Jubilee takes Kurt to a yarn shop to get his mind off the previous day's shootings. Violence follows.
"Think of it as a bold adventure into a world completely unseen before this very moment." Jubilee and Kurt stood outside the entrance to 'Books and Yarn,' a multipurpose bookstore and knitting supply emporium she'd found in District-X on her way through a few months back. She'd been dying for an excuse to spend money in there ever since. Not that she technically needed an excuse, given that it was her money to do with what she wished, but she'd also been on a responsible kick of late and things like rent, her ever weighty food bill, and clothing came before knitting supplies.
"The knitting half, certainly", Kurt said with amused affection. "And I will gladly have you introduce me to this world."
"Just don't make any eye contact with the Grannies, they like to pinch." Jubilee pushed the door open and headed inside, mind already cataloging the variety of stock on display.
"Oh, I have long experience with grandmothers", Kurt said, smiling as he followed her in. "Are you looking for anything in particular, or just seeing what they have?"
"Looking mostly, I can't buy till I work out my budget for the month but like, if I see something really pop at me, I've got some savings I can use," Jubilee murmured, instincts honed over many years now taking in the exits, people and things in a snapshot vision she'd be able to recall perfectly later on if called upon. "Did you want to look at the books, or just hang out with me while I look through the yarn? They've got a little coffee shop up the back too, we could check out the food."
"I am always happy to just hang out with you, mein herz", he told her, dropping a kiss on her temple. "Yarn first, then books and/or food. And if there is anything you really want, I will make a gift of it for you."
"You spoil me, you know." Jubilee replied, heading directly for the yarn and a few colors she had already spotted as they walked in. It was like a knitters paradise in here, and she was already glad she'd decided to stop by. "Next thing you know, I'll want you to buy me a small country."
Kurt laughed. "A small country may be outside of my budget. But I do enjoy spoiling you within my means, you know that."
"Considering I enjoy being spoiled, I figure that ours is a match made in Heaven, fuzzy." Jubilee replied, standing on tip-toe to brush his lips with hers.
It happened in an instant, a sharp stabbing pain in her shoulder and then a flower of blood spreading outwards against her shirt. She didn't speak, just pushed Kurt away with her uninjured arm and turned toward the sound of glass tinkling down, launching herself toward the entrance of the shop. Someone had come after either herself or Kurt in broad daylight, that someone was either very good or very stupid and frankly, about to be very, very sorry.
Kurt stood in shock for a moment, staring at the blood on her shirt, then turned to hustle all the bystanders towards the back of the shop, as far away from the shooter as possible.
Jubilee had made it outside on instinct alone, not allowing herself time to register anything beyond the situation at hand, shock setting in fast as she scanned the buildings and the street for the assailant. Her training had kicked in the moment she'd felt the impact and it was the only thing keeping her on her feet now, and the only thing that saved her life as she ducked to the side, moving so as to avoid making herself an easy target.
The shot that would have hit her square in the forehead sliced across it instead, millimeters away from hitting anything vital but leaving a bloody wound that burned as the bullet passed across her scalp.
When he was sure all the customers and staff were as safe as they could be, Kurt didn't waste time with running - he teleported straight onto the street outside, just in time to catch Jubilee as she staggered from the impact... and to catch a third bullet in his gut.
Jubilee's head swam from the slice of the bullet across her scalp, and she knew as soon as she felt the blood sliding down the side of her face that it had caused some damage. It was Kurt she was worried about however as she caught him, wrapping arms around his shoulders as she shouted for him to get them out of there.
He was in shock and pain, losing blood fast - but Kurt managed to pull himself together long enough to fix an image in his head, of the clinic he'd been to before as a visitor. And then they were gone.
