Sarah asks Kane for help with handling firearms, and he shows her a few things.

Sarah looked down at the gun in her hand, hefting it up and down slightly, adjusting to its weight in her palm. The safety was on, of course, but she was extra careful not to move too quickly or to point it at anything just in case. She'd asked Kane to give her some pointers with firearms, feeling that her focus on hand-to-hand combat and fencing might need some more variety, but now she was having second thoughts.

"So, ok. You're sure I won't, like, accidentally blow my hand off or anything when I shoot this? If I shoot it." she corrected.

"First of all, it's a 22 caliber pistol. It doesn't have a kick like most handguns." Kane plucked her ear protection off for a moment so she could hear him. It had been a little surprised when she'd approached him about some firearms training. He'd spoken with the Professor first, and they'd agreed that the existing range was a safe environment to learn the basics. Sarah was standing between the short walls of one of the three shooting stations, staring down at the target wall. It was brick and backed with hay bales behind it on the off chance that a slug might penetrate. He'd also switched on the red lights of the short perimeter gate, which indicated that the range was in use.

"Second, if you do what I tell you, you'll be perfectly safe."

"Ok," Sarah nodded along in response while exhaling a deep breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. "if you say so." Kane had already given her a few pointers, and she leveled the pistol as he'd shown her how, or at least she tried to do it that way. She closed one of her eyes and bit her lip ever so slightly as she lined up her shot. The safety was still on and she wasn't going to squeeze the trigger until he said so anyway, but she was trying to line up her shot.

"Man, it always looks so much easier on the movies and tv, you know?"

"In the movies, a 9mm bullet can make a guy fly back twenty feet in the air." He said. "There's a difference between special effects and the real thing. Now, we're just going to concentrate on getting it inside the lines on the target. Don't worry about hitting a bullseye. When you're ready, click the safety off and line up your shot. Ease the trigger back to test the resistance; you want to squeeze the trigger from the firing point, not jerk it back. Exhale and take your shot."

"Ok." She flicked the safety off and did as Kane asked, exhaling as she peered down the barrel once more to ensure everything was as lined up as she could make it. Sarah's finger gently pulled back on the trigger until she met its resistance, then she took one more look before squeezing the trigger. Even though it was anticipated the bang made her twitch a little, and she closed her eyes, not looking at the target. "Did... did I hit it?"

"No, but you're not far outside." Kane said, peering down at the target. "You jerked the gun to the right at the sound, just enough to throw it off. Remember, the barrel is straight. Any change you make with your hands throws it off."

He tapped her left hand off the handgrip of the gun, repositioning it to hold the bottom of the grip and her hand. "This is called the Weaver Stance. Use your bottom hand to absorb the recoil and help steady your aim."

"Weaver stance, ok. I can do that." She flexed her hands, squeezing the handle in the position Kane had her holding onto the weapon. Sarah lined up her shot again, all while being extra careful not to let her grip slip or change from what she'd just learned. "Ok, gonna try again." she warned, unsure why she felt the need to do so but, well, too late now.

Squeezing the trigger until she met resistance, Sarah fired off another round, not flinching as much this time after the loud report of the firearm. She looked to see where her shot landed, squinting as she did so. "I think that was better, yeah?"

"Let's look." He pulled out his binoculars for an accurate look. The small rounds didn't leave particularly big holes in the target. "Looks like inside the two ring; a nice shot near the centre."

Kane nodded. "Now let's see you do it again."

Squinting at the target to see for herself didn't work, so Sarah blinked when she heard Kane's words. "I actually hit it? Twice? Huh, what do you know?" She smiled and hefted the weapon again, trying to remember what he'd told her last time before taking another few shots. Maybe she could get the hang of this after all.
