Rogue and Topaz || Wednesday Afternoon
Aug. 27th, 2014 03:02 pmThe two of odd names meet in the gym and hit off with talk of powers and the origin of their monikers.
Eighteen...nineteen...twenty.
Topaz finished her stretches and straightened up. The gym was empty - exactly as she had expecting, everyone was outside enjoying the last days of summer. She walked along the edge of the mat for a moment before bending over and propelling herself up onto her hands, her ponytail falling down in front of her face.
Rogue had been lazy. Besides the occasional jog, she hadn't really done anything in terms of physical fitness. Because of her powers, she didn't really need to exercise, but at the same time, she no longer had the acute knowledge of her body like before.
If she wanted to get back on the team, she would definitely need to step up her game.
Walking into the gym, she was surprised to only see one person. If Logan was here, she thought to herself, this place would be packed.
Not wanting to disturb the girl on the mats, Rogue stood in the middle of the gym and looked around. Treadmill seemed like a good place to start, but when she headed over, it looked different than one's she'd seen before. "Where's the on button," she muttered to herself, pushing random buttons. When nothing had the desired effect, she sighed heavily. Trying once more, she set it in motion only this time it moved quickly, throwing her off. If it wasn't for her flight, she would've been thrown on her butt.
"Um, sorry to bother y'all, but do you know how yo make this gosh darn appliance work?". The Southern always came out more when she was frustrated.
The unfamiliar face threw Topaz a bit - never mind that she hadn't been expecting anyone down here, she certainly hadn't been expecting anyone she didn't know. But the woman wasn't bothering her, so she returned her attention to what she was doing, coming down and bending backwards into a kickover.
The southern drawl drew her attention right as she was kicking off into the air, and she came back down quickly, the follow through a little less than graceful. "Uh, yeah. Sure." Uncertainty made her own accent a bit thicker. She made her way over to the treadmill, finding the button to turn the speed down. "Are you new?" She asked after a minute.
Of course it had to be the big giant button that obviously said 'touch me'. Why wouldn't it be that button? She groaned to herself, and shook her head, paying attention now to the British girl. "As new as a 10 year old child, sugar," she stated. "I just don't understand these gimmicks and I never will. If it weren't for all them kids outside, running around, I'd be out there myself, going through the trees. Logan would be just dying inside, watching me run on this here machine."
"I'm Rogue," she offered by way of introduction. "And thanks for showing me how to work this thing. Honestly, why do they have to make this stuff so difficult?"
Sugar. Well that was certainly a new one. Topaz tilted her head, examining the woman for a minute as she finally said, "Topaz. Nice to meet you. And no problem. So...not new then."
Rogue cocked her head, put her hands on her hips, and raised an eyebrow. "Well, didn't we already establish that, hon? I'm sure as heck not new here, but at same time, it's been a long time since I was last here, hence the utter confusion," she explained, raising her hand towards the machine. She stepped away from it and crossed her arms.
"Topaz. Now that's one pretty name. Did you pick it yourself?"
Had they established it? "Ah...not really. Sorta fell into it and it stuck." No one had ever really asked about her name before - in a school full of a mutants it was just one more oddity, she supposed. "What about you?" She asked after a moment. "Guessin' your parents didn't actually name you Rogue."
"Nah, I'm not lucky enough for that," Rogue responded cheerfully. "Guess I kinda fell into it too. That's a good way of looking at it. I heard it one time, always liked the word and when I wanted to be something else, why, it almost seemed natural to become Rogue.". She shrugged. "C'est la vie....I hope I'm not being a real pain or nothing. Once I start taking, I don't really stop."
"Oh no, it's fine." Topaz pressed her lips thin, still examining the woman. It was almost like with Matt. She was there, but Topaz couldn't feel her. It was unnerving. "Not like I was really doin' anythin' anyways."
There was something happening, but Rogue had no idea what. "Okay....are you okay? because honestly, you won't hurt my feelings. I can go."
"Oh. No," Topaz said quickly, realizing what she was doing. "No, you're just...you're like a friend of mine. I'm an empath, but his mutation makes it so I can't feel him. Don't meet people like that too often."
"Aha. Well, that makes sense." I think. "If it makes you feel any better, I've been told that I wear my heart on my sleeve, so you'll know what I'm feeling all the time." A pause. "Doesn't that get tiring? I find people exhausting."
Topaz pressed her lips thin to keep from laughing at that. "Sometimes. I'm usually pretty good about shieldin' though." Sometimes she just got curious and let them drop. "What do you do, anyways? If you don't mind askin'." She was always curious about mutations that blocked her own powers out.
Rogue stretched out her arm, covered by the light hoodie she was wearing. "Toxic skin. If I touched you, I'd have your powers and you'd be knocked right out. Then," she continued, "I'd have a mini Topaz running 'round my psyche. It's just as lovely as it sounds."
The young girl made a small, almost amused noise at that. "Well I wouldn't wish a mini Topaz on anyone's psyche so let's try to avoid that one."
"Well, it does have it's positives. If you lost your keys, I could probably tell you where they are." Rogue's lips lifted in a smirk. "Course, would probably be better to get Jeannie to do that anyways, but just sayin'." She flicked a glance towards the waiting mat. "Are you sure I'm not bothering you? I mean, you were working out, and now we're just jawing away. Maybe I should come join you on the mat? You seem to know what you're doing, and I'm gonna be honest here," she said, leaning in close as if she was sharing a secret. "I hate exercising. Hate it. But I know I gotta do it... I eat too damn much to get away without it."
"Oh, yeah, it's fine," Topaz said quickly, eyes flicking back towards the mat as well. "I was just messin' around a bit. Usually Kurt or Matt are down here to help but they've actually got lives so I'm on my own today. You can join if you want, though."
"Sounds good to me! Boss away, i'm a surprisingly good listener."
The truth of the matter was that Rogue just didn't want to be alone. Funny thing, being lonely in a house full of people, but that's how it goes sometime.
"Besides," she added. "You want to get to know me. I got dish on everyone here."
Topaz tilted her head for a moment, thinking this over. A small smirk pulled at her lips. "You wouldn't happen to know Amanda Sefton, would you?"
