Bobbi and Sue: Champagne and Burgers
Mar. 18th, 2016 10:50 pmSue and Bobbi run security at a Museum opening. Surprisingly nothing goes wrong.
The job might not have been the most exciting one, but monitoring the museum's security with Sue on a gala event night at least gave Bobbi a chance to dress up a little. It wasn't something she did often, but every now and then she liked to have the opportunity just the same.
She sat in front of the control panel of the museum's video camera array, in front of a dozen monitors showing various areas of the building. Bobbi reached down and slid off her heels - even if she wanted to dress up her feet still needed a break - and sighed.
"I suppose I should be happy nothing exciting is happening, huh?"
"Considering it's our job to have made sure that nothing exciting happens," Sue grinned at Bobbi as she put down her tablet, "Look at it like this, a museum gala trumps having to sit in a car all night on a stake out. We get to walk around, eat as much food as we want and the security system here pretty much will take care of itself. Or at least it should, I designed part of it so if something does go wrong that's a slap in the face."
"All very good points, yes." Bobbi smiled and picked up some of the appetizers she'd snatched off of a tray earlier in the evening and put into a napkin. "Is it sad that I kinda really want a burger or something instead though?" She wasn't all that refined, and her palate certainly wasn't either. That was something she could fix later on after they were done working, however.
"Everything looks great so far, so no slapping in the face for you thankfully. Which is a good thing, because if I haven't said so yet you look really nice this evening, and it'd be a shame to mess with that," Bobbi paused before adding, "not that any time would be good to get slapped, y'know, but still."
Sue put down her tablet and gestured a few of the circulating servers over, liberating two glasses of champagne, one of which she passed to Bobbi while nodding at the other, "It's not quite a burger, but the roast ham here should be pretty good, and the caterer's crab cakes are something else." She grinned at Bobbi, "Since we both look so stunning, no reason we can't enjoy ourselves too. besides," she nodded at the other woman's wrist, "with something like that, you should really show it off a little and get the guests here jealous."
"That's true, I'll have to go track some of those down then." Bobbi looked down at her bracelet and held it up a little. "Yeah, it was a pleasant surprise, I didn't expect anything at all so Warren picking up a little something was nice." She looked at Sue's jewelry to see what she was sporting. "Did he pick you up something as well?"
Sue grinned at the older woman, "That's the benefit of being a, well almost a guest, it's their job to bring it to you," Sue pointed out gesturing to a nearby waiter, twisting her wrist to let the light glint of her bracelet, "Luckily I had a necklace and earring to match it...you don't think Warren's been through my jewelry to pick out a color do you?"
"He probably just picked up on it from what you usually wear, maybe?" Bobbi offered, looking at her own bracelet. "So I don't know why he'd pick this one out for me, huh." She hardly wore jewelry to work, which made her wonder if she'd worn anything during their trip together recently. "He probably just asked the sales person at the mall where he bought it or something."
"That does sound a lot more like Warren," Sue admitted, "Although it's not the worst plan either, they're the experts. Sometimes, despite meaning the best people can pick out the one gift that you'll wear once and then never again. Like christmas jumpers, they only ever get worn once or twice a year."
"Yeah, exactly. Though I'll probably wear this more than that, he had to spend at least a few hundred on it or so I bet." She shook her wrist a little, angling it so the fluorescent lights made it sparkle just so. "It'd be a shame to just have it sitting around the house really." Bobbi didn't wear jewelry all that much but she figured she could find an extra occasion or two if she tried hard enough.
"More than a few hundred dollars," Sue pointed out as she rested her glass on a nearby table and tapped the bracelet on Bobbi's hand with a smile, "This is Warren Worthington we're talking about here, you think he's ever going to do anything that isn't more expensive than that? I'd agree it's a shame to just let it lie around, he managed to get the color down perfect for you."
"Yeah but... it can't have cost that much, could it?" Bobbi suddenly had the urge to Google it and see if she could find out, but did she really want to know? He'd paid for a trip for her, she knew, but he'd gone too and that was different, wasn't it? She shook her head and blinked, responding to the compliment instead of thinking too hard about how much the gift had cost. "Oh, thanks, you're right, it is pretty much perfect, huh?" Bobbi paused for a second before adding, "Yours is perfect too, Sue, it really does match the other pieces you have."
"I know, that's what scares me, someone out there has done an analysis of the jewelry I wear to figure out how to match the bracelet with my most worn selections. Well either that or Warren picked something and got lucky." Sue noted with a laugh, "But that seems so tame and pedestrian doesn't it. Some kinda conspiracy is always more fun don't you think?"
"It really is, yes," Bobbi agreed with a chuckle. "Conspiracy is always the way to go, and I wouldn't put it past him at all." Now she was also wondering how much research he had done on her gift. Yup, she was going to have to have a talk with him indeed. "Such is the life we lead, of danger and intrigue, yes?"
"Well you can't get the glamour and fashion without taking the darkside of danger and intrigue with it," Sue agreed, "Or is glamour and fashion the seedy underbelly of danger and intrigue, I've never quite been sure." she noted with a smile, "some of the society people I've met are way more cut throat than any gangster. I mean a gangster can only torture you and kill you right?"
"And loan you money too," Bobby said with a wink, "or so I hear anyway, of course." Which could lead to broken legs and cement shoes, things like that, all things much more direct than conspiratorial. As if on cue, her stomach growled a little. "Ugh, ok, I know waiters can bring it to us but eff it, I'm off to grab myself some appies. You want to come with?" Being served was nice but she was hungry now, darn it.
Sue glanced down mournfully at her empty glass, "You think it's ok for us to drink on the job? They've broken out the good Dom Perigon for the gala although," I guess we should be good," she said regretfully, "at least until the show is over and I convince that cute waiter over there to bring me home a couple of bottles and some of the good food they hide around the back. Till then the appies will have to do." she decided winking at Bobbi.
"I own't tell if you don't," she replied with a wink of her own. Not that they'd drink a whole lot or anything, but what's a glass of champagne between friends? "I'm totally down for that plan as well, by the way. Especially if it gets us more alcohol and food." And maybe her friend would get a phone number or more out of it as well. Everybody wins!
