Topaz calls in Billy and Megan after getting Clea's text, and a plan is made.
"God damn it Clea, answer your phone!"
Topaz wasn't a person who was easily rattled. But getting a text from Clea telling her several students had disappeared and the rest were going through a suspicious portal to find them was certainly enough to set her on edge.
And now, of course, Clea's phone was going straight to voicemail. Probably because the idiots had already gone through the portal without waiting to hear all the reasons why that was a bad idea.
Topaz swore loudly in Hindi, ripping the phone away from her ear to text Amanda - and caught herself. That wouldn't do any good, Amanda wasn't even in the country. Lovely. She sighed, taking a deep breath to calm herself down. Hopefully Billy and Megan got her text and would be there soon.
She definitely needed help.
Megan's phone danced on the work table. She liked to think of the vibration as dancing, anyway, as the smooth surface made for rather an animated motion. She looked up from her fashion design project, which was carefully laid out before her in the boathouse art space. It was Topaz and she wanted Megan to come to the library. It seemed important, but then, Megan was ready to assign importance to just about anything right now.
Megan had taken her project to the boathouse so that she wouldn't clutter up the suite she shared with Jennie. Plus, it was easier to keep from being distracted here. Spring semester had barely started at her design school and she already had so much to do. So of course she wanted to be doing anything but work right now.
"OMW" she texted back, then slipped her phone into the pocket of her hoodie and headed out to the library.
Billy's pocket buzzed, and he juggled the large box in hand into a precarious balancing act as he fished out his phone and tucked it between his chin and shoulder. He squinted, catching Topaz's name, but trying to make out the words was impossible from that angle. The city sidewalk was bustling, and the bypassers jostling by certainly didn't help, but the word "help" caught his attention.
"Siri, text Topaz that..." he began, "Eh, screw it. I want to be right there" he formed an image of Topaz in his mind while finished the chant, slipping into an empty doorway and hopefully avoiding too much notice. The scene shimmered, and "there" turned out to be the school library. "Help me set this down?" he called over the cardboard toward the figure he assumed was Topaz.
Topaz jumped when Billy appeared in the library, and grabbed the box to help him get on the floor. "There might be a problem," she said without preamble as Megan walked in. "The kids are doin' somethin' stupid." She showed them the text she'd gotten from Clea.
"Stupid-stupid? Or unwise-stupid?" Megan asked as she fluttered over the remaining distance to view the phone that Topaz presented. Her all-black eyes fixed on the word "portal."
"Right... the second kind." The kids weren't lacking in brains, just the wisdom on what to do with them. The light anxiousness she'd felt on the way over now settled into a small ball of fear in her gut. This was not good.
"Wait, like a parallel universe dimension?" Relieved of his baggage, Billy settled into a nearby chair, as much from confusion as fatigue. "Just when you think this place couldn't get any weirder."
"It won't be half-cocked. We've all survived other dimensions before, 'ave n't we? What do we know?"
Megan looked to Billy, but her words were for Topaz. "Yes, who exactly? And where? Why? Ok, nevermind why for now. But what knowledge or tools do we have to help them in that dimension?"
Topaz pressed her lips thin, thinking for a minute. "I have no idea who might've gone with Clea, I'm guessin' it's whoever they could find at the high school. But we have more years of magical trainin', for one. And...we have help." Oh she did not like this part. At all. "Amanda and her mates aren't here, but we can ask the X-Men to go with us." The bitterness in her tone was obvious. "The more fire power the better."
"The X-Men *can* help us with a rescue effort," Megan agreed in a reassuring tone. "And we can can help them with anything magical. What are we waiting for?" She wasn't sure why Topaz seemed hesitant to contact the more seasoned team. Was she missing something? She glanced back to Billy for his advice on the matter.
Billy gave Megan a small shrug, also at a loss. "Yeah, we might be okay with just us three, but better safe than sorry." Although for all he knew, they could be calling the cavalry in for a trip to Butterfly Land. "Do we know who's around? Is there an alarm we pull or something?"
Topaz hesitated a bit. How did one who wasn't on one of the teams get a group together? "I'll talk to Kurt," she said finally. "He'll know what to do."
Megan nodded, nervously tucking a dark strand of hair behind her ear. Hopefully Mr. Sefton could help, or at least say if they were overreacting. But something in her gut told her that they weren't.
