The X-Men get intel about a breakout at Ryker's Island.
"I'm guessing everyone has seen the news about the riot right now at Ryker's Island?" Kane said to a table that nodded. They were in the war room of the Mansion, back at the familiar briefing table with the built in liquid metal display. He tapped a few buttons and it reformed into a map of the large off-shore prison complex off of Manhattan.
"Well, we just got an interesting tip off from one of the mansion's old friends in what's left of District X. According to them, they overheard a conversation between Johnny Horton and an unknown man talking about the riot as a cover for a job. I just spent an interesting twenty minutes on the phone with Horton. Seems that a man calling himself 'the Hood' was trying to recruit him for a job. Horton just got out of Ryker's a few months ago, but while inside, he was kept in their Xmax facility for mutant and superpowered criminals. This Hood wanted him to help navigate to freeing prisoners from that area while a distraction was staged in another part of the prison."
"Do we know anything else about this Hood?" Scott asked from his position at the table, "A breakout at Rykers isn't just something that you just decide to do, someone else must know something about him."
"Who's locked up in there, too?" Clarice asked, thinking about the jailbreak Magnetic North pulled years earlier with Masque. That mission was particularly fresh in her mind after what had just happened because at the time, it had been plenty traumatic, "What are the powers?"
"Ah think we need more information before we can come up with a plan," Rogue said cautiously. How she ended up on the team, even with limited memories, was beyond her. She'd only slowly gotten a handle on her flight. Trial by fire?
"Are we helpin' with the riot fallout,or we helpin' wit' that distraction thing?" it might have been a stupid question, but she was already starting to feel overwhelmed.
"We've got nothing about Rykers. Prisoner information runs through NY Corrections and the Marshal's office. I'd need a good reason for the FBI to ask and I don't have one. They might be targeting a specific inmate or just trying to break out as many as possible." Garrison tapped out a sequence and a view of an arrest record appeared. "The Hood is a former Maggia enforcer who has dreams of criminal greatness. He split from the Maggia a couple of years ago and the word is that he's been recruiting for his own gang. There isn't much past that."
Kane shrugged. "This could be a minor threat or it could be a huge, well orchestrated break-out. Either way, unless we get in the way, it's going to be bloody and we'll have a group of people on the streets that really shouldn't be."
"How should we go in?" Jennie asked, leaning back in her chair. "Quiet or big? Do we want to get in and get out, or should we let them know we're back in business?"
Jean remained quiet, listening to the team of people that had been assembled. This sort of thing was not something she normally did. It was entirely new territory. Stopping a threat was different than getting someone away from a threat. But it was experience, and she was always one for gaining that. It was another way to make a difference. Still, it didn't stop her stomach from fluttering.
"I'm partial to the quiet approach. Painting a giant target on our backs while we have limited information doesn't seem like the wisest action. Especially when we're trying to find our footing. But...I'll defer to everyone else's expertise."
"Quiet works for me," Angel agreed, rolling her shoulders. "Though to be fair quiet hardly ever stays quiet."
"Quiet is not always my strong suit, but it seems the best plan." Jean-Phillipe wasn't exactly stealthy, and his powers tended toward splashy, but he would manage well enough. And when things inevitably went sour, then he would be ready.
Scott nodded, "Quiet it is, though if it does get complicated remember watch out for one another and stay away from the authorities. We don't want to kick up any more drama than we have to." He nodded in Jean's direction, "At least not until we have a grasp on the entire situation."
"Assuming the intel is correct, I can't imagine it will be a large team. If we can take them out of commission before they can free anyone, it should be relatively simple. But if they can crack the prison and start freeing people, it's going to all kinds of ugly." Kane said. "I know this isn't optimal, but if we're going to stop this, I don't see another choice."
Rogue had been trying to follow the conversation, but it was hard trying to debate what she should say and what her adult self would say.
Although she was fairly certain both sides would agree. "Well, enough yappin' then. Let's pair off, an' get in there 'afore people get hurt. Quiet is great an' all, but that might be jus' be a luxury.". She raised an eyebrow. "So let's get this show on the road. Clock is tickin'."
"Like the lady says, let's get moving."
