought Maddie's hand, still entangled with her own fingers, up and kissed it, "Not nearly as beautiful as you," she told her girlfriend sincerely.
