A random meal...
Apr. 9th, 2004 07:20 pmKitty was humming to herself as she moved about the kitchen. Lorna had been distracted by something, it seemed, or perhaps she'd already finished her cooking for the evening, for the older woman was no where to be found. That suited Kitty just fine, since it meant she had the kitchen to herself.
On the stove a pair of chicken breasts were cooking as she watched over them, in the stove her gnocchi were almost done, and on the table a box of cracker-like matzah was sitting by the setting she'd laid out as well as the book she was reading.
Angelo wandered into the kitchen in search of food, pausing in the doorway when he saw Kitty already there. "Hey, Kit."
Kitty glanced up and smiled. "Heya Angelo, how's things?"
Angelo smiled back. "Not too bad. You?"
Kitty nodded. "Much the same. Frightfully glad it's the weekend."
Angelo chuckled. "Yeah, an' Easter, too. Extra day off is always good."
Kitty shrugged. "Can't really complain about getting a holiday off, even if it's not my holiday."
Angelo nodded, remembering. "Thought you got a holiday round now anyway, though. Passover?"
Kitty laughed. "Yep, pesach. Started on Monday, and I get to go back to eating real things on Tuesday."
Angelo nodded. "What are the rules about that?" he asked curiously, honestly interested.
"Mainly, no eating leavened foods, and no grains. Plus all the cooking is done in seperate dishes, since normal dishes wouldn't be kosher."
Angelo nodded again, glancing over what she'd cooked. "Smells good", he said lightly, turning to one of the cupboards in search of food of his own, suddenly even hungrier.
Kitty couldn't help chuckling a little at that. "I'm going to have some extra, if you want. Although I doubt you'll like matzah."
Angelo glanced round with a bright smile. "Never tried it, but if there's really extra, I'm up for tryin' it now."
Turning off the burner, Kitty moved the chicken pan over, then switched off the oven. "Grab another plate then," she said. "Doesn't matter which one you use."
Angelo turned back to pull a plate out of the cupboard, setting it down on the table.
"Actually, grab some peanut butter too, or honey. I'm told it helps," she added as she pulled the gnotchi out of the oven and carried the pan over to the table and dishing them onto the plates.
Angelo nodded, moving to another cupboard to get the peanut butter while she served up, then sat down, putting it in the middle of the table.
The chicken placed on the two plates, Kitty set her pans back onto the stove so she could wash them when she finished then joined Angelo at the table. Pulling one of the thin squares from the box, she broke it in half and offered Angelo his choice - she'd normally give him the larger, but she knew most gentiles really didn't like it. At that, she wasn't all that fond of matzah, but it was better than nothing, which was her other option.
Angelo took one of the halves and, as she'd suggested, set about spreading peanut butter on it. "Thanks."
Setting her own piece down, Kitty nodded before setting into her dinner. "Hey, your communion thingies are flat crackers too, right?" she asked, seemingly out of no where.
Angelo took a bite of matzah before answering. "More like wafers. Similar, though."
"You know why?"
Angelo blinked. "Why they're made like this? Not sure. Never really thought about it."
"My rabbi told me a couple years ago, when I asked why your Easter was always during Passover, or right around. The bread he'd have broken at the table would have been matzah, cause it was a passover dinner."
Angelo nodded, smiling faintly. "Makes sense, now I think of it that way."
Kitty nodded in turn. "I'd never have thought of it myself, but you're right, it does. Wonder if your wafer things are actually still kosher for Passover."
Angelo gave that due consideration. "No idea, actually. You'd think so, maybe."
Kitty shrugged. "It's possible. Not that it really matters, and of course you'd have to get a rabbi to say it anyway."
Angelo grinned. "True." He paused, before deciding they'd reached the end of that particular topic and changing the subject. "How've you been doin' lately?"
"Pretty well. It's mostly just been work, work, work, as usual."
Angelo nodded. "You still plannin' that stock market experiment for Angie's precog?"
Kitty nodded. "Yeah, just waiting to see who all responds. I'll probably start it on Monday. You're helping then?"
Angelo smiled. "Yeah, I think so. Sounds interestin'."
"Oh, it ought to be. Don't have any idea what the outcome will be, but that's part of the fascination." Kitty grinned.
"Definitely", Angelo answered. "An' it might help Angie get a better idea of what her precog can an' can't do."
"Yeah, exactly. I mean, we're supposed to be learning, right? And Angie said she'd get one of the adults to 'supervise', so we're all good."
Angelo grinned. "Should be kinda fun", he answered, digging into his food again.
Kitty must have been pretty hungry, because she'd polished off most of her dinner. "Hey," she said. "Mind doing your dishes? I've got to do the pots and my plate, but it'd be a help..."
Angelo nodded agreeably. "Sure thing. Least I can do - you cooked, after all."
"Thanks." Finishing off her last gnotchi she stood up, going to dump her dishes in the sink and start the water.
