Xavin and Roxy hang out after class and talk about summer cheerleading camp and the mutant battle league.
The last class of the day was chemistry. Roxy, who had never been particularly studious in general, had a particularly difficult time paying attention in chemistry, and had spent most of the class watching the clock. When the bell finally rang she gave a start, surprised out of a daydream.
Still feeling a little drowsy as she slid off her stool and not paying close attention to her surroundings, she nearly collided with Xavin. "Ooo! Sorry!" she said quickly, sounding sheepish. She knew Xavin from classes and had seen- him... her? Roxy wasn't too sure which pronoun to use- around the mansion but the two hadn't really spoken yet. All she knew was that Xavin was a shapeshifter, which was super awesome, because she... or he?- didn't need an image inducer. Roxy was pretty jealous. "I was totally zoned out there. Chem always does that to me."
Xavin caught her under the elbow, steadying her before stepping away. "Ick. We had math and we were going over the results of a quiz last week. Like every. Single. Question. I'm so glad it's over."
"Ugh, math is the worst thing ever.," Roxy agreed with typical teenage melodrama. "I'm glad I have the early math class. At least then I'm not spending the whole time thinking about cheerleading, like I am through chem." Not that she was on the squad here, having transferred halfway through the year. But she'd been thinking about next year.
"You got the early one? No way. Aww, man." Xavin settled a backpack more firmly on one shoulder and asked "Did you know that they have tryouts for the summer boot camp coming up? It's here and a couple of the other schools. You're allowed to go even if you're not on the squad, and it's like two weeks of cheer leading training, right at the start of summer."
"What?! Really?!" Roxy had to work really hard to keep from jumping up and down. "No I didn't hear that! That's awesome! And I didn't know you cheered!" She liked Xavin immediately. "Have we ever competed against each other? Where are you from originally?"
Xavin nodded. "Yeah - kind of. I was on the squad when I was a freshman and the start of my sophomore year but ... anyway, mostly only the juniors and seniors ever got rostered to the team, so I never got to compete. I'm from LA."
Roxy's eyes widened. "Really?!" she repeated. "Where? I'm from LA too! But I've been living in Manhattan for the past couple years, so I could go to the high school program at Julliard on weekends."
"Bel Air. But you were at Julliard? No way!"
"Way," Roxy responded in her best California girl voice, grinning. "I took classes in dance and in piano there. I couldn't decide which to focus on if I got in as a proper college student in fall 2016. But none of that matters anymore, thanks to being... y'know," she added, shrugging and plowing forward to show she wasn't going to dwell on what she couldn't control. "I can't believe you're from Bel Air! I'm from Pali. I won't subject you to any 'Fresh Prince' jokes if you don't subject me to any 'Saved By The Bell?'" she offered, holding out her hand to Xavin for a shake like this was an official pact.
Xavin nodded, shaking her hand. "Deal." The teen took a moment to stuff more books into a backpack and asked "So, we're going to cheer camp. Do you think any of the rest of the mansion wants to come?"
"We should probably ask, yeah," Roxy mused, leaning against a locker while Xavin filled the backpack. "I mean, I can't see Tabs wanting to be that cheerful, but Monet and Ali and Bobby and Miles might actually be interested." She giggled at the thought of Bobby and Miles joining the cheer squad to be so close to so many girls. "Unless they think that this Generation X stuff is enough of an imposition on their free time," she added, not wanting to get too far ahead of herself. There was also part of her that wouldn't mind cheerleading being something just she and Xavin did.
"Plus, there's also... this other thing I want to see if they'd be into," Roxy added. "If you'd be into, too." She leaned in close to Xavin so she could keep her voice down. "I've been working with someone at the mansion lately; her name's Tandy," she explained. "She can make daggers made out of light, kinda like how I can make diamond shards. So she's teaching me how she does it so I might be able to do it. But anyway, so she was telling me about this... thing that she goes to. Like a kind of a club or a sport or whatever. It's like a mutant... battle league thing."
"Miles will think it's a girl thing. And Monet won't be into it," Xavin said, nodding and learning forward a little too to whisper "mutant battle league? What the hell?"
"Yeah, maybe," Roxy agreed. She chuckled at herself. "I'm not good at guessing what people are gonna think about stuff," she admitted. "And yeah. That was kinda my reaction. Do you know Avatar? The cartoon, not the weird movie about the blue people being colonized."
Xavin's eyes widened. "Do you mean like... mutant probending? Wow..." The teen slammed the locker closed and gave the door a rattle to be sure that it was locked. "You want to get a coffee, head back to the mansion later? I want to hear more about this and this" - which was said with a glare at the back of a letter jacketed shoulder that had checked into Xavin's as a senior left "isn't the best place to chat."
"Yeah, let's do it," Roxy nodded with a smile. "There's a place called Coffee Quake that's just a couple blocks away. And yeah. I do mean mutant probending!"
"Just let me text the mansion to let them know we're not going to make the bus or Matt will probably strangle me," Xavin replied with a shy smile. "You have the right powers for something like that, too. Where did you even hear about it?"
"I heard about it from Sifu Tandy," Roxy grinned as Xavin texted, happy when they went out of the school and down the street away from possible eavesdroppers. "This awesome, hot blonde chick who used to live in Asgard, like the legit Asgard from Norse mythology or whatever. She makes light daggers so she's been helping me with my diamond shards, being my Zuko. But she said they have different categories of competition for different power types, so maybe there's, like, a shapeshifting competition?"
"So... she's related to that Molly girl? I heard she was there, too. It's insane. I mean, how are - how are Norse gods even real?" There was a pause. "I don't think I have the right kind of shapeshifting for that. I mean, I've only found one shape. Maybe two, depending on how you count it. This one and the - the girl one I always had when I was growing up."
"Maybe?" Roxy actually wasn't sure if they were related. "Hmm, well maybe two is enough?" she suggested hopefully, not wanting to discourage Xavin. "You should totally come with me to check it out and we can see for ourselves!"
"I will. It sounds interesting, even if I don't know what I can do there other than get my ass kicked."
"Well, even if we can't compete, we can always cheerlead there!" Roxy responded with a big grin.
