x tarot *very quietly* "Doctor Essex, yes?"
X_Essex "Correct. I'm afraid you missed my lecture by a day or two." Essex motioned with his coffee cup. "My work has kept me from formally meeting the newest arrivals."
x tarot "It is good to meet you." Marie-Ange nods briefly. "Kitty has mentioned you, but I did not want to interuppt your work by barging into your lab. It would be very rude.."
X_Essex "Try knocking first. That automatically negates the barging aspect." Essex said, smiling thinly. "How are you finding the school?"
x tarot "I ... think I did not use the right word. My English is only so-so. I just mean that I would not want to interuppt your work." She blushes a bit, and ducks her head. "The school is .. very different from what I am used to. It is so informal, and not anything like my former school."
X_Essex "I can imagine. You were in a private instuition in France, were you not?"
x tarot "Yes, run by the Sisters of Notre Dame. It was very.. rigid." She pauses briefly, and then smiles. "And no boys."
X_Essex "Do you miss it?"
x tarot "No. And yes. I miss my parents, but I do not miss the sisters. Or the ugly skirts."
X_Essex "May I ask you why you decided to come to Xaviers?"
x tarot "I was.. " she pauses briefly. "outed.. when everyone got the headaches. My parents were worried that I would get hurt, I think, when people found out I was a mutant."
X_Essex "Do you feel this is where you should be?" Essex said, cocking his head to one side.
x tarot Marie-Ange looks confused for a moment. "I.. do not know where else I would be, other than home. But I think that if I can get used to the way things work here, that I should be okay. If not, I do not know where I would go though."
X_Essex "There are other schools for mutants and training. Closer to home. Did they not mention the Muir Island centre in Scotland?"
x tarot "No. I .. do not think my parents thought to ask. Or.. maybe they did, and chose here. It was.. not a decision that I had a lot of say in."
X_Essex "Curious. So, I'm told you do some sort of psychic projection?"
x tarot "It is something like that. I think that what I was told was that it was an astral projection. It is like making a movie in three-d, but not on the screen."
X_Essex "Have you been working with the psions here since you arrived?"
x tarot "I spoke to Miss Frost after the.. " she blushes and gestures in the direction of the student rooms. "..after the placement tests... I had a problem with my powers getting away from me. We have not worked on it though."
X_Essex "Have they developed a program for you yet?"
x tarot She shakes her head. "No. I do not really fit into the two that are setup, and I do not know who to ask.."
X_Essex "Has anyone asked you?"
x tarot "No. I think the teachers are so busy with Jono and Sarah... I did not want to bother them."
X_Essex "They haven't been terribly busy with either of them." Essex shook his head. "In the future, if you need something, or feel you are not receiving the instruction you need, come to me immediately."
x tarot "If it would not be too much trouble, that would be helpful. I .. do not understand how I do what I .. do. . and I do not know all the words to explain it, sometimes. "
X_Essex "Ms Colbert, I'm not sure I'd know the words either. But I'm willing to try and learn if you are."
x tarot "Merci.. I mean, thank you. Very much."
X_Essex "D'honour, c'est moi." Essex sat down on the booth and leaned against the counter. "Please, sit."
x tarot "Thank you, again." Marie-Ange sat, crossing her legs underneath her.
X_Essex "So, Ms Colbert. Young people often have dreams of the future. What do you dream of?"
x tarot "I am not sure, all the time. It is hard to tell if I am just dreaming, or if what I want to do could happen." She shook her head. "I read all the journals from before, and I heard what happened here when everyone got the headaches, but... I am still confused a little. I am not sure what I dream about."
X_Essex "You should dream, Ms Colbert. Those are the very things that bring us to more than we are. It's a personal religion, to hold to whatever beliefs we have."
x tarot "I just do not know if my dreams are right or not. I have to learn a lot before I can figure it out."
X_Essex "From personal experience, I find they're rarely wrong." Essex said, sipping from his cup. "In simple dreams are valid. Have you given thoughts to after your time here? Career, study?"
x tarot "Only a very little. I do not really know what I want to do, but .. I think that someone should work on.. " She shook her head again. "How mutants .. are seen in the media. It is just an idea though. And a lot of people here do not think that it would work."
X_Essex "Why wouldn't it?"
x tarot "Because people threw things at Ali when she was a public mutant.. and.. because everyone says mutants are monsters. And I do not think that some of the students here want to be not monsters. .. I don't know, I guess."
X_Essex "Have you told any of the teachers?"
x tarot She shook her head. "Not really. I think that they know, because I talked in my journal about it, but they did not respond much."
X_Essex "You know, the civil rights movements didn't get real support until the media got involved."
x tarot "I know. I have spent a lot of time looking it up. Too much time in the library, I think, lately; and about Ghandi, and some other things."
X_Essex "Ms Colbert, there are other ways to learn and to help mutants than a paramilitary strike force. I think it's an inspired idea."
x tarot "I .. think that fighting is not going to help us any. But it is not like I can tell that to Mister Logan when I have to take his self-defense class."
X_Essex "Don't take his class then. There are more important things than hand to hand combat."
x tarot "I have to. It is required."
X_Essex "By who's word?"
x tarot "Mister Summers, and Ms.Munroe. And I think Professor Xaiver, but I have not talked to him at all."
X_Essex "Ms Colbert, this is a school, not a jail. Do you plan to join the X-Men in a few years?"
x tarot "No! I .. do not want to fight. It is.. .. I want to go to university, I think. I .. I do not understand this X-men thing."
X_Essex "My dear, this is not something you ever have to do. If you do not wish to fight, do not take the class. Remember Ghandi, my dear? He simply made himself unbidden to any command he did not feel was right."
x tarot "I.. will think on that. I am not sure that I will not get in trouble, but I will think about it. Ghandi was not fifteen when he was an activist."
X_Essex "We all have to start sometime. If they make an issue, tell them I have a class that takes precidence." Essex nodded. "I'd like you to commit time on your idea about mutants in the media."
x tarot "A media class? Like Kitty's science class? I.. would like that very much. "
X_Essex "Be warned though. I am an unforgiving taskmaster. You will work heavily under my tutoledge."
x tarot She smiled openly for the first time in the conversation. "If you can be more unforgiving than one of the sisters, I will be impressed. And scared."
X_Essex "I thought I'd never have a chance to wear the habit again."
x tarot Marie-Ange stared openly for a moment, and then burst out giggling.
X_Essex "And now, I do have some work to do. If you'd like to drop by the lab tomorrow, we can work out a program."
x tarot "I would like that. Is there a time I should not disturb you?"
X_Essex "No, I am available most of the day. Please, just knock." Essex teased gently.
